Mohloli learners ‘body shamed' and ‘name called' on WhatsApp channel
SHARPEVILLE.- The management of Mohloli Maths, Science and ICT School of Specialisation in Sharpeville frantically dealt with a situation, that if left unattended, could have had serious implications for both the management of the school and learners recently.
Sedibeng Ster has learned that there was a disturbing WhatsApp channel that was formed during the Easter holidays where certain learners from the school were being shamed, humiliated and called names. It is well-known that learners who are 'name called' or 'body shamed' end up resorting to drastic actions, some end up taking their lives.
Here's a breakdown of the harm, according to research:
• Name calling: can alter a child's inner world, leading to feelings of worthlessness, depression, and a loss of control.
• Body shaming: can have a dramatic impact on self-esteem, and even lead to physiological and behavioural changes linked to poor health and weight gain.
• Both name calling and body shaming: can heighten insecurities, damage self-esteem, and lead to negative self-talk.
In essence, both name calling and body shaming (on both adults and children) are forms of verbal abuse that can have lasting negative effects on a person's well-being.
The school's management was made aware of the channel and called for calm while it investigated the source of the channel. In one of its communication to parents the school issued a statement that said:
'We want to assure you that the school is taking this matter very seriously. We kindly ask for your support in speaking to your children about the importance of respect, kindness, and responsible use of social media. Let us work together to create a safe and positive environment for all our learners.'
Late last week, the school issued another communication (to parents) where it said that the culprit has been found and is going to go through proper school discipline procedure/s and that the disciplinary committee is handling the matter.
The Gauteng Department of Education also responded on the matter and said that it strongly condemn any acts of misconduct which seek to undermine the dignity of our learning institutions.
'Schools are urged to enforce their codes of conduct to deal with disciplinary matters. The Department continues to appeal to parents in assisting to enforce discipline in and outside the school environment. The matter is currently being investigated and the outcomes with determine actions to be taken. Accordingly, the victims were identified from the said WhatsApp group and were referred to Psycho-Social unit for necessary support and the said WhatsApp group has since been deleted,' Gauteng Department of Education's spokesperson, Steve Mabona said.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, one of the parents at the school said:
'This is a great school with amazing results, therefore we cannot allow such actions to derail our children. We will let the process of the disciplinary action take place as the culprit/s have seemingly been found. As in every other case where the law is involved, we should let the law take its course.'
Sharpeville police spokesperson, Constable Busisiwe Sango, said that no cases have been opened with them, however, Cyberbullying is a criminal offence, and the/a perpetrator can be charged with crimen injuria, assault or criminal defamation.

Why Floyd was dropped as SG
Once the deputy president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Floyd Shivambu's rapid fall within the MK Party has raised eyebrows, particularly as internal disputes and allegations mount. Image: Facebook Less than a year after joining the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party and rising to become its Secretary General, Floyd has been relieved of his SG duties. The party said Shivambu would be sent to Parliament, but not as Chief Whip or in any senior parliamentary role, but as an ordinary Member of Parliament (MP). The party confirmed the decision during a media briefing in Durban on Tuesday national organiser, Nathi Nhleko, announced the 'redeployment', saying it was a collective decision of the party's national officials. 'The national officials have come to a decision to redeploy Commander Floyd Shivambu as the secretary general of the party, and redeploy him to the National Assembly,' Nhleko said. The move comes amid growing tensions within the MK Party ranks. The position of Chief Whip was filled last week by Colleen Makhubele, leaving Shivambu's reassignment widely viewed as a political downgrade. Once the deputy president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Shivambu's rapid fall within the MK Party has raised eyebrows, particularly as internal disputes and allegations mount. Shivambu is accused by some party members of undermining former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, who serves as the party's provincial leader in Mpumalanga. Insiders allege that he withheld financial support from the province and failed to firmly back Mkhwebane, who was placed in her leadership position by party president Jacob Zuma. The Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) has expelled its Mpumalanga leader, Mary Phadi, accusing her of defying party processes by challenging her 2024 expulsion in court and organising an unauthorised factional meeting. In a letter dated February 27, 2025, MKP secretary-general Floyd Shivambu informed Phadi that her membership was cancelled with immediate effect. Phadi has, however, continued to hold the party, declaring herself the provincial leader. Zuma is said to be unhappy with Shivambu's handling of the situation, and that the situation has caused the party 'great embarrassment' Tensions have further escalated following Shivambu's controversial Easter weekend visit to the church of televangelist Shepherd Bushiri in Malawi. The visit sparked strong condemnation from both the MK Party and South Africa's Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, with officials calling it 'a blatant act of disrespect towards South Africa's legal system.'Bushiri and his wife, Mary, fled South Africa in 2020 while out on bail on charges including fraud and money laundering. Despite the backlash, Shivambu has stood by his decision to visit Bushiri, insisting it was a personal spiritual choice. 'One thing I will never apologise for is when I went to see Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, and he said, 'Let's go to church.' I said, 'I'll go to church,'' he told a TV news station in a recent interview. 'Going to religious institutions is a personal choice for anyone. I go to many religious institutions, including those whose faith I don't associate with, for different reasons. We have to listen to different people,' he added. The MK Party has formally distanced itself from the visit, stating it was not sanctioned by the leadership. However, Shivambu maintains he keeps Zuma informed. 'There is nothing I do without informing the president,' he said.

Malawian national arrested in KZN over a series of robberies
Police have arrested a 26-year-old Malawian national in Verulam CBD, KwaZulu-Natal, in connection with a series of robberies. A victim allegedly recognised the suspect near Todd Street by the railway station on Monday 2 June and alerted others, who then assaulted him before officers arrived. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), a group made up primarily of foreign nationals had already begun assaulting the suspect by the time officers arrived. The confrontation began when one of the robbery victims spotted the man and confronted him with the help of bystanders. Two weeks ago, the suspect allegedly forced his way into a home in Southridge, brandished a firearm, and robbed a man of his cellphone in front of the victim's minor daughter. Since the incident, the victim had been searching for the suspect and recognised him in the Verulam CBD. During questioning, the suspect admitted to selling the stolen phone to a foreign national in Durban. RUSA officers confirmed his involvement in at least three other robberies in Temple Valley. Officers recovered the firearm used in the crimes, later identified as a replica blank gun. RUSA officers restrained the suspect and handed him over to SAPS Verulam, where he remains in custody pending further investigation. WhatsApp group linked to July 2021 unrest lands four in court
The Hawks confirmed that more arrests are imminent. The Roodepoort Magistrates Court has granted R1 500 bail each to four suspects who appeared for incitement to commit public violence in connection with the July 2021 unrest. Bekuyise Cebekhulu, 58, from KwaZulu-Natal; Jimmy Sibeko, 44; Busisiwe Skhosana, 52; and Bogadi Mahisa, 49, from Gauteng, made their first appearance before the court on Tuesday morning. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) authorised arrest warrants for the suspects, who then handed themselves over through their legal representatives. Bail for suspected instigators of July 2021 unrest The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said they arrested the four suspects in connection with the unrest that took place in July 2021. The unrest in 2021 resulted in more than 350 people losing their lives and cost R50 billion in damages. The protests, violence, and looting erupted across the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Gauteng provinces following the imprisonment of former president Jacob Zuma. 'They'd post inciting messages which it is believed to have led to the public violence as well as the looting of retail stores in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal at the time,' Mogale said. The Hawks' Serious Organised Crime, Crimes Against the State (CATS) in Gauteng carried out extensive investigations. Accused of fuelling the unrest through WhatsApp messages Upon completion of the investigations, the DPP decided to prosecute those who posted messages which led to the unrest. The Roodepoort Magistrates Court granted Cebekhulu, Sibeko, Skhosana and Mahisa bail of R1 500 each. The suspects are expected to appear in court again on 2 July. Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, welcomed the arrests and commended the investigating team. 'DPCI shall continue to secure in court the attendance of anyone against whom sufficient evidence of committing a national priority offence is obtained, without fear, favour or prejudice,' Maj Gen Kadwa said. The Hawks confirmed that more arrests are imminent. Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla charged with terrorism The former president's daughter and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party MP Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla is also a suspect. She appeared at the Durban Magistrate's Court in January. In January last year, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) found there was no discernible connection between Zuma's incarceration and the violent unrest that occurred in July 2021. The SAHRC concluded that the timing of the events of the July unrest 'coincided' with Zuma's jailing and, therefore, 'it could not find evidence to link the two events'.
