‘My first priority is to assert myself' – Robert Andrich discusses his Bayer Leverkusen future

Joining Bayer Leverkusen from Union Berlin in 2021, Robert Andrich is now one of the club's longest serving players with 153 appearances across all competitions. The Germany international will be playing under his third coach at the club after Erik ten Hag replaced Xabi Alonso, and while he wants to assert himself, the 31-year-old also can't rule out a departure. Speaking to Bild, Andrich said: 'If I somehow notice that the coach isn't keen on me – you might find that out over time – or that things aren't a good fit, then I have to think about it. But my first priority is to assert myself and be the No. 1 in my position in the starting eleven. That's the only thing that's on my mind.' Advertisement With the arrival of Aleix Garcia and Exequiel Palacios' return from injury, Andrich played fewer minutes (2,930 in the 2023/24 season compared to 2,206 last season) and in a World Cup year, the German wants to be at the forefront of Julian Nagelsmann's plans. As reported in April, Andrich has already thought about leaving Bayer Leverkusen to enhance his national team prospects. But with a desire to stay and fight for his place, the 31-year-old could yet prove important to Ten Hag. Is Granit Xhaka on his way out at Bayer Leverkusen? One Bundesliga and German Cup champion that does appear to be on the way out at Bayer Leverkusen is Granit Xhaka – a player whom Andrich struck up an incredible understanding with during their unbeaten double winning campaign. Advertisement Bayer Leverkusen have already rejected an €8m offer from Saudi Pro League club Neom SC for the Swiss midfielder, and now Premier League side Sunderland have entered the race to sign Xhaka. Andrich self-critical after Leverkusen's cup exit: "By far our worst game of the season"

Andrich self-critical after Leverkusen's cup exit: "By far our worst game of the season" Bayer Leverkusen were sensationally knocked out of the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday, losing 2-1 to third-tier side Arminia Bielefeld in the semi-final. In a post-match interview, Bayer 04 midfielder Robert Andrich didn't mince his words when it came to criticising his side's performance. Advertisement "That was by far our worst game of the season. And also the most important one," said Andrich. "Bielefeld deserved the win tonight, which means we did plenty of things wrong. 'We screwed up today. That has to be said quite clearly." Leverkusen's only chance of silverware this season now lies in the Bundesliga, where the reigning champions are six points behind Bayern Munich.

Leverkusen midfielder considering change of scenery

Robert Andrich could seek a summer move if his playing time at Bayer Leverkusen doesn't improve significantly, according to Kicker. The German international has seen his role diminish this season and is currently behind Granit Xhaka, Exequiel Palacios, and Aleix Garcia in the central midfield pecking order at BayArena. Advertisement Kicker reports that Andrich is concerned his chances of making Germany's 2026 World Cup squad are slipping due to his lack of minutes. The 30-year-old recently lost his place in Julian Nagelsmann's starting lineup to Leon Goretzka. Andrich, whose contract runs until 2028, has watched Leverkusen's last two Bundesliga matches from the bench.

Robert Andrich the latest player to consider jumping ship at Bayer Leverkusen

Midfielder Robert Andrich is reportedly the latest in a long line of actors considering leaving Bayer Leverkusen. With it looking likely that the defending Bundesliga champions will lose head coach Xabi Alonso and star player Florian Wirtz, it seems as if virtually everyone is considering jumping ship. Kicker reports that Andrich is dissatisfied with his role at his current club and wishes to move elsewhere to enhance his German national team prospects. Andrich has fallen out of favour at Germany's red company team since the turn of the calendar year. The 30-year-old did not start in any of Leverkusen's four 2025 Champions League fixtures. Since the winter break, the 18-times-capped German international has logged just 714 of a possible 1920 minutes of action. Andrich has remained unused on the bench in his team's last two league encounters. Advertisement Leverkusen midfielders Exequiel Palacios and Aleix García are currently ahead of Andrich in the pecking order. To maintain his hopes of remaining on German national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann's radar, the Potsdam native must contemplate finding a team in which he can obtain more playing time. Andrich's role in Leverkusen's historic league-and-and-cup winning campaign last season earned him a lucrative contract extension in August. It was also the Potsdam-native's current club that helped launch his national team career. The veteran journeyman only earned his first senior team national cap in November 2023 at the age of 29. Loyalty to Leverkusen nevertheless remains in short supply these days. Andrich's national team colleague Jonathan Tah confirmed his departure from die Werkself this week. GGFN | Peter Weis

'Full throttle' after 'magic moment': Leverkusen back in title race

Title holders Bayer Leverkusen hope to have restarted the Bundesliga title duel with Bayern Munich thanks to a late 4-3 comeback victory at VfB Stuttgart. Coach Xabi Alonso spoke of "a magic moment" as Leverkusen cut the gap on leaders Bayern to six points from an 88th-minute equalizer through an Angelo Stiller own goal and Patrik Schick's winner four minutes into stoppage time on Sunday night. Leverkusen trailed 2-0 and 3-1 and seemed to be heading to a fourth straight defeat in all competitions before the stunning turnaround with the late goals they have become famous for. Midfielder Robert Andrich promised some banter towards the Munich players at the national team camp for Nations League quarter-final matches against Italy, after which the title race will resume in a fortnight with the final eight matchdays. Bayern and Leverkusen both suffered surprised home defeats a week ago before Bayern dropped points again on Saturday in a 1-1 draw at Union Berlin, which allowed Leverkusen to narrow the gap. "We are now heading into the international break and the final phase of the season in a good mood and with postive energy," Alonso said. Leverkusen return from the international break with games against relegation-threatened Bochum and Heidenheim, and with confidence restored in Stuttgart. They are also in the German Cup semi-finals. Andrich said "we will see whether Bayern will give us a chance" to fight back, but Bayer want to be ready for such a scenario. Andrich pledged that they want to continue "full throttle", put "as much pressure as possible" on Bayern in the league and win the Cup. "Sometimes it takes victories like this one to show that the spirit is still there," defender Jonathan Tah said. "We believed until the end." Bayer can cut the gap on Bayern to three points in the restart because they play Bochum the day before Bayern take on lowly St Pauli. Leverkusen could also have more rest than Bayern in the final weeks because they were ousted by them in the Champions League. The Cup semi at third tier Arminia Bielefeld in early April is their last mid-week match, while Bayern have a two-legged Champions League quarter-final against Inter Milan, and a possible semi-final tie.
