England pick Pope over Bethell at number three for first Test against India

England named their team for the first Test of the five-match series against India as they retained Ollie Pope at the expense of Jacob Bethell while Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse return to the team for the match that begins on Friday at Headingley.
Bethell had impressed for England in his debut series against New Zealand when he scored three half centuries, including a knock of 96, when batting at number three.
But vice-captain Pope, who played as a middle-order batter in that series, is set to be promoted to number three after his knock of 171 in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe.
Bethell had missed the Test against Zimbabwe as he was playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League.
Meanwhile, all-rounder Woakes returns to the team for the first time since December while Carse, who has played five Tests for England in Pakistan and New Zealand, will get the opportunity to impress on home turf for the first time.

England bowl in 1st Test as India's Sudharsan makes debut

LEEDS: England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to field in the first Test against India at Headingley on Friday. With the match starting beneath sunny, blue skies and the pitch only showing a tinge of green, conditions appeared good for batting in the opening match of this five-Test series. But Stokes, explaining his decision to bowl first, said: 'Headingley is generally a good cricket wicket, we have had some good games here over the years so we will look to use the early conditions and get a bit out of it (the pitch).' England had already named their side, making two changes to the team that beat Zimbabwe by an innings inside three days at Trent Bridge. Experienced paceman Chris Woakes returns in place of the injured Gus Atkinson and fast bowler Brydon Carse makes his home debut. India gave a Test debut to Sai Sudharsan, listed to come in at number three with new captain Shubman Gill slotting in at number four. India are bidding for just a third Test series win in England following triumphs in 1971, 1986 and 2007, with Gill saying: 'Preparation has been amazing, I think all the boys are feeling in a good space mentally and physically.' Nayeem Hasan takes five wickets to halt Sri Lanka charge in Bangladesh Test This match, the first of five Tests in seven weeks, marks the start of a new cycle in the World Test Championship after South Africa beat Australia in last week's final at Lord's. Both teams wore black armbands in memory of the victims of an Air India plane crash in the western city of Ahmedabad that killed all but one of 242 people on board. Gill's captaincy a blend of Rohit's ice and Kohli's fire, says Buttler

Shubman Gill's style of captaincy blends the fire of Virat Kohli with the ice-cool composure of Rohit Sharma but India's new test skipper will carve out his own identity as he leads them in the upcoming test series in England, Jos Buttler said on Tuesday. India named Gill as their new test captain in May, picking the 25-year-old top-order batter over pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah after Rohit quit the format. India have long recognised Gill's leadership qualities, previously naming him vice-captain in both white-ball formats, while he also had two seasons as skipper of Indian Premier League (IPL) side Gujarat Titans. 'He's a really impressive player and an impressive young man…,' Buttler, who played under Gill at Gujarat, said on the 'For the Love of Cricket' podcast. 'I feel like, on the field he's got a bit of fight about him — a bit of intensity, quite passionate. I think he'll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit. 'Kohli (was) that sort of real aggressive (character), really transformed the Indian team, in your face, up for the contest. Rohit a bit on the other side, a bit more laid back, very cool, calm, collected customer, but with that sort of fight. 'I feel like, from my time knowing Shubman so far, he'll be a bit in the middle. He's obviously learned from those two guys … but he'll be very much his own man.' Jasprit Bumrah told BCCI he did not want Test captaincy due to workload concerns India play England in a five-match test series starting on Friday at Headingley, and Buttler said Gill will be in the spotlight. 'Kohli is the king, Shubman is the prince — that's the narrative that they spin out there, and I feel that he's the coming man,' said Buttler, who stepped down as England's white-ball captain in February after their Champions Trophy exit. 'Stepping into that number four, it's big shoes, isn't it? Coming behind Virat, and Sachin Tendulkar before that as well. That's obviously a huge role.'
