Martin Zubimendi makes bizarre claim after turning down £51m Liverpool transfer - 'the best decision'

Yahoo5 days ago
Martin Zubimendi has explained why he controversially u-turned on his decision to sign for Liverpool last summer. Zubimendi, who had helped Spain win Euro 2024 the previous month, verbally agreed a move to Anfield with the Reds prepared to trigger his £51million release clause until the player backtracked and instead opted to stay at Real Sociedad.
While Liverpool were understandably displeased at the change of heart, they opted not to reinforce their midfield options and went on to dominate the Premier League under new boss Arne Slot and claim a record-equalling 20th championship.
Zubimendi has subsequently signed for last season's leading Premier League also-ran Arsenal for £56m during the ongoing transfer window, and has reflected on rejecting the opportunity to move to Liverpool.

'It wasn't an easy time,' he says. 'I wanted to stay at La Real, but when offers come in, you start thinking about your options.
"The first question I had to answer was whether I wanted to leave - and it wasn't the right time. I felt La Real offered me more opportunities and that I still had a lot to learn, so staying was the best decision.'
Of moving to Arsenal, Zubimendi added: "It's a different change for me. It's the change I wanted. Since the first day I've been here, I've noticed the greatness of this club, and I'm adapting.'
Zubimendi has run the risk of further irking Liverpool supporters with comments about Arsenal's lack of success last season.
As well as finishing a whopping 10 points behind the Reds in the Premier League, the Gunners were beaten 3-1 on aggregate in the Champions League semi-final to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.
And Zubimendi believes Arsenal were the only team to properly threaten PSG, despite Liverpool having succumbed to the French side on penalties in the round of 16 having won in France.
Speaking during Arsenal's pre-season tour in Singapore, the Spaniard said: 'The most important thing about this club is that they learn from previous seasons.
'The lessons they've learned from how last season ended will be key to getting even closer to this year's targets.
'Football comes down to details, especially in the Champions League.
'Arsenal were the only team who truly stood up to Paris Saint-Germain and they let it slip because of minor details.'

Tottenham vs Newcastle: Friendly prediction, kick-off time, TV, live stream, team news, h2h results, odds

Tottenham's pre-season campaign continues when they take on Newcastle United on Sunday. Thomas Frank's side surprised Arsenal with a 1-0 victory over their north London rivals in Hong Kong. Pape Matar Sarr's stunner was the difference between the two sides in a game that saw Mikel Arteta hand debuts to Viktor Gyokeres and Cristhian Mosquera off the bench. As for Spurs, Frank has only one new signing available to him so far - Mohammed Kudus - who put in another solid showing after his move from West Ham. Newcastle, meanwhile, have bigger problems at home, with Alexander Isak training alone at his former club Real Sociedad as he looks to force through a move to Liverpool. That leaves the north-eastern outfit eyeing up a new striker, and Newcastle are set to rival Manchester United for Benjamin Sesko, the RB Leipzig forward. They also hold an interest in wantaway Brentford man Yoanne Wissa. Date, kick-off time and venue Tottenham vs Newcastle is scheduled for a 12pm BST kick-off on Sunday, August 3, 2025. The game will take place at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in Seoul, South Korea. How to watch Tottenham vs Newcastle TV channel: In the UK, the game will not be televised. Live stream: You can stream the match online via either club's official site. Spurs have SPURSPLAY, where an annual subscription is £45. Newcastle have NUFC TV, where you can buy a match pass to watch the game. Live blog: You can also follow all the action with Standard Sport's live blog! Tottenham vs Newcastle team news Frank's main injury headaches at the moment are around Dominic Solanke and Destiny Udogie, his first-choice striker and left-back. Neither featured against Arsenal, with ankle and knee injuries the issues with both respective players. James Maddison returned to the bench against Arsenal, but new centre-back Kota Takai will still be out for weeks with a plantar fascia problem. As for Newcastle, besides Isak, they are almost at full complement. They are lacking go-to left-back Lewis Hall, who is out with an ankle injury, and Sven Botman's groin played up in the defeat to Arsenal. He didn't feature against the J-League XI, where Joe Willock hobbled off. Tottenham vs Newcastle prediction Two teams that both feel a little undercooked as the season begins to creep up on them. Both seriously need to bolster their squads with more signings, and both their managers have emphasised the importance of doing so before the window slams shut. The pair have missed out on key targets this summer already, and it is imperative that they get some business done before the campaign commences. As for this game, Spurs will be buoyed by that win over Arsenal, where, on paper, they looked the weaker side. Newcastle have had a pretty torrid time of it in their preparations for the new term results-wise, and they could struggle again here. Viktor Gyokeres ruthlessly mocked after nightmare Arsenal debut

Former Manchester United target, Viktor Gyokeres, endured a debut to forget for his new side Arsenal. Gyokeres chase The Red Devils were very keen on bringing in the Swedish striker this summer as he used to work with United manager Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP. Moreover, he was in lethal form last season, bagging 54 goals in all competitions. It has also been reported that the player heavily favoured a move to Arsenal over a reunion with Amorim, which supporters of the Gunners have naturally lapped up. Debut from hell Nonetheless, it was supporters of other teams that drew the first laugh as the Sweden international contributed virtually nothing in a 0-1 pre-season defeat to fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur. In 14 minutes of action, he managed 0 shots on goal and 0 dribble attempts. He could also only manage two passes in the entire time he was on the field, failing to connect with his teammates in any meaningful way. The striker also didn't manage to get involved in any ground or aerial duels as he caused the Spurs' defence little to no problem during his brief stint on the pitch. Social media joy Football fandom is full of banter, especially in the social media age and it was awash with memes and mockery. X account Hater Central mocked his performance by stating, he must be 100% constipated after a line of 0s in his real statistics. Footy Humour also posted on X, 'welcome to the 001 club' mocking his lack of goals and Arsenal's inability to win trophies in recent years. Another X account, Troll Football, also mockingly compared Gyokeres' effort to United's Rasmus Hojlund. They posted 'Gyokeres against a team that was battling relegation last season' and 'Hojlund against a team that was battling for Europe last season.' New striker pursuit After missing out on Gyokeres, United have turned their attention to Benjamin Sesko and it has been reported that the club are prepared to make an official move for the striker. As fate would have it, United will face Gyokeres at Old Trafford on Sunday 17th August on the opening day of the season. Supporters will hope he has a similar impact on the game as he did on his debut. Featured image Gualter Fatia via Getty Images online polls Follow us on Bluesky: @
