Journalism opens as the 8-5 morning line favorite for the 150th Preakness Stakes
The Kentucky Derby runner up to Sovereignty opened at odds of 8-5 on Monday night when post positions were drawn for the middle leg of horse racing's Triple Crown. Journalism is again set to be ridden by jockey Umberto Rispoli and leave the starting gate from the No. 2 post.
Post time is set for 7:01 p.m. EDT on Saturday.
No. 7 Sandman is the 4-1 second choice in the field of nine, which does not include Sovereignty after his owners and trainer decided not to run the Derby winner two weeks after his triumph at Churchill Downs. The Preakness goes on without a true shot at a Triple Crown winner for a fifth time in seven years since Justify swept all three races in 2018.
Bob Baffert, who trained Justify and 2015 Triple Crown champion American Pharoah, is entering Goal Oriented looking for a record-extending ninth victory in the race. Fellow Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas can tie Baffert if he wins the Preakness back to back, this time with American Promise a year after Seize the Grey ended Mystik Dan's Triple Crown bid.
There are three Derby horses running in the $2 million Preakness at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore: Journalism, American Promise and Sandman, the latter of whom will be ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Mark Casse. American Promise drew the No. 3 post and opened at odds of 15-1.
New to the Triple Crown trail, along with No. 1 Goal Oriented (6-1) are No. 4 Heart of Honor (12-1), No. 5 Pay Billy (20-1), No. 6 River Thames (9-2), No. 8 Clever Again (5-1) and No. 9 Gosger (20-1).

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mauricio Pochettino got a feel for what the U.S. men's national team still faces at times during home games: a crowd rooting for the opposition. 'It was like to play in Guatemala,' the coach said after his team got two early goals from Diego Luna and hung on for a 2-1 win Wednesday night that advanced the Americans to the CONCACAF Gold Cup final. 'That was good for our players because it was an atmosphere that we didn't expect.' 'When we say the connection in between the fans and the team, that is the connection that we'd like to see in the World Cup. 'Diego was the example from January, how he is desperate to play for this shirt, for the national team and that is why now he is in the level that he showed,' Pochettino said. Striker Patrick Agyemang also has emerged from January camp to gain a starting berth at the Gold Cup, where many regulars are absent. 'Sometimes you say it's useless, people say it's useless," Pochettino said of the January camp. 'It's not useless. I think it's important, important for the national team, important for the team and very important for the country.' The Los Angeles Lakers are making a late push to get involved in the Kevin Durant trade. No, they wouldn't be getting Durant themselves. But they'd have a chance to make NBA history. The Athletic's Fred Katz reported Wednesday night that the Houston Rockets' Kevin Durant deal with the Phoenix Suns could expand into a seven-team bonanza. The five other teams reported to be involved are the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves Advertisement The KD trade hasn't been made official yet, which allows for the late change potential. It's not expected to include unexpected players, but rather combine some trades that are already agreed upon in an effort to most efficiently align the money movement. "In a would-be seven-team trade, there is an unprecedented amount of detail," Katz writes. "Unfortunately, while a seven-team trade would make for a thrilling topic at a cocktail party, there haven't been many unexpected developments in these negotiations. At least in the iterations of the deal discussed so far, most of the recognizable names are from trades that have already been agreed to and reported but not yet finalized." The rest of the players being discussed are all from already-agreed-upon draft-night trades that are yet to be finalized and can't be until July 6." This would be the largest trade in NBA history. Katz writes that the previous largest was a six-team deal last summer that ended with Klay Thompson in Dallas.
