Chicago native Pope Leo XIV spotted on broadcast from 2005 World Series

Yahoo09-05-2025

The 2025 papal conclave concluded on Thursday with the election of Cardinal Robert Prevost, who took the name Pope Leo XIV.
Prevost, who was born in Chicago, becomes the first pope born in the United States as well as the second from the Americas, joining his predecessor, Pope Francis. And with the election of the Chicago native, that means a Chicago sports fan has been tapped to lead one of the largest religious organizations in the world.
Not only is Leo a White Sox fan, as confirmed by his brother, but he was in attendance during the team's most recent World Series title in 2005.
Somehow, an eagle-eyed sleuth managed to catch a brief crowd shot featuring Leo at Rate Field during Game 1 against the Houston Astros, which Chicago won en route to a 4-0 sweep.
Truly an incredible find by whoever caught this clip. I don't know how you would have even begun to find this, but we're all better off thanks to this detective work.
Now, the only question that remains is how confident the new pope is in Caleb Williams and the Bears heading into 2025.

Tigers' Dillon Dingler, Zach McKinstry pull off ridiculous lucky grab in blowout win over White Sox

Zach McKinstry somehow managed to catch a foul ball that bounced off of Dillon Dingler's glove in the Tigers' blowout win over the White Sox on Monday night. () Dillon Dingler and Zach McKinstry teamed up for what could easily be the luckiest grab of the MLB season on Monday night. The Detroit Tigers teammates, in the fifth inning of their matchup with the Chicago White Sox, ran to try and catch a foul ball popped up by Joshua Palacios that was headed toward the dugout. Advertisement But as Dingler slid to try and make the grab, he just barely mistimed the catch. The ball bounced off his glove and back toward an unsuspecting McKinstry, who somehow managed to make the catch and complete the out. McKinstry could only stand there and laugh once he realized what he had done. Hey, whatever works. The play was just part of what ended up being a blowout win for the best team in Major League Baseball on Monday. The Tigers cruised to the 13-1 win over the White Sox, thanks in part to a huge showing from Kerry Carpenter. Carpenter hit three home runs in the contest, which made him the first Tigers player to hit three in a single game since 2016. He hit a solo shot in the first inning at Rate Field, and then followed it up with a two-run homer in the fourth inning. That second dinger put the Tigers up 8-0 at the time. Advertisement Then two innings later, Carpenter hit a third homer to center for good measure. White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. nearly robbed that one, but he couldn't quite climb up the outfield wall enough to reach the ball as it crossed over. The White Sox fell to 18-42 with the loss, which marked their seventh in their last eight games. The Tigers now sit at 40-21 on the year. They've lost just once in their last eight outings. While it's still early June, the Tigers are making an incredible early push in the American League. If Carpenter keeps it up, and they manage to keep pulling in ridiculous catches like they did on Monday night, there's no telling where the Tigers will end up in a few months.

(AP) — Manny Marin hit a two-out, three-run home run, and Andrew Fischer followed with a two-run shot in a seven-run third inning as No. 14 overall seed and defending-champion Tennessee spotted Wake Forest two runs before winning the Knoxville Regional 11-5 on Monday night. The Volunteers (46-17) travel to play No. 3 seed Arkansas (46-13) in a best-of-3 super regional with a berth in the College World Series on the line. Luke Costello had a one-out single off Tennessee starter AJ Russell in the second and Matt Conte hit a two-out home run to give the Demon Deacons a 2-0 lead. Wake Forest reliever Zach Johnston (2-2), who allowed just one run after entering in the third inning with the bases loaded and no outs, walked two in the fourth and left after allowing an RBI single to Reese Chapman that tied it at 2-all. Duncan Marsten entered and threw a wild first pitch to allow the go-ahead run to score. Levi Clark was hit by a pitch for the second time to put two runners on before Marin homered to right-center field from the ninth spot in the order. Fischer followed a single by Gavin Kilen with a shot to right for an 8-2 lead.
