Troy Parrott on target in Dutch Cup final but AZ Alkmaar suffer agonising loss
The Dubliner had given Alkmaar the lead from the penalty spot on the 54th minute - albeit only after a stroke of fortune. His initial penalty effort was saved but was offered a second chance after a VAR review determined that Eagles defender Mathis Suray had encroached in the penalty area too early before clearing the rebound.
Parrott made no mistake on the second attempt, sending the keeper the wrong way.
He was forced off with injury shortly afterwards but his strike appeared to have settled the contest until deep in injury time, when the Eagles were awarded a 99th minute penalty, converted by captain Mats Deijl.
After a goalless extra-time period, there was agony for Alkmaar in the shootout as misses from Zico Burmeester and Mayckel Lahdo saw the Eagles claim their first ever Cup victory.

AZ Alkmaar manager Maarten Martens has attempted to shut down any suggestion that Troy Parrott could be on the move before the end of the summer transfer window. The Ireland striker has been in blistering form so far this season, scoring nine goals in his first six matches, both in the Eredivisie and in Europe. Sunday's strike against FC Volendam means he has now scored in all six competitive appearances to date in the 2025/26 campaign. By mid-August, the Dubliner has almost reached the halfway mark of his previous season best, which came last season when he found the net 20 times for AZ. Parrott has been linked with a number of clubs, including Premier League pair Leeds United and Wolves, while his form has also caught the eye of some of Alkmaar's more illustrious Dutch rivals. PSV Eindhoven are on the lookout for urgent striker reinforcements after an injury to Alassane Plea at the weekend. Martens was asked by TV station NOS after Sunday's 2-2 draw with Volendam if Parrott and fellow striker Mexx Meerdink would still be at the club after the window shuts at the end of the month. He issued a short and snappy response, indicating that he has no plans to off-load either of his forwards. 'We want to keep them both, and that's going to happen,' he said. Parrott's career has caught fire since his move to the Netherlands, initially on a loan deal to Excelsior from Tottenham during the 2023/24 season. His 17 goals in 32 appearances convinced AZ to fork out €8million to sign him permanently from the Premier League side - a fee that has quickly turned out to be a bargain. The 23-year-old hit the 20-goal mark for the first time in his career last season, a tally that included four goals in Europe. Prior to his move to the Netherlands, Parrott struggled with loans to Millwall (14 appearances/0 goals), Ipswich (18/2), and Preston (34/4). He hit double figures for the first time when, in 2021/22, he moved to League One side MK Dons and scored 10 times in 47 games. But since his arrival on the continent, the 29-time capped Ireland striker has been in breathtaking form, leading to speculation that AZ boss Martens was forced at the weekend to bat away. Boxing chief ready to talk if Kellie Harrington wants back in the ring
Irish boxing's High Performance chief Jon Mackey will sit down with Kellie Harrington at the year's end to discuss what plans, if any, the two-time Olympic champion has when it comes to the ring. Harrington announced her retirement after retaining her lightweight title in Paris last summer, but the Dubliner is still training in Irish boxing's elite training centre at the Sports Ireland Campus in Abbotstown. The multiple major medallist, who had suggested she might fight domestically post-Olympics, was announced as part of the High Performance team in January, after which she insisted there were no plans to target LA in 2028 or a shot at the pros. 'Kellie always has a plan. Any questions around Kelly not retiring from boxing are questions for Kellie. What I can say is that she's training away. She's on an individualised training programme for her on the back of Paris. She's still active. 'She's still very much part of what we do in the high-performance unit. I've no doubt Kellie will be watching the World Championships and willing everybody on and wishing everybody the best, including the 60-kilo boxer Zara Breslin, who was selected for this year. 'And we'll have a conversation with Kellie towards the end of the year to see what next year looks like. At the moment, I'm not sure, other than to say I'm happy to see her continuously and consistently training and keeping herself in good spirits.' Mackey explained how, as is par for the course, Harrington is supported by Sport Ireland and the boxing federation for 12 months as she 'tapers' down post-Games. This allows her to work with former teammates and engage with the coaching teams. Harrington has sparred with boxers who will step into the ring in Liverpool between September 4-14 for what is the first senior global competition organised by the nascent World Boxing federation and not the International Boxing Association (IBA). 'We've been really focused on Liverpool and Kelly knows this,' said Mackey. 'If she has any ambition to box again next year, we'll have those conversations with her in October or November this year, I'm sure.' Over 550 boxers from 65 countries will compete in England, 17 of them Olympic medallists from Paris 2024. The Ireland team is currently in Sheffield at a multi-nation training camp with the likes of the UK, USA, India, Germany and Kazakhstan. Though a youthful collection it will have elite experience with the likes of Jack Marley, Michaela Walsh, Daina Moorhouse, Dean Clancy and Jenny Lehane all bringing Olympic experience to the M&S Bank Arena.

Despite still only being 24, he's already moved around a lot. Advertisement After starting at Stoke City, who he also skippered at 18, he joined Burnley followed by Wolves for one campaign apiece before seeming to find a more long-term home in London. His moves to Wolves and Brentford each set a new Irish transfer fee record so it's not like he's been a cast-off at any of his previous clubs. But joining any of the mooted three he's being linked with at the moment would represent a further step up in class. One thing in depleted Brentford's favour is that he's only two years into a six-year deal so they are in a strong bargaining position.
