Bureaucratic knots, heritage hurdles stall Karnataka's Rs 100 crore tourism push

Time of Indiaa day ago
Bengaluru: Despite the Centre sanctioning nearly Rs 100 crore under its Swadesh Darshan scheme to bolster tourism infrastructure in Karnataka, the state govt is struggling to translate plans into action due to a mixture of technical bottlenecks and political delays.
Earlier this week, Union tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat told the Lok Sabha that projects for Udupi and Bidar districts had been approved under the Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD), a component of Swadesh Darshan. However, he added, "No project at these destinations has been sanctioned, and the govt of Karnataka has been advised to obtain necessary clearances." The minister was responding to a query from Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Kota Shrinivas Poojary.
While the Centre has given its nod in principle, the projects await final approvals due to objections raised by other central departments. Tourism director KV Rajendra told TOI that although detailed proposals have been submitted, regulatory hurdles remain.

"The state govt prepared a plan for a 12km cycle lane along the entire Udupi coast and an experience centre and other tourism-boosting structures in the middle of Bidar fort," said Rajendra.

"But we have run into queries from the ministry of environment, forests and climate change (MoEF) over coastal regulation zone (CRZ) and National Monument Authority (NMA) under the Archaeological Survey of India for Udupi and Bidar projects," he said.
"While MoEF has sought a map of 1:4000 to be prepared for CRZ clearances, the NMA considers the location as too sensitive for fresh structures."
The state has now roped in National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management to prepare the CRZ map for the Udupi project.
"We are in talks with both central agencies and are trying to convince them," Rajendra said. "For the Bidar fort development project, the govt is trying to persuade the Centre to consider its proposal."
Also, two flagship tourism initiatives proposed in Mysuru under Swadesh Darshan 2.0 are entangled in political limbo. Department sources said a Rs 2.7 crore plan to create a 'tonga ride heritage experience zone' and an 'ecological experience zone' are still awaiting the chief minister's approval.
"Since it is the CM's home district, we are waiting for him to lay the foundation stone for the two projects," an official said.
The heritage tonga ride aims to recreate royal-era charm by setting up five carriage stations that will ferry tourists around Mysuru Palace. The ecological experience is designed to complement the Mysuru zoo with themed installations and green trails.

Bengaluru Metro's Yellow Line brings cheer to techies wrestling road traffic to Electronics City

Bengaluru: For the city's traffic-weary commuters, particularly those in the tech hubs, this was a Monday morning with a difference. There was a different kind of a rush, and the buzz in the air was unmistakable. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now No, for a change, the rush and the buzz were not on or about road traffic, but on the platforms. The platforms at stations on the newly inaugurated Yellow Line of , to be precise. From the moment the first train rolled out of RV Road Interchange, the excitement was quite palpable as commuters in this part of the city had a train to catch — junking, for once, the thought of having to negotiate a nightmare called rush-hour traffic. When TOI visited RV Road (one of the terminal stations on Yellow Line) in the early hours, there were many commuters, with some capturing their first Yellow Line ride on their mobile phones. On the train, there were those hunting for a seat, perhaps to catch a quick nap on the 35-minute glide to Bommasandra (the last stop). By 8am, at Silk Board, the train had no vacant seats left. From RV Road, it was a seven-minute ride to BTM Layout, 11 minutes to Silk Board, 25 minutes to Electronics City, and 34 minutes to the terminal at Bommsandra. Electronics City saw the highest footfall as hundreds of professionals swapped road chaos for a smooth, signal-free Metro ride. And it was not just commuters to Electronics City who were all smiles. The Yellow Line attracted even those living in the southern fringes of the city, who need to travel to Whitefield daily for work. With the fare capped at Rs 90 over 45 stations from Electronics City to Whitefield — with two changes — the Yellow Line is already proving to be a game changer. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Fourth rake by next week However, despite the obvious advantages of the Yellow Line, many passengers said the 25-minute wait for a train was a major dampener and hoped BMRCL would expedite induction of more rakes to shorten the wait time. At present, BMRCL is operating services on the Yellow Line with three rakes. A fourth is expected to arrive next week. A BMRCL official said: "Heavy rain along the Andhra-Karnataka border has delayed arrival of the rake." By March 2026, the Yellow Line is expected to have 15 trainsets running at a frequency of five minutes during peak hours and eight minutes during non-peak hours, BMRCL sources revealed. Need for platform doors The increased wait time for trains on Yellow Line had a ripple effect in terms of crowding at RV Road station. With the Green Line now operating at four to eight-minute intervals, passengers getting off those trains now must wait for nearly 20 minutes before they can get on to a Yellow Line train. No wonder Metro station staff had a tough time managing the crowd at R V Road. In view of this, Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya, who travelled on the Yellow Line on Monday, urged BMRCL to install platform screen-doors at R V Road as a safety measure.

Cool comfort worth the extra 100, say passengers on board state's first AC local

Kolkata: Suburban commuters on board the maiden AC EMU Ranaghat-Sealdah train were ecstatic to experience the much-awaited service on the first day of the week. The feelings were mixed when it came to coughing up Rs 120 for the ride from Ranaghat to Sealdah. While some seemed sensitive about paying Rs 100 more for a journey that otherwise costs Rs 20 in non-AC rakes, others said the cool comfort and the superior travel justified the fare. A monthly ticket costs Rs 2,430. The one-way fare ranges from Rs 35 to Rs 120 depending on the distance travelled. The train was flagged off with much fanfare from Sealdah on Sunday. Commercial services started at 8.29 am on Monday. The inaugural commercial service was fairly crowded, with several passengers standing. But there was enough legroom, unlike the non-AC local trains. Ranaghat resident Dilip Ghosh, who works in Khadi Bhavan on CR Avenue, was smiling as he looked around the ICF-made rake, from the AC vent over the seat, noting the time as the automatic doors closed and the train chugged out of Ranaghat station. "This is like travelling on a metro train. We are covering 90 km in AC comfort and saving time as well. It would have taken around Rs 1,000 for the same ride on a hired car and taken me at least two-and-a-half hours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo I shall reach Sealdah station at 10.10 am. "I shall try to catch the return train at 6.50 pm so I can be home by 8.45 pm (the Down train reaches Ranaghat at 8.32 pm)," he added. "I don't know...," said Balmiki Ray, a passenger who took the train from Khardah. "I would have paid Rs 5 for the same journey. Today I bought a ticket to Sealdah for Rs 60. The monthly passes will be a bit cheaper. But I wonder if it makes sense to increase my daily commuting expense 12 times for this comfort," the worker employed with a shop at Bagri Market said. Biplab Mondol, who boarded the train from Chakdah, echoed: "Today I paid Rs 105 because I was curious about the facility. The monthly ticket will cost me Rs 2,125. It's difficult to make a call when the daily commuting by non-AC train costs barely Rs 10," Mondol said. Arati Saha, a schoolteacher from Krishnanagar, insisted: "This is the ultimate comfort and safety. Two reserved coaches for ladies, that, too, air-conditioned! Only two rides may seem tokenistic, but this is certainly a significant start." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
