'You have clothes, shoes, mobile phones because of us': BJP MLA sparks row with remarks
In controversial remarks, Maharashtra BJP MLA Babanrao Lonikar told a gathering that people who criticise his party and government should know they are getting "clothes, shoes, mobile, monetary benefits of schemes and money for sowing because of us".
Speaking at a function on 'Har Ghar Solar' scheme in his assembly constituency Partur in Jalna district of central Maharashtra, the former State minister highlighted the BJP-led government's welfare schemes and development work, and went on to berate the critics of his party.
A video of Mr. Lonikar's controversial remarks surfaced on social media on Thursday (June 26, 2025) and invited strong criticism from the opposition.
"There are a few people and especially the youth who criticize us and our party on social media platforms. We gave overhead water tanks, concrete roads, function halls and benefits of various government schemes in your village," he is heard telling the gathering.
"Babanrao Lonikar gave salaries to mothers of those who criticize us and also sanctioned pension for their fathers. (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi gave ₹6,000 to your father for sowing (a reference to PM Kisan Samman Nidhi). Your sister is benefiting from the Ladki Bahin Yojana. The clothes, shoes, mobile phones that you (BJP critics) have is because of us," the MLA is heard saying in the video.
Opposition hits out
Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC and Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve hit out at the BJP legislator for his tasteless remarks and dubbed him as an "indigenous version of the British".
Speaking such a language is not good in a democracy, he noted.
"Your MLA status is because of the people. Your clothes, shoes, air tickets, leadership position, diesel in (your) car is also because of the people," Mr. Danve wrote on X while hitting out at the ruling party lawmaker.
"People should remember these words (of Lonikar). Elections (of local bodies in the state) are coming," the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader further said.

Mumbai: At the receiving end of criticism after it issued a govt resolution on a three-language policy from Class 1 last week, the state govt in a partial rollback on Thursday said the third language would be taught via the play-way method, only orally, in Class 1 and 2, with no textbooks given to students and no benchmarks such as tests or exams. Instead, a common manual would be provided to teachers to "familiarize" students with that two years of informal education, a further decision will be taken regarding the method of teaching and evaluating the third language from Class 3. School education minister Dada Bhuse said teachers will receive a common manual meant to "familiarize" children with the sounds and rhythms of a new language. There will be no written content, just spoken language—songs, stories, games. The play-way method focuses on learning through play and activities. Though this announcement addresses concerns raised about exams and textbooks for Class 1 and 2 for now, the policy still diverges from the National Curriculum Framework, which has said the third language belongs to the middle school years, not the foundational stage. Officials said students in Marathi and English medium schools fall short of the 10-credit threshold their Hindi-medium peers and those from other national boards meet because the latter have three languages in curriculum. The present three-language move, officials said, is an attempt to level that field. "Teaching materials are still under development," said officials. Circulation will be limited only to teachers. Centre asks MCD to conduct vendors' survey as per 2014 Act
New Delhi: Central govt on Thursday directed Municipal Corporation of Delhi to ensure that a vendors' survey is conducted in the city as per Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014. Referring to a letter written by National Hawker Federation, the under secretary of the Union housing and urban affairs ministry wrote to the MCD commissioner, requesting an examination of the content of the representation made by the vendors' association. The letter urged action as deemed appropriate in accordance with the provisions of the 2014 Act. "The representation of NHF highlights serious concerns regarding the ongoing treatment and regulation of street vendors in Delhi. Key issues include the lack of transparency and legal compliance in the current vendor survey, exclusion of town vending committees (TVCs) from the process, ongoing harassment and evictions despite valid identification, and the absence of proper social protection measures," stated the letter written by under secretary Asgar Ali. In the representation, NHA secretary Anil Bakshi sought intervention to ensure TVC-led implementation, policy review and coordination with relevant stakeholders to safeguard the rights and livelihoods of street vendors in the national capital by civic bodies, including MCD. Referring to the submission, Bakshi said the Act came out in 2014, but the civic bodies had failed to complete the process for counting vendors, conducting surveys, assigning spaces to them, etc. "As per norms, all existing street vendors identified in the survey will be accommodated in the vending zones subject to a norm of 2.5% of the population of a ward, town and area. But the civic bodies are busy removing them and defining them as encroachers. This is nullifying vendors' chances to get surveyed," he claimed. Not just that, during the ongoing vendors' survey, town vending committee members are not at all engaged and the exercise is being carried out by the civic bodies with private concessionaires, Bakshi pointed out. "This is unfair. Further, those who are counted are not given any receipt or certificate defining their location and business," he added. An MCD official said that the municipal corporation received the letter on Thursday and was looking into the points highlighted in it.

ACB registers FIR against ex-Delhi ministers in corruption case
The Delhi Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) on Thursday registered a first information report (FIR) against former health ministers Saurabh Bharadwaj and Satyendar Jain in connection with alleged large-scale corruption in health infrastructure projects approved or executed during their tenures. The ACB sought permission for a probe in August 2024, on a complaint lodged by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Vijendra Gupta, alleging large-scale corruption in the health department. (Getty Images/iStockphoto) The FIR was filed under Section 13(1) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, which pertains to criminal misconduct by a public servant, and sections 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servants), 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), joint commissioner of police (ACB) Madhur Verma said. 'A comprehensive investigation has been launched to uncover the full extent of the alleged conspiracy and determine the roles and accountability of the former ministers, officials and private entities involved,' Verma said. In response, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) questioned why the FIR against Bharadwaj and Jain was being kept under wraps, and selective press notes being leaked. 'Is the FIR so baseless that the BJP fears it will become a national joke if released publicly?' it said in a statement. On Tuesday, officials aware of the matter said that the Centre, on the recommendation of lieutenant governor VK Saxena, gave its approval to initiate an investigation under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act against Bharadwaj and Jain. The ACB sought permission for a probe in August 2024, on a complaint lodged by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Vijendra Gupta, alleging large-scale corruption in the health department. The LG sent his recommendation to the Centre on May 6, officials said. The ACB will probe 24 hospital projects, including 11 greenfield (construction on unused land) and 13 brownfield (construction on land which was earlier used for other purposes) projects sanctioned in 2018-19 for a total of ₹ 5,590 crore, but are either delayed or have had their costs inflated, JCP Verma said. The ACB will also probe seven ICU (intensive care) hospitals, with a total bed capacity of 6,800, which were sanctioned at a cost of ₹ 1,125 crore in a six-month period starting September 2021. Three years on, only 50% of the work has been completed, and that too at a cost of ₹ 800 crore, Verma said. Verma said that verification of the complaint revealed unauthorised additional constructions at government hospitals in Jwalapuri, by M/s Parnika Commercial & Estate Pvt Ltd, and Madipur, by M/s Ramacivil India Construction Pvt Ltd, without approvals from competent authorities. 'The Madipur hospital project was to be completed by November 2022, but remains abandoned and far from completion,' Verma said. ACB officials said the seven ICU hospitals, contracted to M/s SAM India Buildwell Pvt Ltd, witnessed cost escalations exceeding 100%, with construction still incomplete beyond over the years, against the February 2022 deadline. 'Verification also found that the new block at Lok Nayak Hospital awarded to M/s Swadeshi Civil Infrastructure Pvt Ltd saw project costs escalate from ₹ 488 crores to ₹ 1,135 crores over four years, with the structure still incomplete beyond its January 2023 deadline' Verma said. ACB said that their preliminary probe found that the ministers repeatedly rejected cost-effective solutions, such as the NIC's e-hospital system, without justification. An official, requesting anonymity, said that while submitting the request for sanction, the ACB listed several corrupt activities which resulted in a loss to the government exchequer. In the request, the ACB cited repeated procedural lapses and planning failures that resulted in inflated expenditures. The department of vigilance forwarded the proposal to the Public Works Department (PWD) and the health and family welfare (H&FW) department, both of which supported the call for a probe. PWD officials recommended a 'thorough vigilance inquiry' to trace the chain of responsibility and identify violations. The departments also observed that upgrades and changes made after contracts were awarded led to further delays and cost overruns. Poor planning and imprecise estimates led to escalations, while disputes led to arbitration costs, imposing further financial strain on the exchequer. The two AAP leaders hit out at the charges framed under the FIR. In a statement, Bharadwaj said, 'The FIR would make it abundantly clear that, without any reasonable cause, only two former ministers have been named—while all health and PWD officers, who were actually responsible for executing the hospital projects, have been spared.' Jain said: 'There is, as yet, no evidence to suggest that these project sanctions were marred by corruption. Moreover, all these sanctions predate Saurabh Bharadwaj's tenure. How can a minister be held liable for actions taken two to five years before assuming office? Is this some kind of joke?'
