The best burger in America, according to a health expert

The best burger in America, according to a health expert

Miami Herald14-05-2025
May is National Burger Month and Hims is helping you celebrate with a roundup of the healthiest fast food burgers in the country.
It's also that time of year when many people are working toward various health goals, whether that's getting ready for a summer beach vacation or working on improving overall health and nutrition, so we decided to rank the nation's most popular burgers based on how healthy they are.
While burgers may not come to mind when you think of healthy eating, if you need a quick meal on the go and are craving a burger, some options are definitely healthier than others, and you can still make it work to fit into your meal planning.
What's healthiest for you may be slightly different depending on your health goals, but we partnered with a physician specializing in obesity medicine and SVP of Weight Loss at Hims, Dr. Craig Primack, to determine a methodology that includes a broad nutritional analysis.
Here are the six label categories we looked at as part of the ranking process:
Calories: Consuming excess calories has been linked to obesity and a number of related health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even depression. Calories from a fast food burger can quickly add up, so it's important to pay attention to this metric. Protein: Protein is a foundational building block of good health. It increases satiety so you feel full longer while also promoting lean muscle mass and higher metabolism rates.Trans fat: There are many health risks associated with trans fat intake, including cardiovascular disease and fertility issues in both men and women. Saturated fat: Similarly, high saturated fat intake has also been found to contribute to things like cognitive decline and dementia and even lower sperm counts. Net carbs: Not all carbs are bad, but refined carbs (like white burger buns) don't offer the same nutritional value as whole grain carbs. Looking at net carbs accounts for fiber content as well, which can help prevent rapid blood sugar changes.Sugar: Consuming too much sugar can lead to a greater risk of health conditions, such as cardiometabolic disease and dental disease. And in men, it may even reduce semen quality.
Hims looked at the five top burgers on the menus at the most burger chains in the U.S. That excludes some common options like a regular hamburger or cheeseburger from McDonald's, while still capturing most of their bestsellers like the Big Mac and Quarter Pounder with Cheese.
Key Findings
Shake Shack dominates with three out of the top four healthiest burgers. These burgers also had the least amount of net carbs. The burgers with the most calories also tended to be the burgers with the most protein, which can complicate the health equation. Some double and bacon burgers rank well thanks to higher protein and lower sugar and carb content.

Methodology: How Scores Were Calculated
To determine the healthiest burgers in America, Hims evaluated menus from the country's top burger chains based on 2024 revenue. The fast food restaurants included in the analysis were McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, SONIC Drive-In, Jack in the Box, Whataburger, Culver's, Five Guys, Hardee's, Carl's Jr., In-N-Out Burger, Shake Shack, Checkers and Rally's, and Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers.
Hims evaluated up to five burgers on each restaurant's permanent menu (as available) based on the following nutrition metrics: calories, protein, trans fat, saturated fat, net carbs, and sugar. We used a 2x multiplier for calories and trans fat and a 3x multiplier for protein.
3 Ways to Keep Your Burger Meal As Healthy As Possible
Before you place your order, consider making a few alterations to maximize the nutritional content of your meal.
Make your calories count. Not all calories are created equally, so if you're on a weight loss journey aim for your personal target calorie count by choosing more nutritious ingredients in your meal. For instance, a double burger, which has more protein content, would be a better choice than fries and a single burger. (Wondering how much protein you need? Check out this protein calculator.) Also watch for hidden ingredients lurking in burgers, such as higher sugar count and carbs in buns. For instance, some restaurants report adding high fructose corn syrup to buns for extra sweetness.Opt for a healthier side. Instead of making a meal with fries as your side, consider getting a salad or fruit slices instead. French fries are high in fat, oil, and salt, all of which decrease the overall nutritional profile of this fast food staple. Just be mindful of sneaky calories and sugar content in the salad dressing.Grab a low-calorie drink. You can find a wide variety of drink options when you grab a burger at a fast food restaurant, but adding a high-sugar drink can add a lot of calories to your meal. Water is, of course, the healthiest option, but an unsweetened iced tea or the occasional diet soda are also better options. If you're craving a soda, sparkling water can also be a satisfying option.

How Wall Street Skipped a Beat on Hims & Hers Health Stock (HIMS)

Hims & Hers Health (HIMS) is one of the market's most hotly debated stocks. The telehealth platform is shaking up personalized healthcare, delivering affordable treatments for everything from hair loss to weight management. It has its die-hard fans and vocal critics—and after the stock slid following its latest Q2 report published last week on August 4th, the bears might seem to be winning the argument. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. Yes, revenue fell short of Wall Street's sky-high expectations, and the booming obesity drug market faced some turbulence. But in my view, the market is missing the bigger picture. This was a stellar quarter—marked by explosive growth and strategic moves that scream long-term upside. And with the valuation still looking like a bargain, HIMS remains a cornerstone of my portfolio. I think now is a perfect time to buy the dip on HIMS stock, given the overshoot in bearish sentiment. Why Wall Street Freaked Out Wall Street can often be a drama queen, and HIMS felt the wrath post-earnings. The telehealth company reported revenue of $544.8 million, a solid 73% year-over-year jump, but it fell short of the $552 million analysts expected. The miss stung, especially after a stellar Q1 with 111% growth. It can be attributed mainly to regulatory headwinds in the compounding obesity drug market. The FDA called off the shortage allowance for GLP-1 knockoffs in February 2025, forcing HIMS to pivot from mass-producing these cheaper alternatives. Add to that a busted deal with Novo Nordisk (NVO), which sent shares spiraling back in June, and you've got a recipe for investor jitters. Legal risks are also looming, with Novo Nordisk filing various lawsuits against telehealth players for pushing 'personalized' compounded drugs. Beyond the revenue miss, gross margins took a hit, slipping from Q1's highs, and HIMS's third-quarter guidance of $580 million at the midpoint felt lukewarm compared to Wall Street's hopes. You can thus understand why investors got scared, troubled that HIMS's heavy reliance on GLP-1s might clip its wings. However, let's take a step back, as Wall Street's short-term tantrum is likely missing the bigger picture here. Growth That's Still Red-Hot Despite the noise, HIMS is charging forward like a freight train. Subscriber growth was quite impressive, with the company reaching 2.4 million users, up 31% from last year, demonstrating the platform's sticky appeal, which offers tailored solutions for weight loss, dermatology, and more. Notably, revenue grew 73% to $544.8 million, driven by booming demand for telehealth weight-loss services and personalized offerings. And the critical factor here is that the company is not just relying on obesity drugs. In fact, its dermatology segment is growing over 50% year-over-year, with 80% of that business now tied to proprietary, personalized SKUs that boosted retention by 20%. HIMS also completed some key moves this quarter including Zava, a U.K.-based telehealth player that should, in turn, set the stage for expansion into Germany, Ireland, and France. Looking ahead, the company is eyeing Canada in 2026, timed with the arrival of generic semaglutide, which could slash prices to $75-$100 from the current $200-$400 range. Plus, HIMS is diving into longevity and preventative care, with at-home lab testing and compounding facilities to personalize treatments like never before. So even though the market believes that GLP1-related pressures present a notable risk, I see that HIMS is building a healthcare ecosystem that's poised to keep revenue climbing. Is HIMS a Good Stock to Buy? There are 11 analysts offering price targets on HIMS stock via TipRanks, featuring a very mixed consensus. As I mentioned earlier, this is a highly polarizing stock. Evidently, the stock carries a Hold consensus rating based on three Buy, six Hold, and two Sell ratings over the past three months. HIMS' average stock price target of $51.33 implies about 1% downside over the next twelve months, which also reflects Wall Street's concerns about the telehealth innovator. A Valuation That's Too Good to Ignore HIMS's valuation is where things get juicy. The market's hung up on the GLP-1 drama, but that's just one piece of the puzzle. HIMS is trading at under 5x sales, which I believe is a dirt-cheap multiple for a company growing revenue at 73% and subscribers at 31%. Sure, the P/E ratio's sitting at 83x this year's expected EPS, which might raise eyebrows. However, profitability is set to surge from here. Analysts are projecting 41% EPS growth next year alone, meaning that P/E will shrink fast as profits catch up. Regulatory risks are still a big deal for HIMS. But make no mistake, as this company isn't just hanging on to compounded drugs. They're clearly building a fast-growing platform that covers weight loss, skincare, low testosterone, menopause care, and now longevity. The Zava acquisition and Canada expansion will only fuel that growth further. HIMS' Short-Term Noise Heralds Long-Term Opportunity While Wall Street zeroed in on HIMS's short-term hiccups, the company's long-term story remains intact and compelling. With explosive subscriber growth and expanding product lines, HIMS is quietly building a diversified, future-ready healthcare platform. The GLP-1 drama may have rattled the market, but I believe it's just noise in a much bigger narrative. For those with patience and vision, HIMS offers a rare blend of innovation, scalability, and upside that's too promising to ignore, especially after the post-earnings plunge.

Hims & Hers Shares Plunge. Is This a Buying Opportunity or Should Investors Run for the Hills?

Key Points Hims & Hers Health continues to post robust growth. Shares sold off, however, after revenue missed analyst expectations. The stock is still reasonably valued given its growth prospects. 10 stocks we like better than Hims & Hers Health › Hims & Hers Health (NYSE: HIMS) is one of the most volatile stocks on the market at the moment, prone to big swings in either direction. This is true even intraday, as the stock plunged following the company's second-quarter results, only to rally back, only to plunge again. As of this writing, the stock is still trading up more than 130% this year. Let's take a closer look at the most recent earnings results for this telehealth company focused on providing accessible and affordable healthcare solutions for various health and wellness needs, and its prospects. Who knows, you might want to jump in on this somewhat volatile growth stock. Hims saw strong revenue growth in Q2 Hims & Hers continued to deliver outstanding revenue growth in Q2, with sales climbing 73% year over year to $544.8 million. That was toward the high end of its forecast for revenue of $530 million to $550 million, but it missed analyst expectations for revenue of $552 million. Monthly online revenue per subscriber jumped 30% to $74 per month, while the number of subscribers climbed 31% to nearly 2.44 million. The company said that the number of subscribers in both oral weight loss and dermatology grew more than 55% in the quarter. Customers using at least one personalized subscription increased by 89% to 1.5 million, representing more than 60% of the Hims & Hers subscriber base. It said that 70% of new patients who join the platform use a personalized treatment plan, and that the number of subscribers using a personalized treatment plan to treat multiple conditions skyrocketed 170% to more than 500,000. Revenue from GLP-1 weight loss drugs fell from $230 million in Q1 to $190 million in Q2, after Novo Nordisk ended a partnership with the telehealth company. Nonetheless, it still expects to generate $725 million of revenue this year from weight loss drugs, led by oral weight loss products and personalized doses. Hims & Hers continues to spend heavily on marketing to attract new customers. During the quarter, its marketing spending jumped 50% to nearly $218 million. Marketing expenses took up 40% of revenue in the quarter, though that was down from 46% a year ago, so the company continues to see leverage in this area despite the increased spending. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) surged to $82.2 million from $39.3 million a year ago. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) came in at $0.17, topping the $0.15 analyst consensus as compiled by LSEG. Metric Q1 Results Growth (YOY) Revenue $544.8 million 73% Monthly online revenue per subscriber $74 30% Subscribers 2.44 million 31% Adjusted EBITDA $82.2 million 109% Adjusted EPS $0.17 183% Marketing expense $231 million 77% Marketing as % of revenue 40% (600 basis points) Gross margin 76% (500 basis points) Data source: Hims & Hers Health. YOY = year over year. Looking ahead, Hims & Hers maintained its forecast for 2025 revenue to be between $2.3 billion and $2.4 billion, equal to growth of 56% to 63%. It also kept its adjusted EBITDA guidance of $295 million to $335 million. For Q3, it projected revenue of between $570 million and $590 million, and adjusted EBITDA of $60 million to $70 million. The company is starting to look toward international expansion to bolster growth. It will begin by focusing on Canada next year, while its acquisition of Zava in July will help it expand into Europe. It also anticipates entering the Latin American and Asian markets in the coming years. Hims & Hers also continues to expand into new areas. It will launch hormonal health soon, starting with lab testing. The company believes this will help it reach its targets of $6.5 billion in revenue and $1.3 billion in adjusted EBITDA in 2030. Is the stock a buy? Hims & Hers continues to be a growth engine. Even though there's been some disruption from its spat with Novo Nordisk, it is still seeing strong growth across different health categories. With the company moving into new areas, like hormonal health and longevity, and looking to expand internationally, it has a lot of growth opportunities ahead. Meanwhile, with the majority of its subscribers on personalized treatment plans, it has a pretty sticky user base. From a valuation standpoint, the stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of around 55 based on the analyst consensus for 2025. But its forward price/earnings-to-growth ratio (PEG) is under 0.6, and stocks with PEG ratios below 1 are usually considered undervalued. Given that it operates a subscription business with high gross margins, you can also look at the stock from a price-to-sales perspective; on that front, it trades at a multiple of 5.5 times 2025 analyst estimates. Overall, I'd say, based on the type of business the company is in, that it's still reasonably priced. However, it's still a volatile stock that carries some risk depending on what happens in the weight loss segment. Still, I really like its international opportunity, and think Hims & Hers Health could have solid long-term upside from here. Should you invest $1,000 in Hims & Hers Health right now?
