Construction work on the Megha Budhal-Mahore-Gool Road in Jammu and Kashmir's (J-K) Rajouri is underway at war-footing pace under the supervision of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), officials said on Sunday.Megha Budhal-Mahore-Gool road connects the towns of Budhal, Mahore, and Gool, and is being upgraded to a National Highway double lane specification.BRO Commanding Officer Aditya Sharma said that once completed, the road will reduce the travel time, boost tourism and provide employment opportunities in the area. "This is a 114 km long road with four packages... Work is underway on 50 km of the 114 km to upgrade this road to a National Highway double lane specification. We are making efforts to ensure the construction is completed as soon as possible and as per specification... This will cut the travel time to reach Gool by half, enhance tourism, bring socio-economic changes, produce employment and benefit locals as well... There are a total of four bridges on this road..." he said while speaking to ANI.The crucial Budhal-Mahore-Gul Road serves as a vital link between the districts of Rajouri, Reasi, and Ramban.Meanwhile, in a transformative push to enhance regional connectivity and economic development, the Government of India has fast-tracked work on the strategically significant Rajouri-Thannamandi-Bufliaz-Surankote Road, a part of the Megha Project aimed at linking the Pir Panjal region with the Kashmir Valley via the historic Mughal Road.The project, currently being executed under the supervision of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and handled by TBM Construction Company, is progressing on a war footing. Key infrastructural activities such as blacktopping (BT), road widening, surface clearance, and the construction of protection walls are ongoing across multiple stretches.This vital highway is more than just a road--it is a lifeline for the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch. Once completed, it will serve as a shorter and faster route to the Kashmir Valley, significantly reducing travel time and enhancing emergency accessibility.

Mizoram MP urges BRO to expedite projects, resolve land issues
Aizawl, Aug 13 (PTI) Mizoram's lone Lok Sabha MP Richard Vanlalhmangaiha has urged the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to expedite the ongoing projects and resolve land acquisition issues in the state, an official statement said on Wednesday. During a meeting with BRO Director General Lt. Gen. Raghu Srinivasan in New Delhi on Tuesday, Richard urged him to expedite the construction of roads and other development infrastructures currently being undertaken by the organisation across the state, the statement added. He requested the BRO director general to take steps to ensure that construction of concrete bridges, which has been halted for some time, is resumed, it said. The MP also sought the director general's intervention in resolving the pending land acquisition issues in Lawngtlai, Siaha, and Champhai districts, it said. He urged the BRO chief to immediately release the pending additional compensation amounting to Rs 82 lakh in connection with the ongoing construction of Tipa-Laki-Lope-Lopu (LTTT road) project in the southern part of the state. In response, Srinivasan informed Richard that immediate action will be taken to ensure that the ongoing and upcoming projects are executed, the statement added. He also assured that pending compensation for LTTT road and land acquisition issues in the three districts will be resolved soon. Srinivasan said he would visit Mizoram and personally inspect the ongoing projects, the statement added. Panel flags huge gap in NHAI's sanctioned cost, awarded rate for NH-66
NEW DELHI: The widening of National Highway-66, which suffered major collapses and cracks in Mallapuram, Kannur and Kasargod in recent months, was awarded at 54% of the sanctioned cost, while the stretch between Kadambattukonam and Kazhakuttom was awarded at about 22% of the sanctioned cost, the Public Accounts Committee said in its report tabled in Parliament on Tuesday. (File Image) The committee headed by Congress MP KC Venugopal flagged the huge gap between sanctioned and awarded costs and asked if the projects were being carried out as originally specified in the detailed project report (DPR) and whether subcontracting at lower costs affected the quality and scale of the work. In its report, the parliamentary panel also cited submissions by the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) to underline that most road infrastructure projects were executed by sub-contractors, who might not be accountable under the primary contract framework. The committee stated that this unchecked layering of contractors and subcontractors had led to the diffusion of accountability, as the National Highways Authority of India had limited leverage to enforce quality standards or ensure timely delivery. Among other lacunae, the committee noted that several highway stretches have failed due to the use of high earthen embankments over unstable soil, without reinforced structures or geogrids. It also stated that land acquisition constraints were not adequately reconciled with design feasibility, resulting in unsafe or compromised alignments. The committee noted that recurring deficiencies in national highway construction underscore the NHAI's failure to integrate local technical expertise and site-specific inputs during the DPR and design stages. 'Diverse terrain and environmental sensitivities across India call for routine consultations with the Geological Survey of India (GSI) or the Central Road Research Institute, state-level public works departments, revenue authorities, or district-level engineering officials. Customised designs have to be applied in fragile zones such as waterlogged areas, paddy fields, etc, with adequate consideration of soil stability, drainage needs, and hydrological conditions.' The committee also recommended that a formal mechanism be established to record suggestions from MPs, MLAs, MLCs, urban and rural local bodies, state-level institutions, including disaster management agencies, to be incorporated into DPRs, with written justification provided for any exclusions.

Union cabinet approves schemes, road project worth over Rs 10,000 crore
NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Friday approved a series of schemes and projects, including a Rs 4,200 crore allocation to state governments for the Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE) Scheme, a Rs 4,250 crore special development package for Assam and Tripura, and a Rs 2,157 crore four-lane National Highway project connecting a 46 km stretch between Marakkanam and Puducherry on the Chennai-Nagapattinam NH 332A. Briefing the media after the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the approval of the MERITE scheme, aimed at enhancing the quality, equity, and governance in technical education across all states and Union territories. The scheme aligns with the National Education Policy-2020 (NEP-2020) and focuses on improving technical education standards. Vaishnaw stated that the scheme will benefit 175 state engineering colleges and 100 polytechnics, providing funds to states and UTs to support approximately 7.5 lakh students. The initiative aims to enhance employability skills, boost placement rates, reduce unemployment, and strengthen research and innovation ecosystems. It is also expected to improve quality assurance and governance mechanisms in technical education. In another decision, the Union Cabinet approved a Rs 4,250 crore Central Sector Scheme of Special Development Packages (SDPs) for Assam and Tripura to consolidate peace and accelerate development in targeted regions. This follows historic peace accords signed in recent years with key ethnic and insurgent groups, including the Adivasi groups (2022), Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA)/Dimasa People's Supreme Council (DPSC) (2023), United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) factions (2023), and National Liberation Front of Twipra (NLFT)/All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) (2024). Key allocations under the package include Rs 500 crore for Adivasi-inhabited areas in Assam, Rs 500 crore for the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) region targeting Dimasa communities, Rs 3,000 crore for ULFA-affected areas across Assam, and Rs 250 crore for tribal development in Tripura. The total package is worth Rs 7,250 crore, with the remaining Rs 3,000 crore to be contributed by the Assam government. The Assam components will be implemented over five years (2025–2030), while the Tripura component will span four years (2025–2029).
