Inside KELOLAND Special: Remarkable Women
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Remarkable Women is a nationwide initiative led by KELOLAND's parent company Nexstar Media Group.
This year, KELOLAND TV is proud to have two local winners. Since our viewing area covers both the Sioux Falls and Rapid City television markets, we selected a winner from east river and west river.
Jill Janecke and Abby Martinez were chosen as this year's Remarkable Women of KELOLAND. They were nominated by people who know them and see the incredible impact they are having on the world around them.
As part of the honor, Nexstar awarded a $1,000 donation to the non-profit of their choice.
Martinez and Janecke will also travel to Los Angeles later this month for Nexstar's national Remarkable Women conference, where they'll represent South Dakota.
The 2025 Remarkable Woman of the Year will be announced during a one-hour special airing on The CW Network. Watch Sunday, April 20th at 8:00 P.M. Central time.
This year's local winners were just two of dozens of women nominated across KELOLAND.
KELOLAND Media Group received a total of 89 nominations from across our viewing area. We met up with a few of those nominees to share their stories.

‘Duck Dynasty' star Miss Kay Robertson is ‘not in the best of health' after husband's death, son says
(NEXSTAR) – 'Duck Dynasty' star Miss Kay Robertson, the wife of the late Phil Robertson and the matriarch of the 'Duck Dynasty' family, is suffering from poor health in the wake of her husband's passing last month, her son has revealed. Willie Robertson broke the news in an interview with the USA Today Network earlier this week, saying his mother 'is not in the best of health.' 'We're trying to help her out as much as we can,' Willie Robertson said. Pop singer reveals breast cancer diagnosis: 'Sucks' As noted by USA Today, the Robertson family had discussed Kay Robertson's health issues in recent months, including during an April episode of the 'Unashamed' podcast. 'Tell you the truth, it hasn't been good,' Jase Robertson said at the time, discussing his parents' health issues. 'But for my mom, it's been a lot better in the past week, because she was really not doing good. She got an infection from a fall from a cut that had happened earlier. Jase Robertson added that his mother was hospitalized and undergoing rehab at the time, and struggling to eat on her own, which forced him to think that 'maybe this is it.' Speaking with TV Insider, Korie Robertson (Willie Robertson's wife) said her mother-in-law had been 'struggling with a lot of falls.' 'I think she forgets that she can't really walk, so she'll fall, and that's been hard to deal with,' she told the outlet. She's also suffering from what Willie Robertson called 'depression' after the loss of her husband in late May. 'She lost her partner of 60 years,' Willie Robertson told USA Today. Man in LA hospital remains unidentified after nearly 2 weeks The family is currently appearing in a revival of the 'Duck Dynasty' series on A&E, fittingly titled 'Duck Dynasty: The Revival,' which follows the younger Robertson generation and the family's Duck Commander recreation and hunting-gear company. Kay Robertson makes an appearance on the new series, Willie Robinson confirmed. Flashback Friday: Parading Pets around Phillips Avenue
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – We've been telling you about several different events over the month of June that'll get families out of the house and hitting the streets and parks all around Downtown Sioux Falls. Mitchell residents against Davison County prison site In this week's Flashback Friday, we're going all the way back to 1968 where Keloland's Bill Severtson shows us how a group of kids spent their summer Saturday morning parading their pets along Phillips Avenue. Some mighty unusual traffic moved the wrong way on a one way street in downtown Sioux falls this morning. The slow moving travelers included horses, dogs, cats, hamsters, a fox, and two geese, all in all about 75 assorted refugees from Noah's Ark. Accompanied by 100 young human type companions. It was the annual county pet parade sponsored by the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office and the Sioux Empire Kennel Club. Trophies were awarded Sammy Brett of Sioux Falls for the best decorated float and Richard Mathiesen of Renner for the child with a pet coming the longest distance. And Laurie Blount most unusual pet, a very friendly gray fox. Ribbons were given for just about every category imaginable and everybody went home convinced that their pet was the best in the whole wide world. Bill Severtson, KELOLAND News. Jessie J reveals ‘early' breast cancer diagnosis
(NEXSTAR/KTLA) – English pop singer Jessie J, known for songs including 'Price Tag' and 'Bang Bang,' has been diagnosed with breast cancer, she revealed in a video post to her 13.9 million Instagram followers on Tuesday night. The singer, 37, added that she's scheduled to undergo surgery after an appearance at a London music festival on June 15, at which time she plans to 'disappear for a bit.' (Alan Chapman/) The musician, whose real name is Jessica Ellen Cornish, told her followers on Tuesday that she had been diagnosed with 'early' breast cancer sometime before the release of her recent single 'No Secrets.' In another post to her Instagram Stories, she confirmed she's known about the diagnosis for about nine weeks. 'Before 'No Secrets' came out, I was diagnosed with early breast cancer,' she said. 'I'm highlighting the word 'early.' Cancer sucks in any form, but I'm holding onto the word 'early.' 'I have been in and out of tests throughout this whole period,' she added. Jessie J, who was diagnosed with Ménière's disease in 2020, said she 'selfishly' decided to share her diagnosis with fans in part because she needed 'their love and support.' 'It breaks my heart that other people are going through so much similar, and worse. That's the bit that kills me,' she said. The 'Domino' singer did not go into detail about treatment or therapies but confirmed she would undergo surgery sometime after her appearance at the Capital Summertime Ball at London's Wembley Stadium on June 15. She indicated that at least part of her breast may be removed, remarking that she would get to 'keep my nipples.' 'It's a very dramatic way to get a boob job,' she joked. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 270,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the U.S., making it the second most common form of cancer among women after skin cancer. Roughly 42,000 people die from it every year. Treatment can include radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, surgery, or a combination of several treatments. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the five-year survival rate for patients with early-stage breast cancer — like the one Jessie J describes — are 99%. The survival rate drops for patients with later-stage cancers. The pop star, in a text post to Instagram Stories, said the diagnosis has given her 'incredible perspective.' 'But honestly, I need to process it and talk about it, and I need a hug. You have loved me through all my good and hard times,' Jessie J wrote. 'And I don't want this to be any different.' Many of her fellow artists and friends offered words of support in the wake of her video, including Katy Perry, Chelsea Handler and Rita Ora, the latter of whom called Jessie J 'my favorite person.' 'You've got this. My mother had it, and I know the surgery and any treatment on this matter is mentally tough, so I'm here for you,' Ora wrote.
