STOCKHOLM (AP) — Austria beat France 5-2 for its second win at the ice hockey world championship on Friday.
Austria is fifth in Group A with five points, France remains seventh on one.
Marco Kasper, Vinzenz Rohrer and Ramon Schnetzer each scored for Austria to jump 3-0 up, forcing France to substitute goalie Antoine Keller with Quentin Papillon with 4:30 to go in the first period in Stockholm.

In Herning, Denmark rallied from two goals down to rout newcomer Hungary 8-2 for a second victory at the worlds.
Mikkel Aagaard scored a hat trick.
The win lifted Denmark to fifth in Group B. Hungary is seventh.
The top four teams in each group advance to the playoffs.
Later Friday, Switzerland plays Norway in Herning and Sweden meets Slovenia in Stockholm.

The Tour de France has not long finished, this is the pinnacle of cycling for most people, writes Pete Richards. It is certainly hard to imagine just how fit you need to be to complete it. Luckily you do not need to be anywhere near as fit as Tadej Pogačar, who won this year, to enjoy cycling. Cycling is great to do if you are looking to do more exercise. It will give you more cardiovascular benefit than swimming, build some leg strength and is also non-weight bearing - easier on the joints than running. And it is a skill that we haven't forgotten, it's like riding a bike. Most of us cycled when we were growing up. This was a time of meeting up with friends and having fun and adventures. And this is what exercise should be like when you are grown up; it shouldn't feel like a chore but instead something to look forward to. Most of my rides are with friends, having fun, exploring new roads and the mandatory stop at a cafe for a coffee, and yes, a piece of cake. We are lucky in Taunton as it is so easy to get started again on a bike if it has been a while since you last cycled. We have the canal, running all the way to Bridgwater if you want, although you could just go as far as the tea rooms at Maunsel Lock. If you haven't got a bike then you could hire one from Parrett Trail Bikes in Langport, they even have e-bikes to make it even easier to get started again. There is the added bonus that there is The Bakery cafe right next door so you can have your coffee afterwards. On Your Bike in Taunton is another great place to hire bikes from. There is such a variety of places to cycle around Taunton. The Levels are lovely if you want to avoid the hills. For something hillier then we have the Quantocks, The Blackdown Hills or even Exmoor. And in every direction, there are many bike-friendly cafes - I feel I should be able to write a guide to them. If you want any advice on getting started with cycling, or routes or cafes then get in touch with me. Summer is a perfect time to get back on your bike. Do it on your own or with friends, but get out there, have fun, explore and perhaps treat yourself to a coffee at the end.

Do Chelsea have an attack that can win them the Premier League?
Beefing up the attack has been Chelsea's primary focus of a typically active summer transfer window. At the Club World Cup, it was hard not to conclude they had succeeded. Liam Delap made an immediate impact in the group stage in the United States. Then, mid-tournament acquisition Joao Pedro was sensational in the knockout rounds, scoring twice against former club Fluminense in the semi-final and once more in Chelsea's 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final. Advertisement Nicolas Jackson, who barely featured in the tournament after picking up a ludicrous straight red card against Flamengo, was not missed. Now he may be sold if a suitable offer arrives, with Joao Pedro and Delap trusted to lead Chelsea's attack. Supporting them from the flanks could be Pedro Neto, or fellow new faces Jamie Gittens and Estevao. By next month, head coach Enzo Maresca could also have Alejandro Garnacho and perhaps even Xavi Simons available to him, offsetting the expected departure of Christopher Nkunku. Factoring in the lucrative sale of Noni Madueke to Arsenal, this summer may come to represent an almost total refresh of the attacking options around talisman Cole Palmer. How all these new pieces fit together will provide the most interesting Chelsea subplot of the early weeks and months of the new season. Crystal Palace offered an opening weekend reminder at Stamford Bridge that any shiny collection of attacking talent can be shut down by a good opponent with a well-conceived and well-executed game plan. Broadening out to look at the bigger picture, do Chelsea have an attack that can one day win them the Premier League title again? That is not the expectation this season but rest assured, it is a target in the coming years. The question has hung over Chelsea's squad building pretty much ever since they last lifted the trophy in 2016-17, and the answer has invariably been no, despite a ludicrously long list of high-profile attackers arriving at Stamford Bridge over the past eight years: Alvaro Morata, Olivier Giroud, Christian Pulisic, Gonzalo Higuain, Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Romelu Lukaku, Raheem Sterling, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Joao Felix (twice), Mykhailo Mudryk, Madueke, Jackson, Palmer, Nkunku, Neto, and Jadon Sancho. Fans will be hoping that this summer's signings can succeed where many others have failed, but here is a startling fact: since Diego Costa left Stamford Bridge in 2017, the only Chelsea player to score at least 15 goals from open play in a single Premier League season is Tammy Abraham (2019-20), a Cobham academy graduate who cost the club nothing to acquire. Advertisement Jackson and Palmer are the two players who have come closest (scoring 14 and 13 open-play goals in the league in 2023-24). It is a relatively crude and basic measure of readiness to be champions, but nine of the last 10 Premier League title-winning teams featured at least one player who netted 15 or more times from open play. The only exception to this rule is the 2020-21 season when Manchester City's attack pushed the boundaries of Pep Guardiola's egalitarian ideals. Ilkay Gundogan was the team's leading scorer in the Premier League with 12 open-play goals, followed closely by Sterling (10), Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus (all nine). Maresca got a close look at this particular team while coaching City's elite development squad to the Premier League 2 title in the 2020-21 season. Perhaps that goes some way to explaining his quote from a Club World Cup press conference in July: 'I prefer to have four or five players scoring 10 or 12 goals each than one player scoring 40 goals.' It is worth noting, however, that Guardiola himself has moved away from this particular idea in recent years. Most teams that win the Premier League can boast a prolific individual scorer, whether it is an overwhelming No 9, such as Erling Haaland at City, or an irrepressible winger, such as Mohamed Salah at Liverpool. Does that player exist at Chelsea, either in their current form or in theory? Joao Pedro gave a very good impression of being an elite scorer at the Club World Cup, but that has not been the story of his career. His best return for open-play league goals in a season is 10, in the Championship with Watford in 2022-23. None of his previous clubs regarded him as a pure No 9 and Chelsea expect the 23-year-old to operate across their attacking line. He may explode as a goalscorer in his mid-twenties, or he may blossom into the type of forward Roberto Firmino was for Liverpool: versatile, skilful and an ideal complement to attacking team-mates who shoulder more of the scoring burden. Delap scored 23 open-play goals in 20 games under Maresca in Premier League 2 for Manchester City's under-21s in 2020-21 and was hugely impressive in netting 10 open-play goals at the tip of a limited Ipswich Town side last season, but that is his best return at senior level. With better team-mates and service, he can beat that mark for Chelsea sooner rather than later. Advertisement Reaching the rarefied air of Haaland and Salah's scoring prowess would require a much bigger leap. Palmer has 24 open-play goals for Chelsea in two Premier League seasons. There is ample evidence that he is an exceptionally cool finisher, but he has too much playmaking responsibility in Maresca's team to be reasonably expected to also be the top scorer at Stamford Bridge. Neto is 25, the same age Salah was when he signed for Liverpool, and played some of the best football of his career at the Club World Cup. A big uptick in his scoring output is not impossible, but it is worth remembering that Salah scored 29 goals from open play across two Serie A seasons for Roma before moving to Anfield. Neto's best return in a league season is five. Estevao scored 13 goals (three of which were penalties) in a league season for Palmeiras before his 18th birthday, and has the clearest superstar potential of any Chelsea attacker besides Palmer. Gittens netted eight times in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund last season. Garnacho's scoring numbers are less impressive than his best flashes for Manchester United would suggest. Simons appears to have a real eye for goal, but he is fundamentally an attacking midfielder rather than a forward. The youth of all of the above makes firm projections of the future difficult. Perhaps one of them emerges as the prolific goalscorer that a Premier League title-winning Chelsea team likely needs, or perhaps Maresca can create a collective alchemy that recaptures the peculiar magic of that City team in 2020-21. Even that would be a break from much of recent history at Stamford Bridge. In the eight seasons since they last won the Premier League title, Chelsea have had the seventh-best attack in the division, scoring a little more than 63 goals on average. Maresca's side found the net 64 times in 38 games last season, one of the few areas that saw significant regression from Mauricio Pochettino's sole campaign in charge (which yielded 77 goals scored). Maresca is not lacking in attacking reinforcements to improve that tally, and may get one or two more before the transfer deadline. How they try to get there will be fascinating to watch, but Chelsea must find a way to become the sum of their spending in the final third if the champions of the world are to become champions of England again. The Royals' Bobby Witt Jr. hits 100th homer, joining some select company in MLB history
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. knew the ball was gone the moment it left his bat. Only later did the young Kansas City Royals star realize what kind of company it allowed him to join. The two-run shot in the eighth inning against Texas on Tuesday night merely padded the lead for Kansas City, which went on to a 5-2 victory. It was the fifth straight win for the Royals, who closed to within 2 1/2 games of an AL wild-card berth. But it also was the 100th career homer for Witt, making him the youngest in franchise history to reach that mark. He made it at the age of 26 years, 66 days, or more than a year earlier than Carlos Beltran when he accomplished it during the 2003 season. 'I want him up there every inning,' Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "I mean, you look at the lineup and you're trying to figure out, 'How many times can we get to the plate? How many guys can we keep on base for him when he does come to the plate?' 'I mean, that's an immense amount of pressure on a younger player to understand that's how everybody feels about him," Quatraro said. "But he has the physical ability, the makeup and the mental capacity to handle it.' The latest no-doubt shot, which came off Texas reliever Cole Winn and landed an estimated 449 feet to dead center field, made Witt only the fourth player with at least 100 homers and 100 stolen bases through his first four big league seasons. The others are Julio Rodríguez, Darryl Strawberry and Bobby Bonds — some pretty select company. Witt also become one of six shortstops in the last 95 years to hit at least 100 homers through his age-25 seasons. That list of luminaries includes Alex Rodriguez, Cal Ripken Jr., Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa and Hanley Ramirez; of those players, only Rodriguez and Ramirez also had 100 steals by the time they were 25 years old. 'It was special,' Witt admitted, 'just seeing the kind of names on the list or whatever they showed. But now, it's just kind of on to the next. It was special. We enjoy it. And now it's just onto the next game.' They keep getting more important for the Royals, who have won five straight and seven of their last eight. They head into the third-game of their four-game set against the Rangers on Wednesday night with a chance to inch closer to a wild-card spot, and they proved last year that they could do some postseason damage if they can only get in. Witt continues to be the catalyst of their second-half surge, too. He's hitting .291 with 18 homers and 69 RBIs. 'It's special when he goes out there,' said the Royals' Seth Lugo, who allowed just two runs on three hits while pitching into the seventh inning Tuesday night. 'I've been saying it for two years: He goes about his business the same way. He doesn't get up or down on himself. He's a master of consistency. That's what he does.' Witt also happens to be a slick fielder with a Gold Glove in his trophy case. But at the plate is where Witt has become a bona fide star. He led the majors with a .332 average last year, when he hit 32 home runs, stole 31 bases and finished with 109 RBIs. And while he may not quite replicate the average, homer total or RBI numbers in this campaign, he already has 32 stolen bases while getting caught just seven times. 'There's not too many guys that get to 100 (homers),' said Vinnie Pasquantino, who also homered Tuesday night. "And the fourth player in MLB history with 100 stolen bases? It's not a list I'll ever be on. I mean, it's kind of unbelievable. 'He's one of the best players in the league for a reason," Pasquantino said. 'A superstar.'
