Comparing area private and public school test scores: 5 key takeaways from our reporting
Parents now have unprecedented school choice but limited information to help them make that choice.
Our education reporter Eileen McClory is working to help with that with her recent analysis comparing private and public school proficiency scores.

1. Some background: Private school vouchers now cost the state of Ohio about $1 billion a year.
2. Our analysis: Our reporters spent months gathering and analyzing datasets from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce and talking to experts to create the best comparison available to parents of private and public schools. Read about how and why we did our analysis here.
3. Key finding: Of the 17 private schools located in the lowest performing local school districts, all but one private school outscored the public school districtwide average in English Language Arts (ELA) and math.
4. Other key finding: In higher-performing districts — some of which lose a large number of kids to private schools — only one of the nine private schools outscored the public districts in ELA and math.

Independent Michigan gubernatorial candidate Mike Duggan raises $3.2M in 6 months
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said Friday his independent Michigan gubernatorial campaign brought in more than $3.2 million over the past six months and has more than $2.3 million cash on hand. According to the Duggan campaign, more than 93 percent of its donations came from Michigan. Duggan's campaign manager Ed Duggan also noted that the campaign has raised nearly $1.4 million over the past 30 days alone. 'As an Independent campaign, we can't rely on party infrastructure for our fundraising. We had to build everything from the ground up,' Ed Duggan said in a statement. 'Our numbers are a sign of the incredible grassroots energy we're feeling on the campaign trail. We couldn't be more grateful for all our supporters who made this possible.' Mike Duggan, who was elected mayor as a Democrat, launched his Independent bid for governor in December. The mayor's latest fundraising numbers come a day after Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D), the front-runner in the Democratic primary, announced her campaign raised more than $3.5 million since its launch in January and has more than $2.4 million in the bank. Benson's and Duggan's hauls are both more than the $1.5 million Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), who is term-limited, raised at this point in 2017 after announcing her first gubernatorial bid in January of that year. In this year's Democratic primary, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II's campaign said he raised more than $750,000, while former Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said his campaign has raised more than $1 million. Gilchrist jumped into the primary in March, and Swanson announced his bid in February. On the Republican side, former state Attorney General Mike Cox (R), who jumped into the race in April, said his campaign has raised $2.4 million and has $1.9 million in the bank. Rep. San Diego artist turns curbs into stunning street art masterpieces
(FOX 5/KUSI) — 'When most people think about curb painting, they just think of simple numbers,' said Antonio Lopez, 'We want to take it to a different level.' A concrete canvas for the San Diego Curb Doctor. 'My inspiration is typically seeing the Sports teams,' continued Lopez. 'I want to be known as a quality curb painter.' Starting in February 2024, Antonio Lopez began by creating stencils and posting them to social media. Now with more than 5,000 followers, the 27-year-old says business is booming. 'Each category of art is different,' he said. 'We really wanted to focus on something that isn't too saturated yet. Curbs are a big thing; you can always add different kinds of logos, different colors. That's where I take inspiration from.' With prices ranging from $125 to $175, each curb has its own unique design. 'It's different compared to traditional painting on canvas,' continued Lopez.
