Kilmore Quay Festival set to mark 40 years of seafood celebration on the Wexford coast
This year's festival runs from Thursday, July 10, to Sunday, July 13, and features all manner of fun and games for all the family. The clue being in the name, the delicious fresh produce that arrives at the quay wall in Kilmore off the boats takes centre stage, but there's plenty more on besides such as a Red Moon Creative Arts Theatre summer camp, sand castle competitions, beach games, paddle boarding, exhibitions, lectures, live music and much more.
The fun will really get under way on Thursday, July 10, at 7 p.m. with the festival parade, followed by the official opening at the marina at 7.30 p.m.
Friday's highlights include an artisan food and craft fair, a fish market with cookery demos and a festival lecture with local naturalist Jim Hurley. There will also be music with DJ Bodie and The Wires in the marina area from early evening.
Saturday will see more seafood platters and puppet theatre from Red Moon at the Stella Maris Centre, with more open air music in the marina area from early evening and a Teddy Bears' Picnic for the little ones from 12 noon at the playground. There will also be cookery demonstrations with the likes of Derry Clarke, Bernie Doyle, Paul Hynes, Toddy Lambden, Brian O'Driscoll and Warren Gillen, as well as wine tasting with Bill Kelly of Kelly's Resort Hotel.
Sunday will have sunrise yoga from 8 a.m., more paddleboarding and surfing, a run, the continuation of the artisan food and craft fair, a guided walk with Jim Hurley at Ballyteigue Burrow from 2 p.m. and music from 2 p.m. at the marina area with DJ Bodie, The Submersibles and Rince, Ceol agus Craic.

Florida reports 11 cases, 4 deaths from flesh-eating disease
Florida has reported [11 infections and four deaths]( from Vibrio vulnificus, also known as the flesh-eating disease, [in 2025]( V. vulnificus infections are most prevalent during summer, when warmer water temperatures help the bacteria flourish. The risk of infection is even higher following a storm in coastal regions like Florida, because storm surge can help the bacteria spread. How do flesh-eating infections occur? Individuals can become infected through open wounds exposed to contaminated water or by consuming undercooked seafood. Higher-risk individuals include people with compromised immune systems, those with liver disease, or anyone with an open wound. Health officials urge people to avoid swimming or wading in floodwaters. If any signs of infection appear, seek immediate medical attention. Hurricanes, heatwaves cause unusual spike in cases In 2024, Hurricanes Helene and Milton brought heavy rain and storm surge to the region, causing an unusual spike in V. vulnificus infections. The storms caused saltwater and freshwater to mix, creating an abundance of the warm, brackish saltwater V. vulnificus thrives in. By the end of the year, 82 infections and 19 deaths were recorded. In the summer of 2023, a heatwave and elevated sea surface temperatures caused 11 cases of severe flesh-eating infections in North Carolina, Connecticut, and New York. Five people died.
