Zumba dispute shows no signs of cooling down
The controversy surrounding the introduction of Zumba dance on government and aided school campuses in the State as an anti-drug measure appears to linger on with different Muslim organisations steadfastly opposing the initiative.
Muslim groups have been opposing the move by raising concerns about Zumba dance's moral and cultural implications for school campuses.
However, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), unlike other Muslim groups, has chosen a measured approach to the Zumba the controversy. The party is of the view that it must study the issue before commenting about it.
The Muslim League's cautious approach is reflected in its State general secretary P.M.A. Salam's comments, where he pointed out the need for the State government to address the concerns of all sections about the introduction of Zumba dance in schools.
While the IUML has not outrightly opposed Zumba, it has sought discussions and considerations of diverse perspectives before moving forward with the programme. The IUML is of the view that any programme should be implemented in a way acceptable to all sections.
While Muslim groups like the Samastha Kerala Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (SYS), Samastha Kerala Islam Matha Vidysbhyasa Board, and Wisdom Islamic Organisation are opposing Zumba due to moral and cultural concerns, others are questioning the programme's effectiveness. Moderate groups and individuals in the Muslim community are scrutinising the scientific basis of Zumba as a tool to combat drug abuse among students.
C. Mohammed Ajmal, an IIT Madras alumnus and education counsellor, contests the basic idea of the programme. 'Youngsters are turning to drugs in pursuit of pleasure, rather than as a stress-relief mechanism,' he said. In his view, setting and achieving long-term goals can help students discover more significant and rewarding experiences.
Wisdom Youth Movement vice president P.P. Naseef urged the government to listen to the concerns of the people who object to Zumba dance before imposing the programme. 'Taking everyone into confidence is always better,' said Dr. Naseef.
Meanwhile, the government has decided to proceed with Zumba despite the opposition from Muslim groups. According to Education Minister V. Sivankutty, student can participate in Zumba in their regular uniforms.
CPI(M) national secretary M.A. Baby has called upon the people not to mix religion in academics. He said religion should be kept away from public education in a secular country like India.
Unless the government finds common ground with protesters, campuses may witness a Zumba showdown when classes resume on Monday.

CM calls to remove ‘secular' & ‘socialist' from Preamble
Guwahati: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the state govt will request the Centre to delete the words "socialist" and "secular" from the Preamble of the Constitution as "these words are legacies of the Emergency" and those represent the Western concept contrary to Indian thought. The original Preamble, adopted on Nov 26, 1949, declared India as a "Sovereign Democratic Republic". The words "socialist" and "secular" were added through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment during the Emergency in 1976. During an event at BJP headquarters in Guwahati, after launching a book on Emergency, "The Emergency Diary" — a collection of first-person anecdotes from associates who worked with Narendra Modi during his time as an RSS pracharak — Sarma said it was not a result of any national or international crisis but a calculated political conspiracy by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi solely to protect her position. He emphasised that Indira Gandhi not only violated democratic principles but also undermined the very spirit of the Constitution by amending its Preamble, inserting the words 'socialist' and 'secular'. "The word secularism is not conceived in Indian context. Our concept is Sarva Dharma Sambhav — equal respect for all religions which is not neutral but positively aligned. We are a spiritual nation. The West concept is neutral. If we are neutral we cannot work for satras, temples and namghars. We cannot discuss Gita or the Vedas," he said. He added, "How can Himanta Biswa Sarma be secular? I am a hardcore Hindu. Smillary, how can a Muslim person be secular. He is a hardcore Muslim person." Sarma further said similarly socialism was never the economic concept of India. "Our concept was always antodoya (uplift of the marginalised) and sarvodaya (welfare of all). Therefore, the Government of India must remove the words 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Preamble and restore it to its original form as envisioned by the Constitution's architects, including Dr BR Ambedkar," Sarma said. "The way Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working to wipe out the legacy of colonial India, the same way we should try to wipe out the legacy of Emergency. Two important legacy of the emergency is insertion of the word secular and socialist in our constitution, which should be deleted," he said. Sarma said the Emergency remains a grim reminder of how fragile democracy can become if power is abused and stressed that such circumstances must never be allowed to recur in the future.

Azam Khan has only 3 options to get justice, says Akhilesh
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has said that jailed party veteran Azam Khan has only three options to get justice — change of govt in UP, court of law, and divine intervention. Akhilesh's reaction came after Azam's wife and former SP MP Tazeen Fatima in an apparent reference to the party leadership said she had no hope from anyone to secure her husband's release from jail. "Humein kisi se bhi nahi umeed hai … agar umeed hai to sirf Allah se (We don't have any hope from anyone … God is our only hope now)," an emotional Tazeen had told reporters after meeting her husband in jail on Thursday. She had added that Azam Khan (76) suffers from several ailments and needs better medical care in the jail. Asked to respond to Tazeen's statement, Akhilesh, too, sounded helpless. "Hum kis se kahen? (Whom do I go to?)," he told reporters on Friday, adding that under the present circumstances the veteran politician could get justice under three scenarios. "One: If there is a change of govt," Akhilesh said, suggesting that situation will change if SP forms govt after 2027 assembly polls. During his Rampur visit in Nov 2022, Akhilesh had announced that all false cases against Azam Khan would be withdrawn once SP forms govt. According to Akhilesh the other two scenarios under which Azam Khan can get justice was through the Court of Law and by the intervention of the Almighty. Azam, a founding member of the party and its prominent Muslim face for three decades, has been in jail since Oct 2023 and has over 89 criminal cases pending against him. This is not Azam's first stint in jail. He spent 27 months in jail before the Supreme Court granted him bail in May 2022. Most of the 89 criminal cases pending against Azam were lodged within the first two years of the BJP forming the government in UP in 2017. Tazeen Fatima and her son — disqualified SP MLA Abdullah Azam — too had been in jail in some cases and are currently out on bail. While SP has always maintained that Azam Khan has been implicated in false cases by Yogi govt, the party had ben accused of not standing by Azam Khan "as strongly as it should have had". During 2022 assembly polls, CM Yogi Adityanath had claimed that Akhilesh Yadav did not want Azam Khan to come out of jail as that would put SP chief's position in danger. During his stint in BSP, now Congress MP from Saharanpur, Imran Masood, had said that only SP was to be blamed for Azam Khan's troubles. The SP, on the other hand, insists that it has always stood by Azam's family. Party functionaries cite Akhilesh Yadav leading a 1km cycle rally in Rampur on March 12, 2021 to highlight the plight of Azam Khan; visits by Akhilesh Yadav and Shivpal Yadav to Azam in jail, and party functionaries submitting memorandum with UP governor, raising the issue in the Assembly as some of the initiatives taken by the party and its leadership to express their solidarity with the veteran leader. Senior functionaries claim that the party leadership had a role in senior lawyer Kapil Sibal pleading Azam Khan's case before the Supreme Court in May 2022. Sibal had put up some strong arguments and the SC granted bail to Azam. In May 2022, Sibal contested the Rajya Sabha elections as an independent candidate. He was supported by the SP and won the seat. Akilesh Yadav and party's principal general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav had accompanied Sibal during filing of his nomination papers.

Accept preamble values, 90% of problems will be resolved, says Fadnavis
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Saturday said 90 per cent of the country's problems will be resolved forever if the values of the Constitution and its preamble are accepted. Addressing an event in Nagpur, Fadnavis said since the essence of the Constitution is reflected in its preamble, the state government has decided that the preamble should reach students in all schools and colleges during the 'Amrit Mahotsav' of the Constitution. 'If we accept the values of the constitution and its preamble, 90 per cent of the country's will be resolved forever. Therefore, the constitution and preamble are of utmost importance,' he said at the launch of the Constitution Preamble park and unveiling of BR Ambedkar's statue at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College of Law in Nagpur. Fadnavis's Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday that 'socialism' and 'secularism' were Western concepts, and these words have no place in Indian civilisation. Saying these words should be struck down from the Constitution, he said, 'How can I be secular? I am a hardcore Hindu. A Muslim person is a hardcore Muslim person. How can he be secular?' He was speaking after launching in Assam a book titled 'The Emergency Diaries: Years That Forged a Leader' which is based on first person anecdotes from associates who worked with Narendra Modi, then a young RSS pracharak, and used other archival material. The book chronicles the 1975-77 Emergency era and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's role in the 'resistance movement'. Sarma maintained that the Indian concept of secularism is not about being neutral, but it is about being 'positively aligned'. The word 'secularism' was inserted by people who view it from the Western angle, and it needed to be struck off from the Preamble, Sarma added. The Assam Chief Minister also claimed that the Western concept of socialism was also imposed by Gandhi. Indian economic principle was based on 'trustee-ship' and helping the marginalised. 'The BJP didn't have to even demolish this concept of socialism. PV Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh did it for the Congress,' he said. (With PTI inputs)
