Taiwan plans AI projects to boost economy
Premier Cho Jung-tai said in a Facebook post late on Tuesday that Taiwan aims to leverage its information and communications technology (ICT) sector and world-leading semiconductor manufacturing capabilities to become a global AI influencer and a "smart technology island".
Under the initiative, Taiwan has identified three core technologies as strategic priorities: silicon photonics, quantum technology and AI robotics.
Silicon photonics is a technology that Taiwan's TSMC , the world's largest contract chipmaker, and many other firms in the industry are actively developing.
The government aims to position Taiwan as a global leader in silicon photonics by aligning the sector with future AI development needs.
Taiwan also hopes to become a key hub for AI robotics by tapping its hardware and ICT supply chains.
Industry groups, including one led by Foxconn chairman Young Liu, have backed the move with the formation of the Taiwan AI Robotics Industry Grand Alliance on Tuesday to support the local development of AI robotics and related ecosystems.
The 10 projects also include the development of sovereign AI — ability to build and control domestic AI technologies — and computing infrastructure, efforts to balance AI development across different regions of the island and the introduction of AI across a wide range of industries.
The initiative targets the creation of 500,000 jobs and the establishment of three international-level research laboratories. — REUTERS

Loke: Taxi drivers to get language, etiquette training for VM2026
KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry plans to introduce basic language and driver etiquette training for taxi drivers ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), said its Minister, Anthony Loke Siew Fook. Loke said the initiative is crucial as the taxi industry is not merely about transportation, but also represents the heartbeat of public service and often forms tourists' first impression of the country. He added that the government has also increased its contribution incentive to the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) from 10 per cent to 30 per cent to safeguard the safety and welfare of taxi drivers. "These reforms are ongoing, and I will continue working with this industry to strengthen the public transport sector for the benefit of the people," he said in a Facebook post. Earlier, Loke officiated the third annual general meeting of the Malaysia Taxi, Rental Car, Limousine and Airport Taxi Association (GTSM), which provided him an opportunity to hear directly from industry players. As Transport Minister, he said meaningful reforms in the sector could only be achieved through close collaboration with stakeholders such as GTSM.

KPDN to enhance royalty management for musicians and artistes
KOTA KINABALU: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) is taking steps to strengthen the royalty management framework for musicians and artistes in Malaysia. The initiative aims to safeguard their earnings from artistic works through improved governance and transparency. Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, the minister overseeing KPDN, highlighted the introduction of Guidelines for Collective Management Organisations (CMOs) under Section 27M of the Copyright Act 1987. These guidelines, enforced by the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), focus on advocacy, compliance, and fair royalty distribution. 'My goal is to ensure the rights of all parties, especially artistes and musicians, are protected and upheld,' Armizan said in a Facebook post. 'Too many end up struggling later in life, and the government must not be seen as neglecting its responsibility to establish a clear and comprehensive legal framework.' MyIPO holds the authority to issue operational guidelines to registered CMOs, which manage royalty rights on behalf of copyright holders. However, Armizan noted that a small group has filed for judicial review, naming KPDN, MyIPO, and the minister as respondents. Despite legal challenges, Armizan remains committed to ensuring musicians and artistes receive long-term income from their works. 'As the current minister, I bear the responsibility to ensure they continue earning income not only throughout their careers but also for as long as others use their work,' he said. – Bernama
