'Full throttle' after 'magic moment': Leverkusen back in title race

Yahoo17-03-2025
Title holders Bayer Leverkusen hope to have restarted the Bundesliga title duel with Bayern Munich thanks to a late 4-3 comeback victory at VfB Stuttgart.
Coach Xabi Alonso spoke of "a magic moment" as Leverkusen cut the gap on leaders Bayern to six points from an 88th-minute equalizer through an Angelo Stiller own goal and Patrik Schick's winner four minutes into stoppage time on Sunday night.
Leverkusen trailed 2-0 and 3-1 and seemed to be heading to a fourth straight defeat in all competitions before the stunning turnaround with the late goals they have become famous for.
Midfielder Robert Andrich promised some banter towards the Munich players at the national team camp for Nations League quarter-final matches against Italy, after which the title race will resume in a fortnight with the final eight matchdays.
Bayern and Leverkusen both suffered surprised home defeats a week ago before Bayern dropped points again on Saturday in a 1-1 draw at Union Berlin, which allowed Leverkusen to narrow the gap.
"We are now heading into the international break and the final phase of the season in a good mood and with postive energy," Alonso said.
Leverkusen return from the international break with games against relegation-threatened Bochum and Heidenheim, and with confidence restored in Stuttgart. They are also in the German Cup semi-finals.
Andrich said "we will see whether Bayern will give us a chance" to fight back, but Bayer want to be ready for such a scenario.
Andrich pledged that they want to continue "full throttle", put "as much pressure as possible" on Bayern in the league and win the Cup.
"Sometimes it takes victories like this one to show that the spirit is still there," defender Jonathan Tah said. "We believed until the end."
Bayer can cut the gap on Bayern to three points in the restart because they play Bochum the day before Bayern take on lowly St Pauli.
Leverkusen could also have more rest than Bayern in the final weeks because they were ousted by them in the Champions League.
The Cup semi at third tier Arminia Bielefeld in early April is their last mid-week match, while Bayern have a two-legged Champions League quarter-final against Inter Milan, and a possible semi-final tie.

Guirassy sends struggling Dortmund past Essen in German Cup

A 79th-minute goal from Serhou Guirassy took Borussia Dortmund to a 1-0 win at neighbours Essen in the first round of the German Cup on Monday. Five-time German Cup winners Dortmund struggled against their third division opponents, carving out few opportunities. With the match drifting towards extra time, Guirassy collected the ball outside the penalty area and hit a low shot inside the right post to take the lead for the visitors. In stoppage time, Essen midfielder Kelsey Owusu fouled Dortmund wingback Yan Couto and the Brazilian needed to be stretchered from the pitch. Dortmund and Essen lie 35 kilometres away from each other in Germany's crowded and football-mad Ruhr region. The last time the two sides met was in 2008, when future Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp made his debut as Dortmund manager. Klopp would go on to win two Bundesliga titles and one German Cup as Dortmund coach, along with taking the club to the 2013 Champions League final, where they lost to rivals Bayern Munich. Earlier on Monday, Mainz, Hertha Berlin and Fortuna Duesseldorf also made it through their first round ties against lower division opposition. dwi/bsp

Bayern Munich blame Nick Woltemade media circus on Stuttgart as director denies role in transfer circus

Stuttgart rejected Bayern Munich's €60m offer for Woltemade Bayern's sporting director stressed the club never discussed figures Says there's no update on his transfer Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? Bayern's third bid of €60 million (£52m/$70m) for Woltemade was rejected by Stuttgart, who have now reportedly upped their asking price to €75m (£65m/$88m). When asked for the latest update on Woltemade's transfer, Freund claimed the matter was handled internally and no details were released. He further blamed the Stuttgart camp for causing the media frenzy surrounding the player. THE BIGGER PICTURE Bayern reignited their attempts to sign Woltemade as the striker asked both clubs to enter negotiations but Stuttgart once again rejected their advances. Stuttgart have reiterated their stance multiple times that they plan on keeping the player, with Stuttgart sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth and CEO Alexander Wehrle both stating that Woltemade will play with them next season. When asked about the forward's future, the sporting director clearly stated that they are not the ones using the situation to generate talks. WHAT FREUND SAID In a press conference, Freund confirmed that there have been no talks with Stuttgart and insisted Bayern are not responsible for all the media speculation. He said at a press conference: "Bayern wasn't the match that generated so much discussion. We never commented on deadlines or figures. There's no update either. We play against Stuttgart tomorrow, where the player is under contract." Earlier Stuttgart coach was also asked about Woltemade's future, to which he said: "Nick is a part of our team and a very important building block in our team. Nothing has changed about that." WHAT NEXT FOR BAYERN? Stuttgart's new price tag makes it increasingly difficult for the German striker to leave the club with the striker's agent having labelled Stuttgart's demands as "completely unfounded". The two clubs are now set to face each other in the German Super Cup on August 17.

Mainz overcomes Dynamo Dresden 1-0 in German Cup, Hertha survives scare

BERLIN (AP) — Nadiem Adli's brilliant free kick was enough for Mainz to overcome Dynamo Dresden 1-0 in the first round of the German Cup on Monday. The former Germany midfielder lifted the ball over the defensive wall and in off the left post in the 22nd minute, the only goal from a game in which second-division club Dresden missed more chances. In the final minute, Jakob Lemmer hit the side netting, leaving many home fans with their heads in their hands. Mainz coach Bo Henriksen was sent off shortly beforehand for holding onto the ball as the tension increased in a nervy finale. Hertha through on penalties Sebastian Grönning scored the winning spot kick for Hertha Berlin to progress against second-division rival Prueßen Münster 5-3 on penalties after their game ended scoreless with extra time. The home team had by far the greater chances — 27 shots at goal compared to Hertha's 11 — but couldn't make any of them count. Borussia Dortmund was playing later at nearby Rot-Weiss Essen. Essen, which won the German championship in 1955, is in the third division. ___
