Video: CBP officer shot by illegal immigrant released by Biden admin
In a Sunday press release, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it had 'lodged a detainer against an illegal alien accused of ambushing and shooting a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer who was off duty in New York City in Fort Washington Park under the George Washington Bridge on July 19 at approximately 11:51 PM ET.'
'A witness of the attack—believed to be an attempted robbery—states that she and the victim were sitting on the rocks by the water when 2 subjects on a scooter drove up to them and the passenger got off the back and approached them with a firearm drawn,' the Department of Homeland Security added. 'The off-duty CBP officer responded by withdrawing his own firearm in self defense.'
A video shared on X, formerly Twitter, by Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin shows Saturday's shooting incident.

While the press release confirmed that the Customs and Border Protection officer was shot in both his left cheek and right arm, the Department of Homeland Security noted that the officer was hospitalized in stable condition.
In Sunday's press release, the Department of Homeland Security identified one of the suspects as Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, an illegal immigrant from the Dominican Republic who illegally entered the United States in April of 2023 and was released into the U.S. under former President Joe Biden's administration.
In a statement on Monday, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem confirmed that the second suspect in Saturday's shooting, identified as Christhian Aybar-Berroa, had been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. Noem noted that Aybar-Berroa is also an illegal immigrant from the Dominican Republic who illegally entered the United States under the Biden administration in 2022.

'He has a criminal record in New York City and detainers were IGNORED thanks to @ericadamsfornyc sanctuary city policies,' Noem tweeted. 'He was arrested for reckless endangerment and larceny and was released before ICE could get him off the streets.'
In a Sunday statement on Truth Social, Trump wrote, 'Last night, in New York City, an incredible CBP Officer was shot in the face by an Illegal Alien Monster freed into the Country under Joe Biden. He was apprehended at the Border in April 2023 but, instead of being deported, was RELEASED. The CBP Officer bravely fought off his attacker, despite his wounds, demonstrating enormous Skill and Courage.'
'The Democrats have flooded our Nation with Criminal Invaders, and now, they must all be thrown out or, in some cases, immediately prosecuted in that we cannot take a chance that they are able to come back,' Trump added. 'That's how evil and dangerous they are!'

Ex-Biden chief of staff giving 'credible' answers in House Oversight cover-up probe, lawmakers say
Former White House chief of staff Ron Klain is cooperating with congressional investigators seeking information into former President Joe Biden's mental health during his time in office, a pair of lawmakers suggested Thursday. Klain, who ran Biden's White House for the first two years of his term, is currently sitting down with staff on the House Oversight Committee as part of Chair James Comer's probe into whether top administration aides covered up signs of decline in the former president while he was in office. Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., told reporters roughly an hour into the session that Klain "answered every question" that Republicans put forward. "I found Mr. Klain to be very credible. He answered every single question. He was fully cooperative. There are times where he was asked about personal conversations he had with the president, and he was forthcoming," Khanna said. "I really appreciate his candor and the comprehensive way he had answered every question." Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., told Fox News Digital minutes later when asked if Klain was credible, "Yeah – when I say credible, I think he is telling what he knows accurately. I mean, he's trying to be accurate. So that's what I'd say." "In my opinion, he is not trying to avoid answering the questions. He's answering the questions carefully. He's saying the things that I kind of expected him to say," Biggs said. "But he's been answering the questions, I think, forthrightly and in the way he sees the world." In closed-door transcribed interviews, it's common for Republican and Democratic committee staff to each get an hour of questioning at a time, trading off until no more questions remain. The two lawmakers spoke to reporters after the first hour of GOP questioning was finished. That means Klain's interview could go on for several hours. Comer, R-Ky., is investigating whether Biden's top White House aides concealed signs of mental decline in the then-president, and if that meant executive actions were signed via autopen without his knowledge. Biden maintained he "made every decision" in a recent interview with The New York Times.

What's happening with forgiveness for student loans on income-based repayment plans?
Amid a federal overhaul of student loan plans, many borrowers have been left wondering what it means for their hopes of loan forgiveness. In particular, those who are enrolled in a repayment plan known as income-based repayment, or IBR, have wondered if forgiveness will still be available to them. A recent update from the Education Department said forgiveness through the IBR plan is paused while systems are updated. 'IBR forgiveness will resume once those updates are completed,' the agency said. IBR is not affected by a federal court's injunction blocking former President Joe Biden's Saving on a Valuable Education, or SAVE, plan. The IBR plan was created by Congress separately from other existing repayment plans, including those known as PAYE and ICR. It's also exempt from some changes coming from President Donald Trump's tax and spending bill. Here's what to know. Following a court injunction last summer, loan forgiveness for the SAVE, Income-Contingent Repayment, or ICR, and Pay As You Earn, or PAYE, plans is currently paused because those plans were not created by Congress. The legal action called into question whether student loan forgiveness was authorized under the federal statute that governs those plans. The IBR plan was created under a different authority. IBR, created by Congress, reduces monthly payments for borrowers with lower incomes. It also invokes a statute that authorizes student loan forgiveness of the balance at the end of a 20- or 25-year repayment term. The Education Department hasn't given a timeline for when its system update will be complete and forgiveness will resume. Borrowers enrolled in IBR who have reached the threshold for forgiveness but who are not seeing their loans discharged as a result of the pause may continue to make payments with the expectation that the Education Department will refund the excess payments. The plan offers forgiveness after 240 or 300 monthly payments, depending on when borrowers enrolled. Borrowers can also request forbearance from their loan servicer. In that case, interest would continue to accrue on any remaining balance. Trump's tax and spending law will eventually phase out the ICR, PAYE and SAVE plans, replacing them with the Repayment Assistance Plan. IBR plans will continue to exist and to provide forgiveness after 20 or 25 years. RAP, in contrast, will require 30 years of repayment before forgiveness is granted. Lewis writes for the Associated Press.
