This 1874 Law Protects Indian Women From Their Husbands' Debts
A colonial-era law passed nearly 150 years ago continues to act as one of the strongest legal shields for married women's financial security in the country. The Married Women's Property Act (MWPA), 1874, was enacted during British rule, but its relevance has only grown with time, especially as women increasingly contribute to household income and wealth creation.
The Act's core purpose is simple but powerful; it ensures that a married woman's income, inheritance, savings, insurance proceeds, and property remain her own, completely protected from her husband's debts or claims by his creditors.
What MWPA Guarantees
The MWPA gives a married woman the right to hold, inherit, and sell property in her own name without any interference from her husband. Unlike in many other cases of shared family finances, her assets cannot be automatically seized to repay her husband's liabilities.
A particularly important provision relates to life insurance. If a husband takes out a life insurance policy under the MWPA for the benefit of his wife or children, creditors cannot touch the payout, even in the event of bankruptcy or heavy debts. The money directly secures the family's future. Similarly, property inherited by a woman remains solely hers and cannot be diverted to settle her husband's financial obligations.
Today, financial risks – from business failures to mounting personal loans – can quickly wipe out household wealth. The MWPA acts as a legal firewall, ensuring that women and children are not left vulnerable because of a husband's financial missteps.
Financial experts often advise women to insist on life insurance policies being taken under the MWPA clause, describing it as a 'hidden but powerful tool" for family protection. Yet, awareness remains low, and many women do not know that such a safeguard exists.
Despite being enacted in 1874, the MWPA has stood the test of time. At a moment when women's economic participation is higher than ever, the Act provides a rare, ironclad guarantee; a woman's financial independence cannot be undone by her husband's debts.

Bentley EXP 15 Concept debuts publicly at Concours d'Elegance. Here's what it's about…
Bentley Motors has revealed the EXP 15 concept at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Although the model will not be produced, it offers insight into how the British marque envisions its future design language, particularly as it prepares for its first fully electric vehicle. The EXP 15 is a full-size concept grand tourer that merges Bentley's heritage design cues with modern aerodynamics and digital technologies. Measuring over five metres long, it recalls the proportions of the 1930 Bentley Speed Six Gurney Nutting Sportsman coupé, also known as the 'Blue Train." Why does it reference the 'Blue Train'? The 'Blue Train" coupé became famous when Bentley chairman Woolf Barnato raced it against a luxury express train from Cannes to Calais in 1930, reaching London before the train. By echoing its long bonnet, upright grille, and rearward cabin, the EXP 15 nods to this story while presenting a contemporary interpretation. The Bentley EXP 15 takes inspiration from the 1930 Bentley Speed Six Gurney Nutting Sportsman coupe. What design principles does it showcase? Bentley's design team says the EXP 15 incorporates five exterior themes that will shape the company's future cars. These include an upright and confident front profile, a reinterpretation of the Bentley grille for the electric era, a long and uninterrupted bonnet line, muscular haunches that suggest restrained power, and a bold rear surface that frames the redesigned Winged B emblem. How does the interior differ from today's Bentleys? The cabin adopts a three-seat layout rather than the usual four or five. A swivelling passenger seat makes entry and exit easier, while storage spaces have been designed to accommodate pets and hand luggage. Traditional materials such as wool from historic British mills are combined with modern 3D-printed titanium finishes. Digital features can appear when needed or recede into the background, giving the cabin a mix of classic craftsmanship and futuristic technology. What new technologies are on display? The EXP 15 showcases what Bentley calls a 'Magical Fusion" of physical and digital elements. Its full-width dashboard can either display a digital interface or revert to a veneered wood surface. A central 'Mechanical Marvel" device blends mechanical design with digital functionality, displaying information such as battery charge status and direction of travel while also serving as a visual centrepiece. Does it preview an upcoming Bentley? The EXP 15 will not be produced and is not a direct preview of Bentley's first electric model expected in 2026. Instead, it serves as a design study, offering clues to how future Bentleys might combine heritage-inspired proportions with modern technology. After its California debut, where it was displayed alongside the original 'Blue Train" coupé, the EXP 15 has returned to Bentley's design studio in Crewe. There, it will continue to influence the development of Bentley's next generation of grand tourers. Check out Upcoming Cars in India 2025, Best SUVs in India. First Published Date:

Bihar Cabinet clears construction of new five-star hotels in renewed tourist push
The Bihar Cabinet on Tuesday gave clearance for the construction of two hotels in Rajgir and one five-star resort in Vaishali as part of efforts to boost tourism in the state. The Cabinet also decided to double the annual awards for teachers, from Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000. After the Cabinet meeting, Additional Chief Secretary (Cabinet department) S Siddharth told reporters, 'The government has given the nod to the tourism department's proposal to construct two hotels on 10 acres of land available near the Mela Ground in Rajgir and a five-star hotel at the 10 acres of land near Buddha Samyak Darshan-cum-memorial and stupa in Vaishali.' The ACS said the two hotels and resort would be constructed and operated under the provisions of the Infrastructure Development Enabling (Amendment) Act, 2023. The government, he said, would provide land on lease to private developers, who will carry out the construction of the hotels on the said land. The ACS said the Cabinet also doubled the annual award for primary, secondary, high school and higher-secondary teachers from Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000. 'Earlier, barely one or two teachers would get the award, but last year, 42 teachers got the award. We have not put a cap on the number of awardees,' he said. To give a further boost to the students, the state government has decided to keep the fees for filling the forms for the prelims of the Bihar Public Service Commission, the Bihar Staff Selection Commission, the Bihar Technical Service Commission, the Bihar Police Sub-Ordinate Commission, and Central Constable Selection Board examinations to Rs 100. Those writing the mains will not have to pay any fees.

8,700% Jump In Hours: Little-Known Australian Stock Turns Market Into A Gold Rush
Analysts calculated that an investment of around $11,000 at the start of the rally would have been worth close to $1 million by the end of the day Investors and market watchers were left stunned on Monday after a little-known Australian mining company, Kaili Resources, saw its stock price explode by an unprecedented 8,700% in a single trading session. The rally was so dramatic that the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) was forced to halt trading in the company's shares to contain the frenzy. According to market data, Kaili Resources' stock surged from 36 cents to a peak of $3.18, hitting its highest level in 52 weeks. For perspective, the company's 52-week low had been just $0.006, making Monday's performance one of the most extraordinary price swings in the exchange's recent history. The sudden boom instantly turned modest investments into staggering sums. Analysts calculated that an investment of around $11,000 at the start of the rally would have been worth close to $1 million by the end of the day. The trigger behind the meteoric rise was an announcement made on August 15, in which Kaili Resources confirmed it had secured government approval to drill for rare earth minerals in South Australia's limestone coast region. The company plans to carry out exploration across three separate sites. Rare earth metals, crucial in the manufacture of high-end technology and electric vehicles, have been in rising demand globally, making the announcement a magnet for investors. The surge, however, raised immediate concerns about speculative trading. On August 18, the company itself wrote to the exchange requesting a suspension of its stock, citing the need to issue a formal clarification over the unusual trading activity. ASX later confirmed that trading would remain suspended until Wednesday, August 20, 2025. Market experts have cautioned that while such eye-popping returns draw headlines, the risks in sudden spikes are equally steep. 'When a stock multiplies this fast without fundamental financial backing, it often attracts speculative bubbles that can burst quickly," one analyst told Australian media. For now, Kaili Resources' overnight transformation has become one of the most talked-about stories in Australia's financial markets, sparking both excitement and unease among investors worldwide.
