Zawya01-07-2025
The group is the first serviced apartment operator in Europe to join the programme, which has more members per room than any other loyalty scheme in the sector.
GHA Discovery has in excess of 30 million members around the world and offers members the flexibility to redeem earnings against more than 850 high-end properties.
Cheval Collection Managing Director Mohammed Alawadhi said: 'Loyalty programmes have become an essential part of every guest stay and GHA Discovery offers the opportunity to recognise and reward our loyal Cheval customers, many of whom are repeat visitors to our properties around the world.
'GHA Discovery has a proven track record and, with its focus on luxury brands, is an appropriate fit for us at Cheval Collection.'
Nick Pilbeam, Chief Commercial Officer, Cheval Collection, said: 'GHA Discovery is the world's largest alliance of luxury hotels, offering VIP recognition for loyal guests and encouraging direct bookings, in addition to providing marketing support, access to new markets and 30 million new customers.
'The programme will also deliver additional guest feedback, helping us to hone our offering as we expand globally.'
GHA is the world's largest alliance of independent hotels and residence brands, with key shareholders including Kempinski, Minor Hotels, Pan Pacific Hotels & Resorts and Corinthia Hotels.
The programme is free for guests to join and, under it, members collect Discovery Dollars equal to 4% of their transaction, which they can redeem against future stays at any participating member property.
Other rewards across the four tiers of membership include a discount of at least 10% or more on best available rates, free wifi and members-only local offers, events and experiences.
The launch came as Cheval Collection continued to sign deals across EMEA. The opening of the Cheval Maison – Expo City Dubai in March took Cheval Collection to over 950 units, after adding more than 300 since opening its Lexham Gardens by Cheval Maison property in London in 2021.
Early 2026 will see the opening of the Cheval Maison West Regent Glasgow, with the group also due to make its debut in Saudi Arabia in 2027, with Cheval Ladun Living, located in Riyadh.

The UK is back in business. Someone forgot to tell British investors

Britain's stock market is outperforming Wall Street in 2025, and the UK economy has enjoyed the fastest growth of any G7 country during the first half of the year. Yet British investors are mostly missing out while foreign buyers are reaping the benefits. The UK stock market has been plagued by sluggish performance and a dearth of IPOs for so long that any good news has a tendency to travel quickly among the local investor community. Last week, I received several emails about a study from Schroders showing that US investors were moving more money into UK stocks than anywhere else. Indeed, after withdrawing almost $100 billion from the UK between 2020 and 2022, the last three years have seen persistent inflows from Americans. Unfortunately, this optimism about UK stocks doesn't appear to be shared by UK investors. According to the Investment Association, a UK trade body, retail investors have sold more than £50 billion ($68 billion) in UK equity funds over the last five years while buying more than £25 billion ($34 billion) in international equity funds. And unlike American investors, the domestic crowd has not warmed to UK stocks in the last three years. Brits' pessimism regarding their own country is by no means a new phenomenon, particularly if we use consumer sentiment as a gauge. While it has been negative on average for over 40 years, consumers have become much more pessimistic since the end of the financial crisis in 2009. This national gloom has affected both institutional and retail investors. In 1997, UK pension funds on average invested 53% of their assets in UK stocks. By 2022, that had dropped to 6%, according to a study by the think tank New Financial. Perhaps then it shouldn't be surprising that the UK economy is doing well not because of the British but despite them. In the first half of 2025, the UK was the fastest-growing G7 country, recording a 2.2% annualised GDP expansion, compared to 1.2% for the U.S. and 1.4% for the euro zone. But the UK's surprisingly strong economic activity in the first six months of 2025 came despite lacklustre annualised household consumption growth of 0.9% and a so-so business investment expansion of 1.7%. The main driver of GDP strength was a 20% annualised drop in the UK's trade deficit as foreigners bought more UK goods and services. Welcome surprise Another group that seems to be oblivious to the recovery in the UK economy and stock market is UK analysts. During the Q2 2025 earnings season, FTSE 350 companies have beaten earnings expectations by 16.5% on average, while stocks in the S&P 500 beat expectations by 8.3%. Given that roughly an 8% earnings beat is now expected in the U.S., share prices during the current earnings season have actually dropped by an average of 0.9% in the week after earnings releases. Meanwhile, in the UK, share prices have rallied by an average of 1.1% in the week after results, suggesting that investors have been pleasantly surprised by UK companies' robust earnings. Excessive pesimism Whinging is a national sport in the UK, but the degree of pessimism espoused by UK investors has arguably become excessive. And if I, a German, think that the British have become too pessimistic that means something. Ultimately, the UK economy appears to be doing just fine, and most leading indicators point to a continued recovery of GDP growth in the second half of this year. True, inflation has proven sticky, coming in at 3.8% in July, the highest level among wealthy countries, but the jump last month was largely driven by volatile transportation costs. There is also some softness in domestic services demand, and uncertainty surrounding possible tax hikes in autumn is weighing on investment slightly, but these factors are unlikely to derail the longer-term economic recovery. Meanwhile, international businesses are coming back to the UK markets. French media giant Canal+ listed in London last year, Greek energy company Metlen did so in August, and both Norwegian software company Visma and Italian food producer Newlat are expected to hold their IPOs in London. Investors and businesses around the world seem to realise that the UK's outlook is persistently improving. Now, if somebody could please tell this to the British, I would be much obliged. UK remains Western Islamic finance hub despite limited local uptake

Fitch Ratings-Dubai/Jakarta: The UK will continue as the leading Western hub for Islamic finance, supported by the London Stock Exchange (LSE) serving as a key listing venue for global US dollar sukuk, and the use of English law in governing most international sukuk, Fitch Ratings says. Moreover, the London Metal Exchange is accessed by many Islamic banks to facilitate cash financing. The UK's financial, professional and legal services, and human capital support the global Islamic finance industry, with UK banks being key arrangers and counterparties in sukuk, Islamic interbank and derivatives markets. Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) investors are major shareholders in all UK Islamic banks. However, the share of Islamic banking in the UK remains low. The LSE provides issuers with access to a deep, diverse international investor base, and is the largest listing venue globally for hard-currency sukuk with over a 40% share as of end-1H25, based on Bloomberg data. It is also the second-largest listing venue for hard-currency ESG sukuk globally after Frankfurt Stock Exchange. Nearly all sukuk listed on the LSE originate from GCC countries. Middle Eastern sukuk and bond issuers raised USD65 billion on the LSE in the first seven months of 2025, ranking second behind UK issuers. However, the LSE faces stiff competition for sukuk listing leadership from Euronext Dublin, Frankfurt Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Dubai. Fitch rates about 80% of hard-currency sukuk listed on the LSE as of end-1H25, with about 85% investment grade and most issuers assigned a Stable Outlook. UK-based Islamic funds are the largest contributors to the domestic Islamic finance industry, with assets under management of over USD12.5 billion as of end-June 2025, up 22.1% year on year, based on IFN Investor data. Most of these funds invest in equities (84%), followed by commodities (10%). UK Islamic banking assets rose by 38% year on year to USD11.4 billion at end-2024. The UK gained an additional Islamic bank in 2024, through the conversion of Ahli United Bank (UK) PLC to Kuwait Finance House PLC. Fitch rates two Islamic banks in the UK, both at 'A' with Stable Outlooks. All UK Islamic banks have GCC shareholders, supporting government efforts to attract foreign direct investment. These banks mainly serve GCC clients and offer real estate finance, private banking, wealth management and digital banking products. The UK has over 50 Islamic fintech firms, including a digital Islamic bank. Europe Arab Bank launched Islamic banking services in May 2025, while fintech company Offa acquired Bank of Ireland's Islamic home finance portfolio in late 2024. However, Islamic banks account for just 0.1% of UK banking assets as of 3Q24. Key obstacles include a lack of understanding, limited product options, higher fees than conventional products, and the perception that Islamic finance is only for Muslims, according to a Gatehouse Bank survey, along with the UK's minority Muslim population. The UK Treasury began consulting on Phase 1 of the Consumer Credit Act Reform in May 2025. The government intends to assess barriers hindering firms' provision of sharia-compliant finance and consider measures to address unmet needs in Phase 2. This recognises the importance of facilitating access to Islamic finance and fostering greater inclusivity. The government aims to introduce Alternative Student Finance, a sharia-compliant student loan scheme, as soon as possible following the introduction of a more flexible student finance system, the Lifelong Learning Entitlement, from the 2026-2027 academic year. The UK was the first western country to issue sovereign sukuk in 2014 and issued a follow-up in 2021. However, the government does not plan to issue sukuk in 2025-2026. Sukuk from UK-based entities was about USD740 million outstanding in July 2025, with the majority sovereign issuances which mature in 2026.

Dollar drifts as investors ponder Fed independence, await Jackson Hole

SINGAPORE - The U.S. dollar drifted on Thursday as investors awaited policy cues from the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium while keeping an eye on renewed concerns over central bank independence after President Donald Trump's latest salvo. The euro and sterling were flat at $1.1652 and $1.3451, respectively, while the Japanese yen and Swiss franc nursed modest losses. Odds of a rate cut by the Federal Reserve next month eased slightly to 82%, offering mild support to the dollar as focus remained on whether Powell will push back against market expectations for a September cut when he speaks on Friday. There would likely be a greater reaction if Powell were to indicate the Fed could keep rates steady again, than if he leans in the direction of a cut, said Kenneth Broux, head of corporate research for FX and rates at Societe Generale. "The risks are asymmetric. Because it (a cut) is already priced in, the risk is that we go back to 50-50," said Kenneth Broux, head of corporate research for FX and rates at Societe Generale. The reaction to that would be a sell-off in near-tenor U.S. treasuries and a firmer dollar, Broux said. U.S. President Donald Trump's call for Fed Governor Lisa Cook to resign on the basis of allegations made by one of his political allies has meanwhile revived investor concerns over his efforts to gain influence over the central bank. Trump has also repeatedly criticised Powell for being too slow to cut rates, and has called for his resignation while acknowledging that the Fed's unique status prevents him from firing its board members over monetary policy disputes. "It has the potential to raise questions around the Fed's oversight and regulatory functions but it has little to no near-term monetary policy implications," said Prashant Newnaha, senior Asia-Pacific rates strategist at TD Securities. That explained the relatively subdued reaction in the currency markets to the news as the dollar initially dipped before quickly paring losses and nudging higher. Investors expect Trump will replace Powell, whose term ends in May, with a more dovish appointment. Earlier this month, Trump also said he would nominate Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Stephen Miran to serve out the final few months of a vacant Fed seat after Adriana Kugler unexpectedly resigned. The dollar index, which measures the U.S. currency against six other peers, was up 0.1% at 98.337, on course for a 0.4% rise this week. The benchmark U.S. 10-year yield was a touch higher at 4.30%, while the two-year yield, which is more sensitive to the monetary policy, ticked up slightly to 3.756%. Some analysts cautioned that markets could end up being disappointed by Powell's speech on Friday, noting that the impact of Trump's tariffs on inflation remains unclear. Elsewhere, the Norwegian krone rose 0.4% against the dollar and 0.5% against the euro, after data showed that Norway's mainland economy grew at a faster pace than economists had expected in the second quarter. First quarter growth was also revised up. Bearish bets on China's yuan, meanwhile, hit their highest since mid-May, with analysts turning short spurred by mounting concerns over the economy, a Reuters poll showed on Thursday. In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin was down 0.6% at $113,741 while ether fell 1.6% to $4,285.89.
