100-mph showdown: Brewers phenom Jacob Misiorowski outduels Pirates ace Paul Skenes
Three games into his career, Jacob Misiorowski has yet to encounter a foe that can match up with his flame-throwing repertoire: Not the St. Louis Cardinals, the Minnesota Twins nor the Pittsburgh Pirates.
And you can add Paul Skenes to that list.
Skenes, one of the game's most dominant pitchers in just his second season, went up against the Milwaukee Brewers right-hander, who only just began his freshman season in Dairyland. And Misiorowski's near-perfect start to his career rumbled on despite the formidable opposition.
He struck out eight batters over five scoreless innings while Skenes suffered through one nightmare inning exacerbated by Pittsburgh's poor defense in Milwaukee's 4-2 victory.
Misiorowski set a major league record by giving up just three hits in his first three starts – with a minimum 16 innings pitched – edging the Oakland Athletics' Mike Norris, who gave up four hits in three starts in 1975.
Oh, nobody's quite ready to put Misiorowski, 23, up there with Skenes, who's actually two months his junior. But it is Skenes who put together a Rookie of the Year season and backed it up with a sophomore campaign in which he's struck out 110 in 106 innings, putting him on track to make a second consecutive All-Star Game start.
But Misiorowski's first three starts were certainly ones for the record books.
Rare heat
He'd already made history coming into Wednesday: Misiorowski became the first pitcher since 1900 to have more wins than hits given up in his first two career starts. Yep, that's just one hit over his first 11 innings, which included five no-hit innings in his major league debut against St. Louis.
That start ended when he rolled his ankle in the sixth inning, though his four walks given up might have prevented a shot at a no-hitter, anyway. The kid they call the "Miz" backed that up with six innings of one-hit, one-run ball at Minnesota, setting the stage for this showdown.
The two did not disappoint: Misiorowski threw 19 pitches of at least 100 mph, topping out at 102.4. Skenes also topped triple digits with a first-inning fastball, just the third time in the pitch-tracking era that two pitchers topped 100 in the same game.
And Misiorowski produced more fireball fodder: His five pitches of at least 102 mph trails only Hunter Greene (11), Justin Verlander and Jordan Hicks (6) in the pitch-tracking era. And the man has pitched just three games.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy had set a pitch count of around 75 and Misiorowski did him one better, completing five scoreless innings in 74 throws, striking out eight and walking two. He has seven walks in 16 innings, a bit of cleanup he'll have to work on, but for now a problem he can simply punch out of.
Walk worries
Meanwhile, Skenes got sideways just once Wednesday, but it was enough to ruin his day. Milwaukee loaded the bases on two walks and a single, but what could have been a limited-damage inning got worse when center fielder Oneil Cruz whiffed on a sliding catch for an RBI double and second baseman Nick Gonzales made an ill-advised throw home - wide, to boot - to set up two more runs.
So, Skenes was hardly bad - he struck out four in four innings - but a pair of walks pushed his pitch count to 78. Control has been a bugaboo for Skenes this year - he has 29 walks in 106 innings, nearly equaling the 29 in 133 innings his entire rookie season.
Again, not disastrous, and Misiorowski will undeniably experience similar ups and downs as his career gets off the ground. But he is still in the honeymoon phase and before a raucous crowd at American Family Field, continues to be a gift to Brewers fans.

Jacob deGrom loses no-hit bid in 8th, leads Rangers over Orioles 7-0
BALTIMORE (AP) — Jacob deGrom held Baltimore hitless until Colton Cowser's leadoff single in the eighth inning, leading the Texas Rangers over the Orioles 7-0 on Wednesday night. The right-hander, who turned 37 on June 19, retired his first 18 batters before walking Jackson Holliday on a high and outside full count slider. He walked Ryan O'Hearn with two outs in the seventh, throwing four straight balls after getting ahead 0-2 in the count. Cowser grounded a single to right on a 1-1 fastball. DeGrom (8-2) won his fourth straight decision, striking out seven and walking two. A two-time Cy Young Award winner and four-time All-Star, he started 20 of 24 hitters with strikes and threw 59 of 89 pitches for strikes, averaging 98.4 mph with his fastball. DeGrom has four complete games in 234 starts, pitching a one-hitter for the New York Mets against Philadelphia on July 17, 2016, when pitcher Zach Elfin hit a third-inning single. Jacob Webb and Cole Winn each got three straight outs as Baltimore was held to one hit for the third time this season and shut out for the eighth time. The Orioles have lost four of their last five. Josh Jung had three RBIs with an run-scoring single in the second and a two-run homer in the fourth off Brandon Young (0-2), helping Texas win its fourth straight road series. Corey Seager and Marcus Semien hit run-scoring singles in a three-run fourth that included Adolis García's sacrifice fly. Jonah Heim added a sixth-inning homer against Scott Blewett. Left-hander Jacob Latz held the Orioles hitless Tuesday until Ramón Laureano's leadoff single in the seventh. The Yankees' Clarke Schmidt pitched seven hitless innings against Baltimore on Saturday, and Gary Sánchez started the eighth with a single off reliever JT Brubaker. Key moment Cowser's single was perfectly placed between Holliday at second and O'Hearn at first. Key stat Texas has won 11 of deGrom's 16 starts. Up next Rangers: RHP Nathan Eovaldi (4-3, 1.56) starts a homestand opener against Seattle on Friday. Orioles: RHP Tomoyuki Sugano (5-4, 3.55) starts Friday night's series opener against Tampa Bay. ___ AP MLB:

Baylor's VJ Edgecombe hopes 'Philly likes Bahamians' after 76ers take him No. 3 overall in NBA draft
Associated Press CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — VJ Edgecombe experienced hardships throughout his childhood on Bimini, a tiny island in the Bahamas hardly known for developing NBA talent. Only 19, it wasn't much more than a decade ago when Edgecombe knew that his basketball talent — developed on the 'hard sand' of his native land — could be a way to provide so much more for his family. 'I don't think anyone on the island would have dreams of playing in the NBA as well as making it,' Edgecombe said. 'It would just sound so crazy.' His crazy dream is set to become a reality in Philadelphia. In win-now mode, the 76ers selected Edgecombe out of Baylor with the No. 3 overall pick in the NBA draft on Wednesday night to add their trio of oft-injured All-Stars the team hopes can return to form and make the 76ers a healthy title contender. 'Maybe Philly likes Bahamians,' he said this week in New York. 'We'll see.' The 6-4, 193-pound Edgecombe boasts explosive athleticism that stands out at both ends, notably as an above-the-rim finisher who creates highlight-reel moments. Edgecombe could be a rookie of the year contender or a rotation player, and his numbers next season won't matter much if two-time NBA scoring champion Joel Embiid can't make a successful return from knee surgery. Embiid had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in April and the Sixers had yet to update his condition before the draft. Former All-Stars and Paul George and Tyrese Maxey slogged through injury-plagued season as the 76ers — a franchise with perennial NBA championship aspirations — finished with a woeful 24-58 record that included a 5-31 stretch to close the season. Team President Daryl Morey said he would spend the summer trying make the roster younger and more athletic to potentially help the team fight off the rash of injuries that wrecked the season and provide a bit of a cushion if the core trio are sidelined again for long stretches. He starts with Edgecombe, picked over Rutgers star Ace Bailey, who canceled a pre-draft workout with the 76ers. Edgecombe finished in the draft combine's top 10 with a 38.5-inch max vertical leap, had seven games with at least three made 3s and 11 games with three-plus steals. He shot just 34% on 3s and made just 25% (13 of 59) in off-dribble jumpers, according to Synergy's analytics rankings. Edgecombe grew up in the Bahamas and is the the nation's highest-drafted player since Deandre Ayton was the No. 1 overall pick in 2018. And now, he's a guaranteed millionaire. 'Life wasn't always great," Edgecombe said. "We weren't as fortunate as a family. I was living off generators. There's been nights I was sleeping in the heat, no electricity. Just grateful to be here today.' Embiid, Maxey and George played all of 15 games together this season and the trio played a combined 119 games. Embiid, the 2023 NBA MVP, played only 19 games. Morey said in April all three should be back at '100%' by training camp. Edgecombe will be there to greet them — with a seven-mile island that includes NBA players and fellow natives Eric Gordon and Buddy Hield. Edgecombe was part of the Bahamian national team that also includedAyton. 'It shows that other kids can make it out,' Edgecombe said. 'That's the main thing. It's telling the kids they can have confidence and showing them that once you have confidence, one you have faith, it'll work.' ___ AP NBA: recommended

Technically, Rockets draft Duke center Khaman Maluach (who will be traded to Suns)
Technically, the Rockets drafted Duke center Khaman Maluach at No. 10 overall in the 2025 first round. He will be traded to Phoenix in early July as part of the Kevin Durant deal. Technically, Houston selected Duke center Khaman Maluach with the No. 10 overall selection in Wednesday's first round of the 2025 NBA draft. He then donned a Rockets hat. The key word, of course, is technically. Houston's No. 10 pick was sent to Phoenix earlier this week as part of the trade package to acquire All-Star forward Kevin Durant. So, the Rockets picked on behalf of the Suns. Similarly, the Rockets will pick on behalf of Phoenix at No. 59 overall in Thursday's second round. But because the Rockets-Suns deal needs to include the elevated 2025-26 salary of Jalen Green, the trade needs to wait until July to be made official. July is when the league's next fiscal year will start. Later in the first round, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that Maluach would be dealt from the Rockets to Phoenix as part of a trade 'to be finalized later.' It's not a secret as to what trade that was in reference to. So, as with Rudy Gay and others from back in the day, Maluach was technically drafted by the Rockets, and Houston will officially be part of his NBA career story. He will then be officially traded in early July and likely play for the Suns at the upcoming 2025 summer league in Las Vegas.
