Doyel: Three columns and a wedding – starring Caitlin Clark, Dave Portnoy and Daniel Jones

Indianapolis Star20 hours ago
My last few weeks:
Got married. Honeymooned. Came off vacation with two columns in my first four hours back. By dinner time was being attacked on Twitter by those idiots at Barstool Sports.
How you doing?
Let's Mailbagg™!
What does it look like in my IndyStar text message group – free for readers, whether you subscribe or not – when I send a text? (Close to 3,000 people have signed up. Join us at the link below any of my columns, or click that sucker right here.)
It looks like this:
From: Me to the group, Monday morning
Good morning guys. Welcome back! Well, please welcome me back. I return to you after two weeks away as a newly married man (!!), and now I'm ready to write.
I need to tell my boss that I'm writing an unbudgeted column today about the WNBA without Caitlin Clark. I figured I'd do that two-birds, one-stone thing and tell you instead – because he's in our group chat too! As I tell him always: Love my bosses. As I hope I've made clear: Love this group, too.
I'll share the column here first, later today.
From: Me to the group, two hours later
Here it is, peeps, and I had a BLAST writing it. As I wrote:
The Indiana Fever and WNBA TV ratings are surviving without injured Caitlin Clark. Are people clicking that? No?
OK, try this:
'Minnesota man who found car while fishing probably solved 1967 cold case'
My latest:
Doyel: Despite Caitlin Clark's absence, WNBA and Fever are doing well. You click that?
Here came the responses. I see them all. Readers see only what I share with the group.
From: Dan K.
Every case here in Minnesota is a cold case.
Funny, Dan. You know I wrote about actual sports, right? Including Caitlin Clark?
From: David M.
That Minnesota man went missing just 10 months before Caitlin Clark's mom was born. Coincidence?!??
Maybe I should've written about Kelsey Mitchell.
From: Jim G.
I get your point about Kelsey Mitchell, but I would be interested in her numbers without Caitlin last year vs. this year.
Oh that's right – I did write about Kelsey Mitchell! And it's a great question. As I wrote, Mitchell has taken off in Clark's absence this season:
Mitchell in 13 games this season with Clark: 19.2 ppg, 2.2 apg.
Mitchell in 22 games without Clark: 21.3 ppg, 4.1 apg.
As for 2024? I can't do it. Clark (and Mitchell) played all 40 games last season, when Mitchell averaged 19.2 ppg and 1.8 apg. She's a pure scorer with Clark at the point, and but something else when the ball is in her hands more. In six seasons before Clark arrived, Mitchell averaged 16.4 ppg and 3.0 apg.
From: David S.
I've enjoyed being in this group, but have never contributed a text reply until now:
I can't tell you how glad I was to read this column and how you particularly call out the daily flood of clickbait, er, "BREAKING sports news." My browser noted earlier this year my increased interest in the Fever, and for a few weeks or so I took their bait until realizing the chum it is. My refusal to click on their bait for months notwithstanding, they continue to swarm my entire news portal pages.
Online tracking algorithms are awful, maybe even evil, and I don't use that word lightly. And the average person – me, on occasion – falls for it. We get these crap headlines and think, 'Well, it must be true.'
No. It's not.
As for me, I'll keep writing the way I write, occasionally going against the grain not to be contrarian but to be honest, fair and decent. The world needs more honesty, fairness and decency. Let's all do our part.
From: Me to the group again Monday, a few hours later
OK, so I got frisky and wrote a second column. Hey, I've been off for 17 days and am ready to go.
The Department of Homeland Security has turned Speedway, Indiana, into a punch line – the Speedway Slammer, really? – and today IndyCar embraced far-right cretin Dave Portnoy.
Revolting.
My latest:
Doyel: IndyCar hops into bed with Barstool's Dave Portnoy? That's not Penske Perfect
From: Tom B.
My family lives in Nantucket in the summer. Every morning I get coffee and some food at Nantucket Meat & Fish Market when I am in ACK. Every morning, I see Dave Portnoy getting coffee there.
By the way, Roger Penske belongs to my family's golf club in Nantucket. Might be their connection.
That's the three-letter IATA code for Nantucket Memorial Airport? "ACK"?
That's also my reaction to your text, and this whole story. Ack.
Unless there's an airport called UGH.
From: Sandra L.
OMG. I had no idea Roger Penske was far-right. Why can't he stick to business at hand? Thanks for sharing this info.
History will remember whose side everyone chose. That's all I'm saying about this, for now.
From: Sally M.
I've been an IndyCar fan my entire life. I may be boycotting the final two races.
You've chosen wisely.
From: Kris S.
Couldn't agree more, and that's coming from a lifetime Republican.
As I wrote in the column: The problem is not 'conservatives' or 'Republicans.' I've voted that way several times over the years. The problem is the hate being passed off as patriotism, and the blind support for it. And that's all I'm saying about this, for now!
From: Alan M.
I'm a Hoosier-born, lifelong Indy 500 fan (75 years so far). Thanks for your column on IndyCar, Penske, concentration camps and the knuckle-draggers who like them. Thank you very much for opening my eyes to who Penske is. Well, in this country, I should've guessed that a really rich guy is probably a (jerk).
What's baffling is the rush to love rich people because, and only because, they're rich. Nothing else explains the popularity of Elon Musk.
From: Mark P.
I've criticized you in the past for voicing political views, but I agree that politicians should stick to politics. In this case, when politics intersects with sports, I can't blame you for joining the fray. However, in a better world I just wish to God we could keep them apart!
I'd love to write only about sports! I was a lot more popular with readers who don't know me – to know me is to love me (ahem) – before populist politicians began using sports for insincere and nefarious reasons. I could sit it out, like a coward, but won't do it. Can't watch what's happening without writing what I think.
If people don't like it, see ya.
From: David D., Monday at 1 pm
Congrats Gregg!!!
Thanks David! You've been so good to me here, with your texts over the last few … hang on. My phone is pinging again. Just got another text. Let me check it.
From: David D., Monday at 5 pm
We are done. You can delete me. I reread the Portnoy article. You are so far off-base it's ridiculous.
Let me see if I understand: You're choosing Dave Portnoy over me? Deleting you will be my honor.
See ya.
From: Me to the group, Tuesday
Daniel Jones has beaten out Anthony Richardson for the Colts' QB job. That's a disaster for the team in every way.
Jones is a Colts newcomer with a career 24-44-1 record as a starter. Richardson, in Year 3, can't beat him out? That suggests AR5 is a bust. Or the Colts failed him. Or both.
My latest:
Doyel: Daniel Jones over Anthony Richardson? Here comes another franchise overhaul
From: Kekoa C.
I guess the next move is to trade Alec Pierce, since he won't be needed as a deep threat.
And people call me a downer?
From: Jeff D.
The floor for a Colts/Daniel Jones season is 8-9? Yeah, you're still on a honeymoon high.
And I called that last dude a downer?
From: Tim S.
This is my first time reaching out to you. Most times I'm on board, but I have to disagree with you here. With a better offensive line and better receivers, why can't Jones be the second coming of Jared Goff?
Not a bad thought, Tim. Jones has never played with as much talent as RB Jonathan Taylor, TE Tyler Warren and WR's Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs and Alec Pierce. If the offensive line holds up, maybe I'm selling him short.
Maybe.
From: Sara S.
Omg thank you for writing that. I watched Daniel Jones' interview and had the exact same reaction about his demeanor. Like how does he act when he's NOT excited about something? Ugh.
Maybe he's inspirational somewhere.
Maybe.
From: Steve B.
You lose the old English teacher in me anytime you sprinkle a jigger of politics with the sports.
What does a jigger of politics have to do with your background as an English teacher? It would be different, I guess, if you taught political science. And anyway, if I'm going to lose an old English teacher, it oughta be for the way I break spelling and grammar rules. When I feel like it. For effect.
From: D. Wright
I put it back in the back.
Wrong number, my friend. But what did you put in the back? Was it dark chocolate? I'll be right over to get it.

Shemar Moore Surprises Superfan Paige Bueckers as She Smashes WNBA History with 44-Point Game

NEED TO KNOW Actor Shemar Moore surprised WNBA star Paige Bueckers at her game in Los Angeles on Aug. 20 Bueckers previously said Moore, along with Ellen Pompeo, would be her dream celebrity guests to attend a Dallas Wings game Bueckers scored 44 points and continued her campaign for the WNBA's rookie of the year award Paige Bueckers had a very special guest cheering her on as she made WNBA history. The Dallas Wings star, 23, traveled to Los Angeles for her team's Aug. 20 road game against the Sparks, where one of her favorite actors, Criminal Minds star Shemar Moore, cheered her on as she dropped 44 points — the league's most-ever from a rookie. The previous record-holder was Candace Parker with 34 points. The actor brought his daughter Frankie and his girlfriend to the game at Los Angeles' Arena, where Bueckers posed for photos with the young girl and Moore after the game. During their meeting, a very excited and surprised Bueckers told Moore, "You're my favorite, bro," Earlier this summer, Bueckers revealed to Self that her dream celebrity guests at a Wings game would be Moore, 55, and Grey's Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo. Moore saw that Bueckers was a fan, and promised to come see her play. "Ayyeee @paigebueckers 👀 I see you and I heard you Baby Girl!!!! You never know when your boy might show up and HOLLA your name at one of your games," Moore wrote on July 21. The Wings and Bueckers, who helped lead the UConn Huskies to the NCAA championship before she was drafted to the WNBA in April, ultimately came up short in a single-point loss to the Sparks on Thursday, but Bueckers' impressive stat sheet made her the first player since 1968 to score 40 or more points in an NCAA Tournament game and a WNBA game in the same year. Bueckers has had a whirlwind year since winning the NCAA championship in April. In addition to multiple campaigns with brands like Coach and Madison Reed, she's furthering her campaign for the WNBA's rookie of the year title since making the league's All-Star team in July. On top of all of that, Bueckers recently revealed she's dating her former Huskies teammate Azzi Fudd. Speaking to PEOPLE in Indianapolis last month, she joked she "got set up" into revealing the relationship. "That was just a setup," she joked, with a grin. "I didn't even mean for that to happen, and here we are." Read the original article on People

Tank Davis' obvious money grab against Jake Paul is shameful

Tank Davis has one goal when he steps in the ring Nov. 15 for the fight against Jake Paul that was announced Wednesday: make a lot of money. Winning is optional. Why else would Davis avoid scheduling the rematch against Lamont Roach that was speculated to have a date before Davis was arrested in July to instead fight an exhibition... against Jake Paul!? In going this route, the WBA lightweight champ isn't just ducking Roach. He's also avoiding other more desirable fights like a unification bout against WBC lightweight champ Shakur Stevenson… or literally any other top contender who fans have been clamoring to see him put his 30-0-1 record on the line against. Instead of picking the best fight, the 30-year-old went with the biggest money grab possible. Congratulations, Netflix. You did it again. We really gotta stop feeding the ducks bread. This is a new low for a boxer who's seen plenty away from the ring over the years. But at least Davis has been honest about who he is; someone who always prioritized the money. In fact, we probably all should have seen this coming like Stevenson did. That same honesty can't be attributed to Paul, who insists he wants to be a champion but then does these spectacles that say otherwise against non-boxers, retired legends and now a boxer who's seven weight classes smaller. That weight disparity is why this fight can't be sanctioned. So, yeah, it's as much a money grab for Paul as it is Davis, though he'll try to convince you it's equally about his desire to conquer the sport. If that was the case, it wouldn't be so hard for the rest of us who enjoy boxing to tell. By the way, no one expects the weight discrepancy to stop a seasoned undefeated fighter like Davis from giving Paul a really hard time. Which is another reason this fight is no good. If Paul loses, he was supposed to. If he wins, it was the money grab we all thought it was. But hey, if you're Tank Davis, why step in a ring with better boxers to cement your legacy as the best of your era when you can make millions of dollars more getting tagged by a content creator? Paige Bueckers ties the WNBA rookie scoring record With 44 points against the Los Angeles Sparks last night, Paige Bueckers tied Cynthia Cooper for the most points in a single game by a rookie in WNBA history. Somehow, the Wings still found a way to lose, giving up a floater to Kelsey Plum at the buzzer, but Bueckers did her part and had Plum dropping F-bombs after the game. The future is bright in Dallas. From NFL to WNBA: Kristin Juszczyk's Off Season brand branches into women's sports

Fashion designer Kristin Juszczyk first noticed the limited options in women's sports apparel back in 2020 when she was looking for something to wear to cheer on her All-Pro fullback husband Kyle Juszczyk and the San Francisco 49ers. When she couldn't find a game-day look that successfully merged fashion and fandom, Juszczyk took matters into her own hands and taught herself how to sew by watching YouTube. Little did Juszczyk know her upcycled creations, like the viral Travis Kelce-themed puffer jacket handmade for Taylor Swift, would redefine sports merchandise and shine a light on a massive 'gap in the industry.' Juszczyk launched the sports apparel company Off Season alongside business partner Emma Grede in January, offering elevated merchandise that could become a staple on game day and beyond. After dropping an NFL ready-to-wear collection last month, it was only a matter of time before Juszczyk and Grede set their sights on the WNBA and women's sports. 'We're so excited to branch out to the WNBA, because women's sports is just the ultimate movement,' Juszczyk told USA TODAY Sports. 'Knowing how much my husband puts into his work every single day, I know how much these girls live, breathe and eat the sport. And to see the whole world give them the recognition that they deserve has just been so amazing … For us to have a little blip in the WNBA story is just such an honor.' Off Season's expansion into the WNBA has been a 'natural evolution' for the brand, according to Juszczyk, who's the 'biggest fan' of the league's culture and community. She has her good friend Claire Kittle, who played basketball at the University of Iowa, to thank for that. Kittle, 49ers tight end George Kittle's wife, introduced Juszczyk to Hawkeye basketball. She became a Caitlin Clark and the rest, as they say, is history. 'It was the natural progression of … seeing Caitlin go from NCAA to WNBA and seeing how much the league as a whole has just skyrocketed has been so fun to watch,' Juszczyk said. 'We knew that we wanted to bring (Off Season) to more female customers.' USA TODAY Sports caught up with Juszczyk and Grede on their WNBA Collection, the inspiration behind their favorite pieces and how the trailblazing partnership came to be: Introducing the WNBA Collection Off Season's WNBA Collection will launch with apparel for four teams — the Golden State Valkyries, Indiana Fever, Las Vegas Aces and defending champion New York Liberty — in addition to league merch. Juszczyk and Grede said they have plans to create merchandise for all 13 WNBA teams, but want to start by 'taking baby steps' as they continue to scale their startup business. 'We've just scratched the surface,' said Grede, the CEO and co-founder of Good American and founding partner of Skims. The line will feature Juszczyk's signature style of graphic prints, layered fabrics, distinct embroidery and different textures, plus an added sporty flair. 'What's so important for us is to have a standard to Off Season too, that no matter what league we're at, people know right away that's an Off Season piece,' Juszczyk said. 'We also wanted to bring the sporty element into it, like the oversized sleeves, the button up, the collars, the cargo shorts … while also having the authenticity of Off Season.' When asked who Juszczyk would like to see in Off Season's WNBA Collection, she responded without hesitation: "I would love to dress (Dallas Wings guard) Paige (Bueckers). She's just amazing. She's so fun to watch ... She also has amazing style. I love seeing what she comes out for game days.' WNBA hoodie inspired bye Kobe Bryant Juszczyk said her favorite piece in the collection is a WNBA logo hoodie inspired by late Los Angeles Lakers Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant, who was an advocate for women's sports as the father of four daughters. "There was such an iconic moment where Kobe (Bryant) wore that orange WNBA sweatshirt," Juszczyk said, referring to Bryant and his daughter Gianna attending a Lakers game in late December 2019, the duo's last public appearance before their death in January 2020. "We took that as a reference.' The unisex WNBA logo hoodie showcases the silhouette surrounded with a spray painted, graffiti border on the back. 'We really had a lot of fun with the WNBA graphic to give it a little twist, but at the same time keep the authenticity of the WNBA logo,' she said. The front of the sweater features an additional WNBA logo in orange. Off Season started with a DM The partnership between Juszczyk and Grede started like many relationships do in this day and age — social media. Juszczyk slid into Grede's Instagram messages because 'I had these designs in front of me, but I've never built a business before in my life.' Grede has built her career on anticipating consumer needs and was instantly sold on the idea of forging a new lane in sports apparel. 'There is so much merch out there, but there's nothing that I want to wear,' Grede told USA TODAY Sports. 'We're designing for ourselves, we're designing for our friends, for our community of followers. And I think there is just such a need for fashion forward stuff in this space. … I think that everybody just wants to represent their teams and to look good and to feel good. And what we're doing feels so fresh.' Juszczyk will no longer make every piece by scratch — "which my fingers are very happy for," she joked — but she said the quality won't be compromised. "My goal for Off Season is that it will be that vintage piece in your closet," Juszczyk said. Kristin Juszczyk's game-day videos will continue Juszczyk may have her hands full running her brand, but her signature game-day videos aren't going anywhere. Juszczyk said she'll 'definitely' continue sharing her looks across her social media channels, where she boasts nearly 1.5 million followers. Grede added Juszczyk's posts are 'imperative for our brand." 'It's almost like we get to test the market,' Juszczyk said. 'We put stuff out there and whatever has the most engagement or people are like, 'I want this.' Great, we'll add it to the 2026 (collection). So it's been really fun to just play around. And also for me, I get to add all the extra details I want.' When asked if we'll see a game-day look at Super Bowl LX — which will be hosted at the 49ers' Levi's Stadium, where Kyle Juszczyk is set to begin his 13th season in the league — Juszczyk laughed and said, 'Fingers crossed... that's the wish.'
