Villa Defender Tyrone Mings Named on Euro 2028 Board of Directors
The 32-year-old Mings is the only player among the three independent non-executive directors helping to organize the tournament, The Associated Press reported.
Mings has played for Villa since 2019 and has made 18 appearances for England, for which he was part of the squad at the 2021 tournament.
He has missed large chunks of the past two seasons because of injuries and will be 35 when Euro 2028 takes place, likely meaning he won't be involved in the England squad then.
Confirmation of Mings' involvement came in the announcement of the company — officially named 'UK & Ireland 2028 Limited' — tasked with delivering Euro 2028. English Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt will also chair the Euro 2028 board.
A tournament anchored in England with modern stadiums generating huge matchday revenues was a safe choice for UEFA eyeing its bottom line after the high-maintenance, low-revenue Euro 2021 that was staged during the pandemic in half-empty venues across 11 countries.
UEFA cash reserves after the pandemic dropped to 360 million euros in its most recent financial report, and Euro 2028 is set to lift the number back above UEFA's target of 500 million euros.
The men's Euros, held every four years, is the foundation of UEFA's finances and funds development payments to its members.
Everton's new waterfront stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock is set to open for the start of next season, replacing the club's long-time home of Goodison Park, and was included in the list of venues hosting Euro 2028 matches announced in April 2023. Bramley-Moore Dock is currently staging test events.
Casement Park, a derelict stadium in Belfast, was also on the initial list but has since been dropped, with the British government unable to commit to providing the funding to redevelop it in time. UEFA says it hasn't yet decided where to reallocate the games that would have been in Belfast.

ISLAMABAD: In a major development, Islamabad has launched digital land record and passport processing services for Pakistanis living in the United Kingdom (UK), the Pakistani foreign office said on Monday. The development came during a visit to the UK by Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, who inaugurated the landmark initiatives at the Pakistan High Commission in London on Monday. The UK is home to over 1.6 million Pakistanis who have often complained of difficulties in sale, purchase, transfer and settlement of disputes concerning their lands back home, despite contributing significantly to remittances, business and cultural links. The Land Record Service enables British Pakistanis to remotely access and manage property records in Pakistan's most populous Punjab province, according to the foreign office. 'This digital platform offers services such as online sale deeds, 'Fard' (Record of Rights), 'e-Girdawari,' mutation entries and document attestation, all secured by blockchain technology to ensure transparency and prevent fraud,' the foreign office said in a statement. 'A dedicated Land Services Desk at the Pakistan High Commission in London will support the pilot phase, with plans to expand to other Pakistani consulates in the United Kingdom.' Concurrently, the One Window Passport Processing System, implemented by the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (IMPASS), streamlines passport application procedures by consolidating multiple steps into a single, efficient counter, according to the foreign office. 'This system reduces processing time to approximately 10 minutes per application, enhancing convenience, reducing congestion, and ensuring greater transparency for British Pakistanis,' it said. Dar described the initiatives as 'a digital leap toward safeguarding diaspora rights and fostering investment,' while the foreign office said they marked a significant step toward efficient, transparent and accessible governance for Pakistanis abroad. The Pakistani deputy premier earlier met the UK's Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Hamish Falconer, and shared Pakistan's commitment to economic reforms and perspective on regional developments, including peace and stability in South Asia following a military standoff with India in May. 'Both sides reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening cooperation across political, economic, climate, and people-to-people domains,' the Pakistani foreign office said. The UK is among Pakistan's largest bilateral development partners, with cooperation spanning education, health, climate resilience, governance reform and trade. Dar is on an official visit to the UK since Saturday to strengthen Pakistan-UK ties, boost cooperation in digital technology, artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship, and enhanced cooperation with the Commonwealth. Separately, the deputy premier held a meeting with Pakistani-origin British parliamentarians, Mohammad Yasin, Tahir Ali, Imran Hussain, Ayoub Khan and Adnan Hussain, according to the foreign office. He underscored the deep historical and cultural bonds between Pakistan and the UK and emphasized Pakistan's strong commitment to enhancing bilateral parliamentary exchanges with the United Kingdom. Pakistan issues no restrictions on mountain expeditions despite recent climber deaths
PESHAWAR — Pakistan has not imposed any warnings or restrictions on mountaineering expeditions in its northern region, a local official said Sunday, despite the recent deaths of foreign climbers on some of the country's most dangerous peaks. Faizullah Faraq, spokesperson for the government of Gilgit-Baltistan — home to the world's second-highest mountain, K2 — said climbers are fully aware of the extreme risks posed by weather and terrain, yet choose to proceed. 'Despite that, they willingly accept these challenges and come here to attempt these summits,' Faraq told The Associated Press. The statement follows the death of Chinese climber Guan Jing, 37, who was struck by falling rocks while ascending K2 last Tuesday. Her body was recovered Saturday and remains at the Combined Military Hospital in Skardu. Pakistani officials have contacted Chinese authorities in Islamabad regarding the repatriation process. Jing's death came weeks after German Olympic gold medalist and climber Laura Dahlmeier died while attempting to summit Laila Peak in the Karakoram range. Faraq noted that families of foreign climbers typically request recovery operations, but in some cases, if the family declines, the remains are left where the climber is a major draw for international mountaineers from May to September, with hundreds attempting climbs each season. Faraq said the government is working to enhance infrastructure, rescue capacity, and safety for climbers, as expeditions contribute significantly to the local economy.'A large number of people work on these expeditions, feeding their families for the whole year with these earnings,' he mountaineering in the region remains extremely hazardous due to avalanches, falling rocks, and rapid weather changes. In August last year, two Russian climbers were stranded for six days before being Gilgit-Baltistan region, which lies in the disputed Kashmir territory, has also been affected by heavier-than-normal monsoon rains this year. Newcastle held by 10-man Villa after Konsa sees red
BIRMINGHAM, England: Newcastle got a worrying glimpse of life without Alexander Isak as they were held to a 0-0 draw in their Premier League opener at Aston Villa despite Ezri Konsa's dismissal. Villa defender Konsa was sent off for a professional foul on Anthony Gordon midway through the second half on Saturday. But Newcastle were unable to take advantage in a toothless display that showed why they are so desperate to keep hold of Isak. The Sweden striker was not involved against Villa after reportedly telling the club he wants to leave to join Premier League champions Liverpool. Isak, 25, was the subject of a rejected £110 million ($149 million) bid from Liverpool earlier this month. 'I don't think we dominated, chance-wise, the way we wanted. We were maybe a little bit too anxious to score,' Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said. 'If you're not totally together in the Premier League, you're going to find it very difficult, but I think we answered a few questions today in terms of our spirit.'
