US stock futures lower after Trump says tariffs start Aug. 1

Yahoo07-07-2025
U.S. stock futures are lower after oil prices slid on an unexpectedly large supply increase from oil producing countries and President Donald Trump's confirmation that tariffs are set to go into effect Aug. 1, extending the original deadline of July 9.
At 6:10 a.m. ET, futures linked to the blue-chip Dow were at 0.02%, while broad S&P 500 futures slipped-0.28% and tech-heavy Nasdaq futures fell-0.44%.
Investors had expected Trump's reciprocal tariffs would go into effect on July 9 for nations that didn't yet strike a trade deal with the U.S., but over the weekend Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the date is now Aug. 1. White House officials suggested more trade deals will be finalized this week.
"The policy of 'strategic uncertainty' has revealed, with certainty, that the administration is fearful of its own threats," said Mike O'Rourke, chief market strategist at JonesTrading. "This backpedaling reinforces the market's expectation that the administration's true policy remains one of 'closet capitulation.'"
Separately, oil prices slid after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies agreed to increase production by 548,000 barrels a day in August. That's larger than the 411,000 monthly increase in production in May, June and July and more than analysts' had expected. Additionally, the countries will consider adding another roughly 548,000 barrels a day in September at the next meeting on Aug. 3, according to Bloomberg, citing delegates who asked not to be identified.
Tesla shares may be in the spotlight as tensions between chief executive Elon Musk and Trump heat up again. Musk said on social media he started the "America Party" aimed at winning a handful of Senate seats and House districts that could serve as the "deciding vote" on"contentious laws," given the "razor-thin legislative margins" in Congress. Trump responded on social media by saying Musk had gone "completely off the rails," suggesting the third party was in response to Musk being angry because the spending bill eliminated incentives to buy electric cars.
Amazon Prime Day is slated to begin July 8.
Over the weekend, an unknown individual or entity moved $8 billion worth of crypto after holding the digital assests for 14 years and originally bought for less than $210,000, nedia reports said. The transfer of 80,000 bitcoin reporteldy came from eight dormant wallets.

Redfin Survey: One in Five House Hunters Is Willing to Compromise Personal Safety to Afford a Home

Personal safety is the number-one must-have on homebuyers' checklists, though 22% say they're willing to compromise on it for affordability SEATTLE, August 13, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Roughly one in five (22%) homebuyers are willing to compromise personal safety to afford a home, according to a new survey, commissioned by Redfin, the real estate brokerage powered by Rocket. Shop Top Mortgage Rates Your Path to Homeownership A quicker path to financial freedom Personalized rates in minutes Still, personal safety is the top non-negotiable for homebuyers, with 78% calling it a "must-have." It's followed by two other safety-related location features: a low rate of crime, which 74% consider a must-have, and a low risk of natural disaster, which 68% have on their list of non-negotiables. Next is access to grocery stores, which two-thirds of homebuyers are unwilling to compromise on. Redfin asked prospective homebuyers about non-negotiables versus negotiables because it's difficult to afford a home in today's housing market. The median U.S. home-sale price has increased more than 40% since before the pandemic, and mortgage rates are roughly double pre-pandemic and early-pandemic days. A recent Redfin analysis found that homebuyers must earn $112,000 to afford the median-priced U.S. home, roughly $25,000 more than the typical U.S. household earns. While affordability has started improving in some major metros, buying a home is still a reach for many Americans. "Prices are starting to come down, but buyers—especially first-timers—are still battling with affordability," said Katie Shook, a Redfin Premier agent in Phoenix. "Buyers want a home that fits their practical needs: They're looking for a bedroom for every kid, space to work from home or an easy commute, things like that. Some more luxurious features, like a fully finished backyard with a pool or a recently renovated kitchen, aren't as valuable to buyers as they used to be. People might want those things, but they aren't willing to—or can't—pay more for them." It's worth noting that in many parts of the country, the housing market has shifted firmly in buyers' favor. Buyers may be able to negotiate down the sale price, or get concessions like a mortgage-rate buydown or closing costs, from a seller that could help them afford some nice-to-have features in addition to must-have features. "Sellers know it's taking longer to sell and that they can't expect multiple offers like they would have gotten a few years ago," Shook said. "Today, the definition of a win is selling. So for buyers who see a home they really want, it's worth a try to negotiate with the seller." For House Hunters With Kids, Highly Rated Schools Are Important—But Not As Important As Space With the school year coming up, Redfin also looked at survey respondents with kids, and whether they're willing to compromise on living near highly rated schools. Two in five (41%) of the respondents with children living at home say they're willing to compromise on highly rated schools to afford a house, while 59% consider highly rated schools a must-have. All in all, highly rated schools fall smack in the middle in terms of must-haves for people with kids. Survey respondents with children living at home were more likely to rate features of the home itself—including the number of bedrooms, indoor space and outdoor space—as must-haves than highly rated schools. They were less likely to say commute time, proximity to restaurants, and several neighborhood characteristics are must-haves. U.S. FACTORY PURCHASES SLOWED SHARPLY IN JULY, DRIVING GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN SLOWDOWN: GEP GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN VOLATILITY INDEX

U.S. manufacturers slash purchases after front-loading inventories during the 'tariff pause' Asia factories slow, driven by Japan, South Korea and Taiwan manufacturers Europe's fragile recovery stalled in July as German growth weakened ahead of tariff agreements CLARK, N.J., Aug. 13, 2025 /CNW/ -- Global supply chain activity fell in July as U.S. manufacturers sharply tapered purchases of materials and components after building inventories in June ahead of the end of the 'tariff pause,' according to the GEP Global Supply Chain Volatility Index, a leading indicator tracking demand conditions, shortages, transportation costs, inventories, and backlogs based on a monthly survey of 27,000 businesses. The index dropped to -0.35 from -0.17 in June, signaling increased spare capacity worldwide. The U.S. was the main driver, with North America's index falling to -0.33 from -0.06. The reversal follows a surge in June when U.S. factories front-loaded orders to beat anticipated tariff changes. In July, U.S. manufacturers sharply tapered purchases of inputs — materials, components and commodities — signaling expectations of slowing demand going forward. "When we remove companies' front-loading inventories and rerouting goods to avoid tariffs, the underlying picture points to slowing manufacturing demand worldwide," said John Piatek, vice president, consulting, GEP. "The July data shows a clear pullback in orders, with U.S. manufacturers preparing for lower demand going forward." REGIONAL KEY FINDINGS Asian factory purchasing activity remains slightly below trend due to growing weakness in Japan and South Korea. Data was mostly collected prior to these two countries striking double-digit tariff agreements with the U.S. Taiwanese factories also saw an accelerated downturn, weighing on the broader region. Notably, after declining in the two previous months, China's factory buying volumes rose in July. Europe industrial recovery slipped: Its index dropped to -0.30 from 0.01. Germany's rebound slowed, highlighting the fragile nature of the continent's industrial recovery. U.K.: Index declined to -0.58, from -0.41, signaling that the U.K.'s supply chains continue to experience an elevated level of spare capacity. Interpreting the data:Index > 0, supply chain capacity is being stretched. The further above 0, the more stretched supply chains < 0, supply chain capacity is being underutilized. The further below 0, the more underutilized supply chains are. CATEGORY KEY FINDINGS INVENTORIES: Safety stockpiling eased, indicating limited concern over supply bottlenecks or price surges. LABOR & TRANSPORTATION: Staffing capacity and transportation costs were stable, with no signs of inflationary pressure from these sources. About the GEP Global Supply Chain Volatility Index The GEP Global Supply Chain Volatility Index is produced by S&P Global and GEP. It is derived from S&P Global's PMI® surveys, sent to companies in over 40 countries, totaling around 27,000 companies. The headline figure is a weighted sum of six sub-indices derived from PMI data, PMI Comments Trackers and PMI Commodity Price & Supply Indicators compiled by S&P Global. A value above 0 indicates that supply chain capacity is being stretched and supply chain volatility is increasing. The further above 0, the greater the extent to which capacity is being stretched. A value below 0 indicates that supply chain capacity is being underutilized, reducing supply chain volatility. The further below 0, the greater the extent to which capacity is being underutilized. A Supply Chain Volatility Index is also published at a regional level for Europe, Asia, North America and the U.K. For more information about the methodology, click here.
