William hugged by fans during visit to ‘fantastic' youth centre

Independent24-04-2025
The Prince of Wales was hugged and mobbed by south Londoners when he visited a 'fantastic' youth centre which he pledged to support.
William was stopped in his tracks by a female fan who bounded over and asked for a hug as he walked towards the centre, and when he left the prince was surrounded by selfie-seeking well-wishers.
The future King visited Mentivity, a youth club in Walworth that aims to go beyond teaching life skills and help children acquire the emotional and social tools needed for a digital world.
He played computer games with youngsters – losing at football but winning a car race – and told an executive from Spotify, which is working with Mentivity, that he was surprised the King's recent Apple play list did not feature more classical music.
When the prince arrived, Oluwaseyi Soyebo-Idowu, 50, waved at William to stop after she spotted him posing for a selfie with another member of the public and asked a passer-by to take a snap of them with her camera phone.
Elevating William to the status of monarch, she said afterwards: 'I'm very excited, I've never seen a King – it was very nice to meet him. He was so humble, bringing himself down to ordinary level.'
Later, William sat down for a discussion with Mentivity founders Sayce Holmes-Lewis and Leon Wright and some of their partners and told them: 'You've got a really dynamic team who get the local community and understand the challenges and that is really exciting.'
He added: 'What can we do to take Mentivity and make it bigger, without diluting what you do – so I'm already thinking about that.'

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau on intense fight scenes that saw King and Conqueror star 'knocked out'

EXCLUSIVE: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau stars as William, Duke of Normandy, in upcoming BBC series King & Conqueror. Most will recognise Nikolaj Coster-Waldau for his role of Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones but for his latest venture, he's transformed into William, Duke of Normandy - or as many will know him, William the Conqueror. ‌ The Danish actor will go head to head against James Norton in the BBC historical drama which follows the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. ‌ King and Conqueror also marks the first time Nikolaj has directed. And funnily enough, his directorial debut saw him choreograph a scene which sees the leading actor fight bare-chested. ‌ Speaking of filming the fight, which fans will get the chance to see in episode five, he recalled: "That was tough. I was spending a lot of time planning that because we only had so much time to do it. "The stunt team was incredible. The trick, or the challenge, when you do something like that, of course, because everyone's bare-chested, you can't hide anything. You know you're going to hurt yourself when you do these things, so we had to be very careful." Heaping praise on the stunt team, which included UFC and MMA fighters, Nikolaj shared: "These guys insane. The Icelandic guys, they're brilliant. I mean, there's one scene, the guy I'm fighting - he's in fights in the the big stuff - which is why I wanted to be the guy choking him out. "There's this big, big guy - at one point, he lifts up James [Norton] - early in the fight, he takes one of the other stunt guys and he throws him against this wagon. "And that was planned but what wasn't planned was that he's thrown him so hard that he went through the wagon and he like completely crashed the whole thing. The sound you hear, it's literally a guy being thrown through. But they just took it." ‌ He went on to share that during filming, everyone got so involved, one member of the team was knocked out. "We had rehearsals where there was a guy knocked out. I mean they go so close, right? And it was a mistake both of them. I mean you should always be able to hold your fist but the other guy, he instead like holding the distance, he kind of moved forward right as he was swinging. ‌ "And they were also you know MMA fighters. So his tooth went out, blood out. And then the other guy, of course, because he hit the tooth, broke [his knuckle], he had to have stitches in his hand as well." King and Conqueror is the story of a clash that defined the future of a country for a thousand years. The synopsis reads: "Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were two men destined to meet at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; two allies with no design on the English throne, who found themselves forced by circumstance and personal obsession into a war for possession of its crown." King and Conqueror airs Sunday 24 August on BBC One at 9pm.

Prince William or Harry, who would you choose as the godfather?

Who didn't shrivel a little bit inside and think, 'Oh God, Poor Them' when they read that the Duke and Duchess of Westminster have been losing sleep over whether or not they can ask Prince William and Harry to be godparents to their firstborn child Cosima. It's not often that we can imagine what it's like being the Duke and Duchess lying in the marital bed at Eaton Hall, gazing up at the four poster canopy, but now we have a pretty accurate idea, right down to the bottle of Gaviscon on his bedside table, the intermittent heavy sighing and a lot of sentences whispered in the dark beginning: 'OK, let's not panic…'. I mean, where to begin? Even if the brothers weren't estranged and guaranteed to cause a bone chilling, side eye frost up at the font (this isn't like a society wedding when you could put one of them on a table in the north end of the marquee and the other one in the deep south and they need never meet) this would be a very testing moment for the Westminsters. In normal civilian circs couples get to the point of tearing their hair out deciding who is and isn't going to make the cut, even if it's a fontless, low-profile situation with barely a ceremony. The Westminsters are experiencing the horror of being a parent obliged to publicly choose the most important people in their lives — two of whom are extremely high-profile warring royalty — and their first problem is they probably can't have both. There are a limited number of these godparenting gongs to hand out (who knows what the decent number is for aristos but Prince George has seven godparents, which is probably a good gauge) which means the heir and the spare is almost certainly one Windsor too many. So how to choose which? Naturally Cosima's parents will want the brother who means the most to them, to reward their loyalty, acknowledge their suitability (because they're lovely to be around/great with kids/the future king) and then there are the pragmatic considerations. Is there any point having a godparent who won't ever be in the UK on account of his security issues and all his old friends' wives being very much not up for sharing hairdressers with Meghan? Is it a wise move when the brothers are on non-speaks, their mutual friends are more or less (minus a van Straubenzee) on William's side, therefore not speaking to Harry, and pretty much everyone apart from Princess Eugenie is in cold-shoulder mode. Choosing Harry as a godparent instead of William would at this point be a bit like picking Elon Musk when you could have Elton John. (They won't be asking Elton, that's one easy decision, and presumably Elton is closed for business now anyway because he has ten godchildren including Brooklyn and Romeo Beckham and Liz Hurley's son Damian.) The Westminsters will be asking themselves what will Harry be able to bring to the party as a godparent that William can't? Hmmm. Juggling and impersonations for sure, but on Zoom… not quite the same. Would have said cocktail-making classes down the line, but that's no longer guaranteed. Hands-on Africa experience trips. Again, less likely than they were. • Kate is downsizing — and living life on her own terms now On the other hand it's well known that a small part of choosing godparents is locking them in for the future. It's saying, 'We will be seeing each other in 30 years' time for better for worse, for richer for poorer and you'll be at my kid's wedding.' It's like marrying your friends in a small way and reminding them that they've made a vow of constancy and you'll be holding them to it. Maybe hooking in Harry at this point is the sensible and forward-thinking move. An insurance against things getting any worse on the royal family division front. An act of selfless peace making. Maybe not. Maybe they could send Harry a note asking if he minded being a gent and passing on this one and being godparent to the next one, perhaps adding that with any luck that one will be a boy and Harry can teach him polo. (The Westminsters have another problem if they're playing this by the book, and they probably are, besides too many applicants for too few positions, which is the rule of requiring more female godparents for girls and more males for boys — or at least an even split. All Damian Hurley's godparents are male but then Liz was making up for an absence of a father figure at the time. Two Windsors might just tip the male balance and force them to leave off a vital future Anna Wintour.) Last, but very much not least, on the list of headaches for the new parents: who else might they upset when they finally lay out their top team. There's the current King and Queen — they probably wouldn't mind either way if they picked Harry over William — they seem to be over it all and just desperate to be left to get on with the job. There's the future King and Queen — they probably would mind and think come on Hugh who's going to be there for you and who can get you into the royal box at Wimbledon and who wrote Spare? Poor Westminsters.

Princess Andre reunites with Katie Price after feud and Peter's angry statement

Princess Andre appears to have resolved any conflict with her mum Katie Price after the pair were snuggled up together in a cosy new snap as they enjoyed a night in watching TV Princess Andre has been snapped enjoying her mum Katie Price 's company for the first time since their "rift" was made public. ‌ The pair cuddled up for a selfie posted by Princess on Snapchat as they posed in pyjamas, enjoying a night in together to watch the boxing alongside Katie's boyfriend, JJ Slater. Princess captioned the snap, writing, "Mumzy," appearing to put any talk of a feud with her mother behind them. ‌ The mum and daughter duo were said to be at loggerheads after Katie was banned from appearing in Princess' reality TV show, The Princess Diaries. Katie claimed that her daughter's management team, who she shares with dad Peter Andre, had told her it was advisable not to be seen with her mother in public. ‌ Katie was reportedly also excluded from attending Princess' 18th birthday party as it was being filmed for the show. The row sparked further friction as Katie and ex-husband Peter have since taken swipes at each other online in the past few days. The pair also appeared to be poking fun at their rift in a previous upload as Princess showed her fans that Katie's only liked song on Spotify was I Hate U by SZA. She captioned the screenshot, writing, "Mum cracks me up." Princess has shared other posts during the week that appeared to indicate the feud was over as she posted two video clips of what appeared to be Katie's hairless cats. One video showed a newborn kitten after Katie confirmed on her podcast earlier this week that her cat was due to give birth and then shared her own pictures of the kittens on Snapchat. Earlier this week princess' dad Peter shared a shock statement where he spoke about Katie and her recent comments. He wrote, "For sixteen years I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silence has been incredibly frustrating." He continued: "That ends today. The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood. ‌ "In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before out of respect for my children. In 2011 and 2015, publicly documented court cases found my ex wife had made false claims. She was ordered to pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise, to me and my management. He concluded, "The same falsehoods are being repeated today. Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations that I have yet to address. Those will be dealt with in the coming months." However, in her latest podcast Katie claimed that Princess lives with her, she said, "I've missed out so much with Princess. I haven't watched the show, but, people have told me how proud I should be of the kids and how they Princess does talk highly of me all the way through it so although I'm not in the show she speaks about me all the time which is really sweet. "But why wouldn't she, because she lives with me. And this is another thing I need to clear up, the kids have never lived just with Pete, we've shared the kids."
