Trump order excludes aircraft, OJ, energy from Brazil tariffs
WASHINGTON - The U.S. excluded several of Brazil's major exports from the 50% tariff President Donald Trump signed into an executive order on Wednesday, including orange juice, some aircraft, wood pulp and energy products, lifting shares of planemaker Embraer and pulpmaker Suzano.
In a fact sheet published on Wednesday, the U.S. government tied the tariffs to Brazil's prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is standing trial under charges of plotting a coup to overturn his 2022 electoral loss.
Still, the executive order excluded dozens of key Brazilian exports to the United States. Among the top concerns in the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva were aircraft produced by Embraer, which exports 45% of its commercial aircraft and 70% of its executive jets to the U.S.
Analysts had also warned of a serious potential impact on Suzano, one the world's largest wood pulp producers.
Embraer shares rose 11% in Sao Paulo and Suzano gained over 1% in afternoon trading.
The executive order came as the U.S. announced sanctions on a Brazilian Supreme Court justice overseeing Bolsonaro's trial, accusing the judge of authorizing arbitrary pre-trial detentions and suppressing freedom of expression. REUTERS

Fire at Russia's Afipsky oil refinery extinguished after drone attack, emergency services say
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox MOSCOW - A fire at the Afipsky oil refinery in Russia's Krasnodar region, caused by fallen drone debris, was extinguished, local emergency services said on Thursday. The Russian Defence Ministry said air defence systems had shot down nine Ukrainian drones over the region overnight. It was not immediately clear what the extent of the damage was at the Afipsky refinery, which together with the Krasnodar refnery processed 7.2 million metric tons of crude oil in 2024. Market sources said the disruption at the Afipsky refinery may lead to lower use of crude, potentially adding extra barrels to Russia's exports in August. Ukraine has regularly struck Russian crude refineries, pumping stations and ports used for oil and gas exports in drone attacks. Russia plans to increase exports from its western ports to nearly two million barrels per day in August, about 200,000 bpd more than a previous estimate, after two refineries were left with more crude to export after cutting runs following Ukrainian drone attacks. The Ryazan and Novokuibyshevsk refineries, both operated by the Rosneft oil company, halted operations on several crude distillation units following the drone strikes on August 2. Repairs will take about a month, three industry sources said. REUTERS

Cambodia and Thailand agree to Asean observers to ensure ceasefire holds
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox The peace conditions were formulated during three days of talks between senior officials in Kuala Lumpur. KUALA LUMPUR – Cambodia and Thailand's top defence officials agreed on Aug 7 to allow observers from the Asean regional bloc to inspect disputed border areas and help ensure hostilities do not resume following a violent five-day conflict that ended in a ceasefire late in July. The South-east Asian neighbours saw the worst fighting in over a decade in July , including exchanges of artillery fire and jet fighter bombing runs that claimed at least 43 lives and displaced more than 300,000 people on both sides of the border. Fighting continued despite diplomatic interventions from China and Malaysia, chair of the regional bloc Asean, both calling for restraint. The leaders of Cambodia and Thailand came to the negotiating table only when US President Donald Trump told them that tariff negotiations would not continue unless there was peace, Reuters exclusively reported. Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Seiha and Thailand's acting defence minister Nattaphon Narkphanit met at Malaysia's Armed Forces headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 7 to thrash out the terms of a permanent cessation of hostilities. 'There will be an observation team of Asean military attaches based in Thailand and Cambodia, led by Malaysia,' Mr Nattaphon told reporters at a press conference after the meeting, adding that foreign inspectors based in either country would not cross the border. 'Thailand and Cambodia are neighbours with a shared border that can move away from each other... a resolution will allow our people to return to peaceful lives,' he said. Top stories Swipe. Select. The peace conditions were formulated during three days of talks between senior officials in Kuala Lumpur and were finalised on the fourth day in the presence of observers from China and the United States. 'Both sides agreed on the terms of implementation of the ceasefire and improving communication between the two armies,' Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on social media. Three men arrested in Germany in suspected far-right Reichsbuerger plot probe
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox BERLIN - Three men were arrested in Bavaria on Thursday as part of an investigation into the far-right Reichsbuerger group, suspected of plotting to violently overthrow the last German government and the constitutional order, Munich prosecutors said. The Reichsbuerger (Citizens of the Reich) movement rejects modern German democracy as illegitimate and its followers argue they are citizens of a monarchy that endured after Germany's defeat in World War One, despite its formal abolition. Dozens of members, whose leaders include German aristocrat and property investor Heinrich XIII Prince Reuss, are on trial across Germany after the suspected plot was uncovered in 2022. The defendants have denied charges of terrorism and high treason. Prosecutors said they believed the men arrested on Thursday, who were not named, supported the movement or were involved in plot preparations. Specifically, they are suspected of taking part in firearms training in 2022 at a former army shooting range with members of the group who have already been arrested. "According to the available information, these shooting exercises served to prepare for a possible attack on the German Bundestag (lower house of parliament)," prosecutors said. Searches were conducted at eight locations in the states of Bavaria, Saxony, and Thuringia early on Thursday. REUTERS
