Barcelona make enquiry for Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen
The 22-year-old Netherlands national team goalkeeper are reportedly looking for a long-term successor to Marc-Andre ter Stegen – who tore his ACL earlier this season. Verbruggen is high on the list for the goalkeeper position along with Joan García from Espanyol, reports Aouna.
Verbruggen the Seagulls from Anderlecht in July 2023 and has established himself as Brighton's first-choice keeper after rotating with Jason Steele under current Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi in the 2023-2024 season. Last season the Dutchman was an undisputed starter under Fabian Hurzeler, making 36 Premier League appearances this season.
He is currently under contract with the Albion until 2028, but has missed out on the latest Netherlands squad after he was reportedly 'struggling with physical complaints and needed time for the recovery process.'

During Brighton & Hove Albion's pre-season training camp in Spain this summer, with speculation swirling about his future, Matt O'Riley took the initiative to clarify with head coach Fabian Hurzeler his desire to make his move to the club work. 'I think he's naturally got trust in me just because he's seen the rhythm I've had in pre-season, which is great,' O'Riley told reporters after scoring a penalty in Saturday's season-opening 1-1 draw against Fulham, one of his former clubs, at the Amex Stadium. It has been quite a turnaround since he converted a penalty in the 4-1 away win against Tottenham Hotspur in the final fixture of last season. That was a rare moment of joy in a forgettable debut campaign with Brighton, following a £25million ($33.8m) move from Celtic. Nine minutes into his first Brighton appearance, in the Carabao Cup, O'Riley was injured in a tackle by Crawley Town defender Jay Williams. The resulting ankle ligament damage kept him out for 10 weeks and he was playing catch-up from then on, struggling to command a regular place and position. A knee injury in the 2-0 win at Ipswich Town in January was a further obstacle in O'Riley's quest to establish himself, with his next start not coming until April. He had thrived in two-and-a-half seasons in Glasgow, averaging a goal involvement every other game (27 goals and 35 assists in 124 appearances) under Ange Postecoglou and then Brendan Rodgers. Three of those assists in his final year with Celtic came in Champions League encounters with Atletico Madrid, Lazio and Feyenoord. Two goals and three assists in 21 Premier League appearances — only 11 of which were starts — in his first year at Brighton represented a significant drop in output. Then, while O'Riley was on international duty with Denmark (an England youth international, he has a Danish mother) in early June, reports surfaced there that he was not entirely happy with how Hurzeler had been using him in different midfield positions when he was fit to play. It only fueled further rumours that his first season at the Amex could also end up being his last. By mid-June, one Serie A club had pushed their interest as far as a verbal offer, initially on a loan basis. Brighton, however, were keeping their options open; they were not actively trying to sell O'Riley, but they understood his frustration and were not ruling out a move if it suited all parties. Advertisement O'Riley's reinvention was evident in the second match of that pre-season trip to Marbella against Las Palmas, a La Liga side last season. Playing behind Danny Welbeck, he contributed a goal and an assist in a 2-0 victory. In a post-match chat with reporters, including The Athletic, O'Riley looked and sounded in a better place. He spoke of feeling 'a lot more connected' in the playing system with Welbeck, operating closely together in and out of possession. 'I've come back this pre-season feeling a lot better, both just physically and mentally in general, and I think that's helping me on the pitch just be a lot more free,' he said, brushing off those reports from Denmark that hinted at dissatisfaction by remarking that 'people are good at twisting your words'. Asked by The Athletic how, at that stage, he saw his future, O'Riley added: 'Of course, you never know what happens, because football is a very unique business in that sense. In many ways, some things are out of your control at times. But at the same time, I'm here, I enjoy being here. I love spending time with my team-mates and the staff. I think that should be enough for now.' Fast forward to the start of the season, and three days before Fulham's visit, a source — speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships — told The Athletic that Hurzeler has been very happy with O'Riley and sees the 24-year-old as part of his plans for the 2025-26 campaign after a strong pre-season. Aside from O'Riley's sixth successful penalty from eight career attempts with Brighton, Celtic and Fulham, he showed up well behind Georginio Rutter on Saturday, operating mainly as the No 10 but sometimes more like a No 8, with licence to drop deeper at suitable moments. Hurzeler mentioned during his post-match press conference that O'Riley 'worked well defensively'. O'Riley's 88-minute contribution was his second-longest period on the pitch in any Brighton game, before he was replaced by James Milner. He has only seen out more minutes for the club once: the 1-1 home draw against Newcastle in May, in which he was taken off at 89 minutes. The extent of Riley's opportunities is likely to revolve around how Hurzeler uses Welbeck and Rutter. Welbeck at No 9 and Rutter at No 10 is arguably the most effective alliance, in which case O'Riley could be squeezed for chances again. Even so, he agrees that his future at the club is cemented more now than it was at the start of the summer transfer window. 'I think a good pre-season helps,' he said. 'That's something I didn't get last pre-season. I feel more integrated with the group. I feel like I'm getting more rhythm, feeling more settled in general.
