Jokes, laughs & skits: Kolkata cracks up at a comedy night

Time of India15-05-2025

It was an evening of roaring laughter and unfiltered fun as Kolkata hosted its inaugural Comedy Night Live on May 7 at a city auditorium. The stage buzzed with energy as host
Vibhor Chaudhary
steered a vibrant line-up — ranging from spot-on mimicry and quick-fire skits to a no-holds-barred celebrity roast. Comedy veterans
Ali Asgar
and
Dr Sanket Bhosale
brought the laughs, joined by the dynamic duo
Bakhtiyar and Tannaz Irani
, and the ever-animated
Chinki Minki
. The night hit a high note with a bold roast of actor-politician
Nussrat Jahan
, who not only took the jabs in stride but threw in a few zingers of her own.
The Irani diaries
The comedy skit by Bakhtiyar & Tannaz Irani was more than just jokes — it was a walk through their journey together. 'Our skit tonight is our story,' said Bakhtiyar. 'It all began in 2005. What you see here is us — no filters.' The couple's performance traced key moments from their personal and professional life, peppered with sharp humour, inside jokes, and Bollywood-style spoofs. Tannaz, moved by the warm reception, added, 'This was our first show here and we may never forget you guys.'

Even Kolkata couldn't tell Chinki from Minki
The twin entertainers brought their trademark chaos and comic timing to the stage, instantly connecting with the crowd. At one point, the confusion was real—even Kolkata couldn't figure out who was Chinki and who was Minki. But the duo leaned into it, teasing the audience while delivering punchlines in rapid fire.
Mimicry masterclass
'Bangla khub mishti,' said Dr Sanket Bhosale, before launching into a medley of spot-on Bollywood impressions. From Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Pankaj Tripathi to Udit Narayan and Salman Khan, each voice came alive on stage, earning rounds of applause and laughs from the crowd.
Ali Asgar's special connect with the crowd
Ali Asgar barely stayed on stage — he spent most of his time engaging with the audience, dancing, joking, and singing along to Laila Main Laila that played in the background. He kept things breezy, but ended on a heartfelt note with a tribute to the Indian Army. 'I have full faith in our line of defence,' he said, ending his set with a rousing 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai!'
Nussrat Jahan gets roasted (and roasts right back)
The final segment saw Nussrat Jahan as the centre of a playful roast. Taking every jab with good humour, she fired back with her own quips. 'For the first time, I've been brought to a show with so much love… just to be roasted,' she joked.

'Sitaare Zameen Par': Aamir Khan defends theatres over OTT releases; says, 'I believe in my audience'

Bollywood actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan is standing firm on his belief in the power of cinema halls. His upcoming film 'Sitaare Zameen Par' will be released in theatres in a few days, with no plans to drop it on any OTT platform anytime soon. In a chat with News18 Showsha, the actor opened up about why the film is strictly for cinemas and how he feels the OTT trend is hurting the theatre business. 'I don't know any business where you offer your product, and if someone doesn't buy it, you tell them—don't worry, I'll drop it at your house for free in eight weeks,' he said, speaking about how quickly films are being made available online. 'It doesn't make sense to me. That's the reason many films aren't doing well in theatres.' Theatres vs OTT: Aamir takes a strong stand Aamir believes that good films should be watched on the big screen and not on a phone or laptop at home. He said the trend of quick OTT releases is damaging theatre culture. According to him, this has created a 'famine and feast' situation — either a film becomes a big hit or it fails completely. 'I believe in theatres. I believe in my audience. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 夢の農場を作り上げよう アドベンチャーゲーム Undo If you make a good film, people will come to watch it on the big screen.' For Aamir, the experience of watching a film in a cinema hall is special, and he wants to keep that feeling alive with 'Sitaare Zameen Par'. OTT can't fix a bad film, says Aamir When asked about his last film 'Laal Singh Chaddha', which received better reviews on OTT after a slow run in theatres, Aamir didn't agree with the idea that streaming can change people's minds, 'If someone doesn't enjoy a film in theatres, they won't suddenly like it at home. Your opinion of the film doesn't change just because of where you watch it.' He also mentioned that high ticket prices and expensive food in multiplexes can push audiences to wait for films to come online. Still, he's not letting that affect his creative decisions. What is 'Sitaare Zameen Par' all about? 'Sitaare Zameen Par' is a sports comedy drama directed by R. S. Prasanna. It is produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. The film stars Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh and is described as a spiritual follow-up to Aamir's 2007 film 'Taare Zameen Par'. The film also marks the Hindi film debut of Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra and Simran Mangeshkar — fresh faces Aamir is excited to introduce to the audience. MSEDCL Marks 20th Anniversary With ‘Zero Accident' Campaign, Cultural Fest

1 2 3 Nagpur: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) celebrated its 20th anniversary with enthusiasm and active participation from employees and their families. Organised by the Nagpur Circle, the celebrations took on a family-centric atmosphere as regular and outsourced staff, engineers, officers, and their relatives came together to commemorate the milestone. Guided by Nagpur Circle's chief engineer Dilip Dodke, the week leading up to the anniversary, from June 1 to 6, was observed as Electricity Safety Week. Based on the theme 'Zero Accidents in MSEDCL, Zero Accidents in Maharashtra', a wide-reaching awareness campaign was conducted across Nagpur and Wardha districts. The week featured marathons, rallies, painting and essay competitions, and outreach visits to residential societies where safety practices related to electricity use and distribution were discussed. The initiative emphasised consumer and employee safety as its core message. The concluding ceremony and main anniversary event in Nagpur and Wardha became memorable celebrations, blending recognition and entertainment. The programme commenced with a tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his 351st coronation anniversary, followed by a documentary tracing MSEDCL's 20-year journey. The film included congratulatory messages from chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and managing director Lokesh Chandra, along with guidance on electrical safety. The event also recognised key contributions within the organisation. Substations at Dhapewada (Saoner Division) and Mohgaon, Dongargaon, Nildoh, and Sonegaon (Butibori Division) were awarded ISO certifications, and the respective engineers, technicians, and outsourced staff were felicitated. Winners of the safety week's painting and essay contests were also awarded. The ceremony was attended by director (customer relations) Gauri Chandrayaan, poet and jury member Loknath Yashwant, superintending engineers Amit Paranjape and Sanjay Wakde, along with a large number of staff and family members. A highlight of the celebration was an entertainment night held at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Convention Center on Kamptee Road. TV artist Ajit Koshti's solo comedy act 'Hasyarang' drew waves of laughter from the audience, while a live performance by the Seven Notes Orchestra, featuring popular Hindi and Marathi songs, provided a perfect end to the anniversary festivities.
