‘Operation U-Turn' Cuts Road Deaths by 62.5% in Nagpur
2
Nagpur: In a major boost to road safety, Nagpur Police's recently launched 'Operation U-Turn' has led to a dramatic 62.5% drop in road accident deaths in July 2025 compared to the same month last year.
The operation, aimed primarily at curbing drunk driving and other dangerous road behaviours, was launched on July 10 and has been active for just 21 days.
Under the leadership of CP Ravinder Singal and DCP (Traffic) Lohit Matani, more than 2,500 motorists and bikers were pulled up during late evening drives. Police said the targeted enforcement, especially between 6pm and midnight, proved critical in cutting down both fatalities and serious injuries on city roads.
According to data compiled by the traffic branch's accident cell, fatal accidents dropped from 40 in July 2024 to 15 this year, while the number of serious injuries reduced from 13 to just 2 — an 84.6% reduction. Senior officials said the most significant factor behind the fall was the crackdown on drunken driving, along with enforcement of helmet rules and action against wrong-side driving.
"Checkpoints were set up across the city to monitor violations, especially in high-risk areas and during peak accident hours," said CP Singal.
"Heavy fines and legal action were taken against offenders. But Operation U-Turn is not just about enforcement — it's about building a culture of road safety. The encouraging results also reflect citizen cooperation."
Jt CP Navinchandra Reddy, who is also overseeing the drive, added that "data-driven policing and focused enforcement" were the keys to success. "Community engagement also played a big role," he said.
To complement enforcement, the police also conducted public awareness campaigns, including outreach programmes to educate citizens on the importance of wearing helmets, obeying signals, and not driving under the influence.
Launched as a response to the city's growing accident toll, the drive is now being seen as a model for targeted road safety campaigns. Nagpur Police said it plans to sustain the momentum by expanding the operation and introducing AI-based traffic monitoring systems to improve surveillance and compliance.
"Dangerous driving behaviours won't be tolerated, and we'll continue to take strict action," said DCP Matani, adding that efforts would continue until road deaths are significantly reduced.

Police safety net for lonely senior citizens, elderly couples
Nagpur: The city police's specialised unit for family grievance redressal, Bharosa Cell, continues to strengthen its Senior Citizen Assistance Scheme, safeguarding 221 senior citizens living alone and 1,703 elderly couples under its vigilant watch. In 2025, the Bharosa Cell has made 5,512 calls to seniors — 1,254 to those living alone and 4,258 to those with families. Also, by resolving 45 out of 48 in-person complaints, with 36 settled amicably, the scheme has demonstrated its ability to address concerns ranging from safety issues to emotional support. The Bharosa Cell has intensified its efforts to provide a robust safety net for the elderly. Though launched two decades ago, the initiative gained traction in recent years under the leadership of CP Ravinder Singal, addressing the rising concerns over attacks on vulnerable seniors. Senior inspector Seema Surve, who leads the cell, highlighted the proactive measures in place. "Our all-women five Damini squad conducts regular visits to seniors' homes, offering not just security checks but also counselling to combat loneliness and ensure their immediate needs are catered to," she said. The cell also makes daily calls to 50 seniors to inquire about their well-being. The Bharosa Cell encourages seniors and their families to register for the scheme at the nearest police station or via a convenient QR code system available at stations and senior citizen organisations. For those unable to visit, officers conduct home visits. "Nagpur police's Senior Citizen Assistance Scheme has become a lifeline for the city's elderly, blending regular check-ins, home visits, and swift grievance redressal to create a secure and compassionate environment," said Surve, adding Jt CP Navinchandra Reddy, Addl CP Vasant Pardeshi, and DCP Rahul Maknikar take periodic reviews of the functioning and also make surprise visits to the unit. Too many cooks spoil the broth?
1 2 Nagpur: Three Special Investigation Teams (SITs) have been set up in a three-month span to probe the Shalarth ID and education scam — a massive fraud involving fraudulent teacher appointments and salary disbursements worth crores — with the latest one by the education department with Pune divisional commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar at the helm. While the move signals intent to address the scandal, experts warn the formation of multiple SITs could lead to overlapping commands, confusion, and inefficiencies, potentially undermining the investigation's effectiveness. "Too many cooks spoil the broth," said an official privy to the probe. Shalarth ID drafts or unique web-based teacher identification number of 4,000 teachers were earlier collated by cyber cell personnel, which included hundreds of fake ones generated by hacking computer systems at the office of deputy director of education. The third SIT was formed after one of the two cases registered by Nagpur police were already chargesheeted. Around 29 accused have walked out on bail and only five remain in prison from two cases with Nagpur Police. Several others are out on anticipatory bail. The timing of the third SIT is questionable, said legal experts. The first SIT, formed by Nagpur CP Ravinder Singal in May this year, focused on the two Nagpur-specific cases registered at Sadar and Cyber police station. The second, formed by the Maharashtra govt, has a broader statewide mandate but also covers Nagpur. The third SIT, chaired by Pune divisional commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar, oversees Nagpur and other districts and has the mandate to formulate recommendations and plug the recruitment and salary disbursal systems around which the scam revolves. This overlap in jurisdiction, particularly in Nagpur, raises concerns about duplication of efforts, with teams potentially re-interviewing witnesses or re-examining evidence, wasting critical time and resources. The lack of a clear hierarchy among the SITs is a big issue. With different officials reporting to different authorities, decision-making could become inconsistent, and supervisory ambiguity may allow chaos to go unchecked. Each SIT brings specialized expertise, with officers from police and administrative backgrounds. To avoid chaos, experts recommend a unified command structure, with one SIT coordinating the others. "A centralized database for evidence and regular coordination meetings are critical to align strategies," said an official. For instance, it remains unclear whether Pulkundwar's team, led by a senior official, supersedes the others or operates in parallel, creating risks of conflicting strategies or missed leads. Coordination challenges are another concern. Without a centralized system for sharing evidence and updates, the SITs risk working in silos, leading to chaos in evidence collection and case management. The scam's scale — thousands of fraudulent appointments across districts — demands seamless collaboration, which could be hampered by unclear divisions of responsibility. However, the govt's intent to tackle the scam comprehensively is evident, said a senior cop. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
