ZR1 Backed To Beat Nürburgring Record
The Nürburgring's Nordschleife is still the golden standard by which performance cars are often judged. Setting a time below 7 minutes is a feat reserved only for the most focused of performance cars, and according to ex-Corvette engineer Jim Mero, the new ZR1 could blast well past that barrier. In fact, he believes the 1,064-horsepower C8 can beat the lap time set by the Mercedes-AMG One, a record for production cars that was reset on September 23, 2024, with the watch stopping at 6:29.09. According to Mero, using some very sketchy car enthusiast math, the ZR1 could probably do a 6:23 lap.
Not-Very-Scientific Sums, But The ZR1 Might Surprise
Speaking on the HorsePower Obsessed podcast, Mero suggested that, if the gaps between C8 Corvettes are roughly similar to the gaps between C7 Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR1 variants, which he helped develop, then that scale should mean that the C8 Z06's time of 7:10.52 (set by Auto Motor und Sport's Christian Gebhardt, it must be noted) would translate to a ZR1 lap time of 6:23. 'If I put the C8 Z06 at seven minutes and use a scale factor, I get a 6:23,' he said on the show. He added that he's probably going to 'get into a lot of trouble for that, but it's speculation with some background.'
Interestingly, he believes that the AWD, hybridized ZR1X might not set a faster time around the track, citing concerns over how long the electric motor's 186 horsepower would be available during the lap, as well as the question of how any extra weight may impact handling when the battery is depleted. Again, this is pure speculation from somebody who has no hands-on access to the car, and underestimating what the Corvette team has achieved there may be to one's chagrin.
We'll Know The ZR1's Nürburgring Time Soon Enough
According to CorvetteBlogger, the team behind the ZR1 is preparing to set a lap time very soon, but until it's close to achieving its goals, we doubt we'll hear anything about their own official estimates and expectations. The publication says that the Corvette team has booked a session at the track for some time this month, and if that's true, we can expect YouTubers and trackside photographers to have news for us before the official word is out, just as was the case with the Mustang GTD's sessions at the Nordschleife. Ford's 850-hp GTD set a time of 6:52.072, and you can be absolutely positive that the Corvette team will be aiming to smash that by a long distance with its 1,064 ponies and mid-engine layout, among other tricks. As Ford and Multimatic engineers can attest, the toughest foe to overcome at the Green Hell is typically the weather. Thus, any theoretical lap times may still be impossible to achieve without perfect timing, maximum commitment, and a dash of luck. Hopefully, we'll know the truth within a week, but if the ZR1 does beat (or even come close to) the time set by the $3 million AMG One, it won't matter when we find out – it'll still mean something epic for American performance.

Porsche Taycan to be blown away by new 1,341bhp monster Mercedes

Mercedes has revealed a brand-new concept car that it thinks will change the world of high-performance electric cars. The Mercedes-AMG GT XX is a four-door supercar that packs some pretty intimidating figures, but behind them is a range of new powertrain technologies that will proliferate into other Mercedes models, including one that'll take a similar form to this four-door concept from as early as next year. Advertisement - Article continues below The key development in the AMG GT XX is its new axial flux electric motors. Developed by British company YASA, the new motor is both considerably smaller and more power dense than existing technology, and its introduction represents a change that is as significant as when fuel injection replaced carburettors. An axial flux motor works in a completely different way to existing e-motor tech, fundamentally changing the internal structure and axis of rotation. This has many benefits, but the most important are that an axial motor is around one third of the size, and two thirds the weight, of an equivalent current e-motor, yet has three times the power density. The new tech's application in the GT XX is three-fold, because the concept mounts two motors on the rear axle and one on the front to create a tri-motor layout. The majority of the power is derived from the rear axle, with the front cutting in to help out with traction and helping produce that 1,341bhp peak power figure. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below No official torque figure has been shared yet, however Jӧrg Miska, the CEO of Yasa, assured us it would be 'thousands of newton metres'. The tri-motor set-up also allows for torque vectoring, which Yasa has experience with through the hybrid supercars – such as the Ferrari SF90 – that use its motors. However the GT XX takes things to 'a completely new level,' he told us. AMG is also working to give the upcoming production car a unique character among EVs, with the brand experimenting with computerised engine noises that have been teased on its social media channels. In the video, a prototype of the production car we'll see next year features a bassy, V8-like growl, and Mercedes' chief technology officer Markus Schäfer has hinted this will be paired with a Hyundai Ioniq 5 N-like virtual gearbox and engine mapping system to deliver 'everything that you expect in V8, V12 or race-oriented AMG'. Advertisement - Article continues below Speaking to Auto Express ahead of the GT XX's reveal, Schäfer acknowledged that 'bringing hardcore V8 fans to an electric vehicle is something that is definitely a challenge, and offering just a pure electric car doesn't do the job.' As a result, this concept, and the forthcoming production model, are supposed to tell a 'great story' through the technology onboard. As Schäfer put it, 'What is this axle flux motor that I have in there? How does the car feel in terms of noise, in terms of sound level, in terms of the vibration, in terms of the gear shift? Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below 'It has to touch the emotional side of you, and if it doesn't, it doesn't do the job,' he said. 'But this is what the Mercedes-AMG cars do, and that's exactly what we transferred piece by piece into this GT XX.' Yet high-performance electric motors are nothing without a battery pack capable of making the most of them, and in this case AMG has produced its own bespoke high-performance battery that can manage extreme and – crucially – repeatable power delivery. AMG has not released the specific capacity of the battery, or told us how much range the GT XX could offer – only that it would be 'significant'. But the creators have touted the benefits of its new tall and thin cylindrical cells, which sit within a temperature-controlled housing under the cabin floor. Advertisement - Article continues below Another innovation is that the car's electrical system runs at 'over' 800V, beating all contemporary competition, and allows it to achieve a colossal average charging speed of 850kW – a figure that's far beyond even the most advanced chargers in the UK, futureproofing itself for battery charging infrastructure that Mercedes has ambitions of installing across Europe. These speeds are enough to add around 250 miles of range in around five minutes. The design of the GT XX harks back to the experimental Mercedes C111, which was similarly used as a test bed for new technologies. The new car also represents the next evolution of the Vision AMG concept from 2022, and the Mercedes Vision One concept presented the year after that, with all three previewing AMG's new electric flagship that we'll finally see next year. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below The extremely low and sleek shape will be amended slightly for production, allowing for a little more cabin space than the very tight concept. Its overall design, however, will be largely carried across, including the low-mounted grille, sleek sides, huge wheels and cut-off rear end with its six circular tail-lights. The concept has a few flourishes – for example, the active vanes built within the wheel spokes, illuminated sills made from luminescent paint, and a dot-matrix panel between the rear lights – but AMG is adamant that all these elements are in direct development for future production models. The concept also does without any form of rear windscreen, which will change for the production model. Inside the cabin, the concept is pared back and minimal. While AMG didn't directly confirm it, the yoke-style steering wheel is in development in combination with fly-by-wire steering, and could potentially make its first appearance on the production model. The digital set-up also looks to be pretty production-ready, with a combination of an 11.25-inch screen ahead of the driver and a 14-inch display in the centre angled towards the driver. With its new car, Mercedes-AMG might appear to be hitting a slightly stagnant place in the market that's already occupied by cars such as the Porsche Taycan and Lotus Emeya, but the project is about much more than an expensive four-door EV. The GT XX Concept is a mission statement for the next generation of EV technology that will eventually trickle down to benefit EV development in every corner of the new-car market. Tyrone legend left baffled by Donegal's complaints over quick All-Ireland Quarter-Final turnaround

Jim McGuinness' men beat Louth last Sunday in the preliminary Quarter-Final and will have to play Monaghan this Saturday in Croke Park, despite the fact that they requested that they be given the full seven days to recover. The county released a statement highlighting their disappointment in the decision to deny this request, although it might seem unfair when you consider that the other three teams who played in preliminary Quarter-Finals will have gotten a full seven days. However, when speaking at the Electric Ireland GAA Minor Championship Finals Preview, Cavanagh does not think there was anything untoward going on. 'Well, I certainly don't have anything against Donegal, and I don't really think anybody else does if I'm honest,' laughed the three-time All-Ireland winner. 'When you go looking for causes, you will always find them, and Jim is big into psychology but I don't totally get it if I'm honest with you. 'I remember back in 2005, we had a drawn game in the Ulster Final with Armagh that needed a replay, then into the back door against Monaghan, then another drawn game and replay with Dublin in the Quarter-Final – so I think we played four, five, maybe even six weekends in a row. 'We maybe had one weekend off over the six weeks, so we just got into the routine of you had to take work off on Friday afternoon, we would meet in Monaghan, head to Dublin, play the game on Saturday night and head back up the road. 'To be honest, we absolutely loved it, and I think if you asked most footballers – like, would you rather go to Carrington House next weekend and do a block of training or would you rather play a game of football, and they would all rather play the game. 'The six day turnaround has always been there, I never felt we had any ability to change that, that's the rules, that is the system, and the fact that Tyrone beat Donegal in Ballybofey in the first round, and the fact that Donegal had to play in the preliminary round of Ulster, it means they are under a bit of pressure, but it isn't the competition's fault.' McGuinness was also vocal about having to travel to Hyde Park to play Mayo in the last game of the group stages when the venue was supposed to be a neutral ground because the stadium was so much closer to their opponents. There are those who think that the manager is trying to harness a siege mentality and create an 'us against them' kind of feeling among the players, but the ex-Tyrone midfielder isn't convinced that it sends the right message. He continued: 'If I was managing or coaching a team, I don't think I would be putting out noise, almost telling people that my team is tired. 'I wouldn't want that to filter into the players either, so I don't know if that is the external message to create a bit of a siege mentality and then there is an internal message saying otherwise. 'Their last game was in Ballybofey so I'm sure they were all in ice baths by six o'clock, and in the game itself they were able to rotate players, not pick up any injuries, so it doesn't feel like we will be talking about this in the grander scheme of things, especially if Donegal win on Saturday.'
