Jenson Brooksby beats Frances Tiafoe in Houston to win his first ATP Tour title
HOUSTON (AP) — Qualifier Jenson Brooksby earned his first ATP Tour title Sunday by beating Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 6-2 in the final of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship.
Brooksby, a 24-year-old from California, saved five match points during the tournament, including one in his semifinal victory over top-seeded Tommy Paul. Brooksby eliminated the three highest-seeded men in the field, including No. 2 Tiafoe and No. 3 Alejandro Tabilo.
Ranked outside the top 500 entering the event in Houston, Brooksby is expected to climb inside the top 175 in Monday's ATP rankings. He is the first American man to win an ATP singles trophy this season and the first qualifier to win this tournament since Fernando Gonzalez of Chile in 2000.
Brooksby returned to the tour at the Australian Open in January after a two-year absence that included a pair of wrist operations, a shoulder injury, a coaching change and a suspension related to missed doping tests.
He spoke to The Associated Press in December about being diagnosed as autistic as a child, the first time he had discussed the subject publicly.

(AP) — Kostas Zaltos won the NCAA hammer throw and fellow Greek thrower Angelos Mantzouranis was second to help Minnesota take the Day 1 lead at the outdoor track and field championships Wednesday. Zaltos and Mantzouranis are the first teammates to go 1-2 in the NCAA hammer throw since Virginia Tech did it in 2011. Zaltos won with a throw of 256 feet, 2 inches in the fourth round to become the first Minnesota outdoor champion since 2018 and just the third since 1971. Mantzouranis, who finished third as a freshman last year, had a personal-best 252-6. Last year, Samuel became the first male in school history to win an NCAA outdoor 5,000 or 10,000 title. Minnesota sits atop the team standings with 23 points, with New Mexico and Florida tied for second at 18. Jason Swarens of Wisconsin landed a personal-best 69-8 on his final toss to win the shot put and deny Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan his fourth straight NCAA title. Swarens became the first Badger male to win a national title in the shot put and the first male thrower to win a NCAA title since Michael Lihrman won consecutive indoor weight throw titles in 2014 and '15. Aleksandr Solovev broke his own school record with a clearance of 18-11 1/2 to become the pole vault champion for Texas A&M. Giants rally again to beat lowly Rockies 10-7 for 7th straight win
DENVER (AP) — Mike Yastrzemski's two-run double in the eighth inning keyed another San Francisco rally, and the Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 10-7 on Wednesday night for their seventh straight victory. Willy Adames homered and drove in three early runs for the Giants, but they trailed 6-3 entering the eighth before coming back against reliever Tyler Kinley (0-3). Adames, Heliot Ramos and Dominic Smith singled to load the bases with one out, and Casey Schmitt walked to bring in a run. Yastrzemski then lined a double off the right-center wall to tie it. Tyler Fitzgerald laid down a bunt against Zach Agnos, and Schmitt slid around the tag of catcher Hunter Goodman with the go-ahead run. Schmitt was initially ruled out but the call was overturned following a replay review. YSU senior finishes Top-10 at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
EUGENE, Oregon (WKBN) – YSU senior Tye Hunt finished 10th in the long jump at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday. Hunt's best jump measured 7.77m at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. University of Florida senior and three-time First Team All-American Malcolm Clemons won the event with a jump of 8.04m on his first attempt to win his first national title. Hunt was one of 24 finalists in the country to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He posted a season-best 7.92m at the Virginia Challenge in April. He also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships last year and finished in ninth place to earn All-American honors. Hunt's teammate Hunter Christopher will compete in the 5,000m NCAA finals on Friday.
