Groom's ‘humiliating' act on wedding day exposes vile trend

News.com.au17-07-2025
A groom who deliberately dropped his bride into a pool on their wedding day has exposed a worrying new trend that experts warn can be extremely damaging to relationships.
The alarming act was captured by wedding photographer Emad Joe, who lives and works in Egypt, after he attempted to create a special wedding shot for the newlyweds.
The snap should have shown the husband holding his new wife as they lean over the dark water, the pair lovingly looking into each other's eyes.
But instead, he captured the horrifying moment the groom seemingly chose to let go of his wife as she leaned onto his arm, instantly breaking her trust.
After the young bride fell into the water, a look of sheer horror could be seen across her face as she emerged from the water.
In contrast, the groom can be seen appearing to cheer with delight at her suffering, with the footage showing him throw his hands up in the air to celebrate his actions.
The clip has understandably sparked uproar online, prompting Australian relationship experts to weigh in, labelling the act 'disrespectful' and 'concerning'.
'Unless this has been specifically spoken about beforehand, and she's given her consent to be in on the joke, this behaviour is disrespectful and alarming,' Melbourne psychologist Carly Dober told news.com.au.
'We know that for so many people a wedding day is a life highlight and something that they have been looking forward to for years.
'While not every wedding day will be 'perfect', ideally all parties involved look back on the day with good feelings and good memories.
'Behaviour such as this can highlight the disparities in some heterosexual relationships where women's feelings aren't valued and they might not be respected by their partner.'
Indeed, many social media users – notably predominantly women – were horrified by the groom's antics, claiming it was an indicator the couple might not last.
'This is grounds for an annulment,' reasoned one.
'She could have drowned, all that fabric from the wedding dress in the water is no joke,' pointed out another.
As another argued: 'The way he just drops her, then pumps his fists in victory. Run, honey. This won't get better.'
Others suggested the act was part of a growing 'humiliation' trend that has seen grooms behave unfavourably towards their new brides, such as by making crude wedding vows or smearing cake on her face.
'Why do men constantly want to embarrass their wives?' one woman asked.
While one speculated: 'The way he threw his arms up as if he triumphed over her.'
Lauren Muratore, an accredited psychosexual therapist from Melbourne, agrees.
'Embarrassing any human being is bullying, it is derogatory in nature, and this is not acceptable in any relationship,' she told news.com.au.
'There's a difference between humour and jest, but there's no place for degradation ever between couples, the trend suggests men are trying to reassert their power to some degree.
'Or perhaps maybe they feel like their masculinity is at stake.'
Ms Dober, the clinic owner at Enriching Lives Psychology, echoed these concerns, stressing that viral videos of these sorts of antics can 'normalise' the apparent poor behaviour, while also urging people to take caution when passing judgement.
'It looks like a spur of the moment decision and it looks very disrespectful, so this is not something that we want to encourage more people to do,' she said.
'However, again if this is a lighthearted joke between both parties who are fully consenting and open to it that is a different story.
'If this isn't a joke between them, and this is something that he's done without her consent- there can be pretty catastrophic emotional consequences.
'Not only may she feel embarrassed, unsure about how seriously he takes her and their relationship, she may also experience a lack of confidence and security, anxious and depressed about how the day went, and she may also have to face some difficult conversations with her friends and family.'
Ms Muratore, who gave a TEDx Talk titled 'Sexual Sovereignty – who is the gatekeeper of sex?' in August 2024, added anyone who 'purposely erodes trust to make other people laugh' isn't a person who appears to consider their partner's needs.
'It showing a power balance and that there is a massive lack of respect in the relationship,' she said.
'There's a chance this is a stunt for views, but if it wasn't, you have to ask, 'would she be able to trust her husband?'.
'Trust is a funny thing that can easily be corroded as well as built, but it takes the a long time to build back up and a willingness of two partners.'
Shawnda Patterson, a popular dating coach, warned that 'every wedding season videos like this flood our timelines' and it highlights how some men take little thought about the impacts 'pulling a prank' on their bride can have.
'Whether its with their vows, smashing cake in her face and now it's letting her fall into the pool, ruining her hair, her make-up and everything she did to prepare for that day,' she said in a viral video on TikTok.
'Two things men like this don't consider, and that's time and place. He could play like this on the honeymoon when the stakes aren't high, when hundreds of thousands of dollars aren't on the line … this isn't the time to be playing around.
'A stunt like this is only funny if everybody laughs. Shame on you.'
Many viewers agreed, with one responding: 'The day she felt she was prettier than ever, he destroyed everything in two minutes.'
'And this is why, I'll forever be single,' remarked another.
As one noted: 'She trusted him and he showed her exactly who he is.'

Home and Away star Lukas Radovich marries partner in lavish Sydney wedding

Former Home and Away star Lukas Radovich has married his partner in a glamorous wedding in Sydney. The Australian actor, who played Ryder Jackson on the Seven soap from 2017 until 2022, shared a sweet video of his first dance with now-husband, professional netballer Liam Forcadilla. The happy couple married on Friday in a grand celebration at the Grounds of Alexandria, which was attended by fellow stars on the long-running soap, including Emily Weir, Shane Withington, Courtney Miller and Sophie Dillman. Taking to Instagram, Radovich and Forcadilla shared a clip of themselves dancing to Taylor Swift's Lover, as silver confetti dropped from the ceiling while they shared a kiss. Attendees could be heard cheering as the pair slow danced on the dance floor. 'You can hear the love in the room,' Forcadilla wrote alongside the video. Radovich, 30, became engaged to Forcadilla, who plays for the Australian men's netball team, in February last year. The duo met on Tinder and began dating in 2020. After departing Home and Away, Radovich opened up to the The Daily Telegraph about his sexuality for the first time. He said he came out to his parents just prior to accepting a role on the hit TV show. 'The reason I wasn't publicly talking about it when I was on the show was because I was still coming to terms with my sexuality,' Radovich said in the 2023 interview. 'If I had have been on the show now, it might have been a different story. I definitely think when I was in my young 20s, I was still discovering myself and that now I feel comfortable enough to be able to talk about it. 'The last five years has been quite a big journey for me, one, because of the show but also too coming into my own sense of self, just being comfortable I guess. 'I can't even remember what point I started telling people but it was definitely before the show. Coming into that world, I am quite a shy person by nature, quite introverted, so it takes a while for me to warm up to talking about things. And then after that it just wasn't an issue.'

Halle Berry and Djimon Hounsou cast in Red Card

Halle Berry and Djimon Hounsou are to star in the trafficking thriller Red Card. The duo have signed up to feature in the Africa-set movie that is being directed by Rust helmer Joel Souza from a script written by Bad Boys creator George Gallo and Green Book scribe Nick Vallelonga. Djimon plays Max Elmi, a veteran ranger battling poachers in Kenya, who teams up with Dane Harris - a tenacious special agent and a member of a team led by FBI supervisor Amanda Bruckner (Berry) working with international law enforcement to combat trafficking rings overseas. When Max's son, a talented footballer, falls prey to a deceitful sports agent and vanishes into the North African criminal underworld - he will stop at nothing to find his child, leaving Dane to decide how far he is prepared to go. The pair's odyssey takes them from quiet villages in Kenya to the simmering streets of Casablanca and the film has been endorsed by the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. Souza said: "Red Card is a fantastic script, from writers who have created film classics, and Djimon is an actor of uncommon power and depth. "Together, we all look forward to telling a thrilling story we truly believe will grip audiences worldwide." Casting is underway to decided who will play the role of Dane, whilst filming is scheduled to take place towards the end of the year. Halle became the first - and remains the only - African-American woman to win the Best Actress Oscar in 2002 for her role in Monster's Ball but previously lamented how the historic success didn't lead to more satisfying roles. The 58-year-old star said: "I was very disheartened after winning that gorgeous guy. I was sure the script truck would just back itself up to my front door. That's what I thought would happen. Like: now I'm going to get all the great parts. But unfortunately for me, that was not my reality. I've been continuing to try to make ways for myself. Because it's hard. I don't often find great parts that I really, really love to sink my teeth into." Despite her lack of satisfaction, Halle is determined to remain positive. The Moonfall star said: "I'm generally a very positive person. I'm a glass-half-full kind of person. I'm not going to sit around bashing things. I'm here to work. I have more hills to climb as long as I'm here. I've got more things to learn. I've got more challenges to face. I can continue to get better." Halle also played Bond girl Jinx in the 2002 film Die Another Day - in which she starred opposite Pierce Brosnan's 007 - and admits that appearing in the long-running spy franchise "wasn't on her wish list" initially. She said last year: "Bond wasn't on my wish list, no, to be in one, but I loved the movies, always, but having been in one, I feel like I'm a part of cinematic history. Those movies are iconic. They will forever be a part of our history, and I'm really honoured to have been a part of one, especially with Pierce."

Squirming Dr Chris Brown grilled about new ‘love' on-air

Well, this is awkward. As news circulated today that Aussie TV presenter Dr. Chris Brown is in a new relationship, the super-private star had to front up for a pre-scheduled live radio interview and spent half his time batting away questions about his personal life. Dr Chris appeared in-studio at Nova 96.9's Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie this morning, ostensibly to talk up Sunday's TV Week Logie Awards on his network, Seven. But all hosts Fitzy and Wippa wanted to talk about was the 'glamorous TV publicist' he's been quietly dating over the past few months, as reported by Queensland-based publicist Lorraine Monforte, 41, worked behind-the-scenes at Brown's former employer Ten for the past 13 years, but was recently made redundant by the network. Usually one to keep his dating life private, Brown squirmed as the hosts tried to prise more details about the new romance out of him, live on-air. 'Take that smirk off your face,' Brown warned, as Wippa suggested they had 'so much to talk about.' 'I do love the fact that you guys are so fixated on my happiness, but also my personal life,' he said sarcastically. 'Of all the mornings where this story just happens to find its way out …' Brown was evasive when the hosts asked how long he and Monforte had been dating – but in batting away their question, he did manage to drop the 'L' word. 'You know, time's irrelevant in love, it just drifts.' Brown confirmed that Monforte had met his family, and sounded very content when the hosts asked if he was happy in his new relationship. 'I am happy, thank you,' he said. But the pair couldn't resist making him squirm a bit more before moving on to Logies chat. 'I don't want you to go into details, but where was the first kiss? On the lips?' Wippa asked, while Fitzy joked that he could 'hear the howling of single women in Bondi right now.' While he's been a fixture on Australian television for more than 20 years, Brown has usually managed to keep his dating life under wraps. He was most recently linked to Sydney model Brooke Meredith, whom he dated from 2020 until 2022. Speaking to Stellar in May last year, he told the outlet the 'right girl will be there at the right time', while confirming he was single at the time of publication. 'I would still like to have kids – I still feel that's very much a priority,' he told the magazine. 'Would I like to have done something about that in the last five years? Probably. But it hasn't worked out that way. 'If it hasn't happened naturally and I'm not a dad yet, then I'm OK with that. I'm not worried. I feel like it will happen when it happens. The last thing I want to do is force it and end up in a situation where I feel like I've rushed it. But, yeah, I'm taking my sweet time.'
