Numbers that show Ferguson's depreciation at Brighton
Clearly, his time on the pitch has been curtailed by injuries, so anything looking at his goal and assist output over the past season would probably be unfair. For the record, though, six goals apiece in 2022-23 and 2023-24 were followed by just one last season. However, as the graph above shows, both his passing and shooting accuracy also dropped off last season - not the sign of a player who is maturing but rather hinting at one that is regressing. It could be argued his lack of minutes makes it harder for him to pick up the rhythm required to be in sync with his team-mates - but even in previous campaigns he was not starting every week under Roberto de Zerbi. And after all, those who make a splash as a teenager do not necessarily cut loose in the water until later in their career. Everyone progresses differently. For now, it looks more like that his rip-roaring start to life at Brighton established expectations that were unrealistic.Aspinall reckons a change of scenery could unlock his ability. If Brighton sell him, it will be someone else's opportunity to cash in on how that once frightening prospect ultimately turns out.

Joe Root and Harry Brook give England hope after Mohammed Siraj let-off
Chasing a massive 374 to take the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 3-1, the hosts reached lunch at 164 for three with their top two batters at the crease. Ben Duckett and stand-in captain Ollie Pope departed as India made inroads towards squaring the series 2-2, but a typically dependable 23 not out from Root and a counter-attacking unbeaten 38 by Brook left things in the balance. Brook hit four fours and two sixes in 30 balls before the break but was almost caught by Mohammed Siraj, who held on to a skier at fine leg before stepping over the boundary rope. Siraj had snatched the momentum with the last act on Saturday evening, bowling Zak Crawley with a clinical yorker, and was soon causing more problems for Duckett. He turned his overnight 34 into a fourth half-century of the series but never really settled in lasting 40 awkward minutes. He was beaten eight times, edging three deliveries and missing five more. Siraj was responsible for most of his troubles but it was Prasidh Krishna who got the rewards, coming on at the Pavilion End and striking lucky with his fourth ball as Duckett threw the kitchen sink at a drive. After seeing England fail to claim six catches in the third innings, KL Rahul showed them how it was done with a rock solid take at slip. Krishna, gamely filling the considerable boots of Jasprit Bumrah, came desperately close to pinning Root lbw for just three but saw his huge appeal rejected. Ball-tracking showed it was clipping leg stump, but not enough to overturn the decision. After an hour's play England had scraped together 37 runs, briefly accelerating as Pope hit three fours in an over off Krishna, including one classy on-drive. But that was the end of a cameo rather than the start of something more substantial, Siraj charging in and nailing him in front of the stumps. At 106 for three, India had taken control but the arrival of Brook brought a screeching gear shift. He went for all-out aggression, at one stage lashing 27 runs in eight balls. That included a crunch through midwicket and a lavish six over cover off Akash Deep before his near miss at fine-leg, risking his wicket but picking up six more for his efforts. Siraj looked mortified as he realised he had overbalanced, with the English fans revelling in his anguish. Krishna, meanwhile, had to quietly shelve the celebrations he had already started to perform.

James Maddison update after Tottenham star suffers 'brutal' injury
James Maddison appears to have suffered a major knee injury on the eve of the new Premier League season in a huge blow to Tottenham. Spurs drew 1-1 with Newcastle United in South Korea on Sunday, in what was an emotional pre-season friendly. The match marked the final appearance of captain Son Heung-min who earlier announced he would be leaving Tottenham after an incredible decade at the club. But there were concerning scenes in the final few minutes of the game when Maddison pulled up and fell to the pitch in a lot of distress, with physios quickly rushing to his aid. As the England international was attended to, distraught teammates watched on before the attacking midfielder was stretchered off with his hands covering his face. Even Son, looking on from the bench, was clearly shaken by the incident, with manager Thomas Frank giving a worrying update post-match. 'James Maddison's injury looks bad. It was a brutal moment,' the Dane said. 'I think sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal. That's what we got today. 'It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelievable scenes for Son from his team-mates and the respect from the Newcastle players. 'First we had the walkaround and then the team-mates gathered around and he was emotional. In the changing room it was more of the same. 'I just said a few things but not much because it's about Sonny and then he said a few things. It was beautiful. 'We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before.' More Trending The timing of the injury could not be worse with less than two weeks to go before Tottenham host Burnley in their first Premier League game of the 2025/26 season. The Lilywhites travel to Germany to take on Bayern Munich in their final pre-season fixture on Thursday. They kick-off the new season on August 13 when they face PSG in the UEFA Super Cup, before playing Burnley on August 16. More to follow… For more stories like this, check our sport page.
