Nvidia's RTX 50 Debut Was a Paper Launch, Stock Not Expected for Months
Nvidia's RTX 5090 might be the fastest graphics card in the world, but good luck finding one to buy. Despite all the hype at CES and a flurry of reviews of the new 50-series graphics cards (including the disappointing 5080), day-one buyers were further let down to find the cards out of stock almost before they'd gone on sale. Some retailers had just a handful of cards in stock, while others suggested more won't arrive until April or even May.
Gamers have been concerned since before the debut of these new cards that their stock numbers would be tight around launch, and Nvidia released a statement confirming as such—though promised more shipments were coming. However, when Jan. 30 rolled around, and the long lines of campers outside major stores were given a chance to buy, many found there just wasn't the stock available.
Reddit has been keeping track of the number of RTX 5090s and 5080s at Micro Center stores around the US, and the absolute best the entire chain had was 67 5090s and 199 5080s in Tustin, California—but that was an outlier. The next best was Columbus, Ohio, which had just 12 5090s and 80 5080s. Most Micro Centers, even major stores like their Yonkers, New York location, had to make do with just four or five 5090s and a few 10s of the 5080s, with some stores not even getting a single 5090 to dole out to waiting customers.
The YouTube tech channel GamersNexus reported on the shortages, suggesting that a major system builder they'd spoken to had been allocated just a single RTX 5090. Other major custom gaming PC builders were given only a handful, all of which sold out almost immediately.

The UK retailer Scan (via the Verge) even suggested that it wouldn't be seeing any new stock of RTX 5090s until April or May. Considering Nvidia reportedly halted production of the RTX 4090 toward the end of 2024 to—ostensibly—ramp up production of the RTX 5090, it begs the question of why such little stock was available for the launch.
This extreme lack of stock has sent prices for the new cards skyrocketing. Third-party cards are debuting at 50% higher than the suggested retail price, while the second-hand market is already awash with pre-order cards or promised retail versions as and when they're available. We found an RTX 5090 auction that's at over $5,000 on eBay.
The shortage is driving up the cost of older cards, too. Where you could have bought an RTX 4090 for around $1,600 at the end of 2024, today those same cards are going for close to $2,500 on Ebay.
Part of the reason that the cards are sold out everywhere is because of scalpers and bots used to buy up stock faster than humans can click on the buttons. Some have started to fight back against that by listing these cards in ways to trick bots without snaring human buyers, like this picture of an RTX 5090 that's going for over $1,000.

James Altucher: 'America Just Hit the AI Reset Button'
New briefing reveals how Trump and Musk are quietly building the most powerful artificial intelligence system in U.S. history — and why July 1 could mark a major turning point BALTIMORE, June 04, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In a new briefing, tech entrepreneur and bestselling author James Altucher reveals a development he says will 'change America forever.' At the center of it is Project Colossus — a classified supercomputer initiative led by Elon Musk's xAI — and backed by sweeping support from President Donald Trump. A Presidential Reversal with Massive Implications Altucher says the shift began with one of Trump's first presidential actions in 2025. 'In one of his FIRST acts as President… Donald Trump overturned Executive Order #14110.' This decision reversed Biden-era restrictions on AI research, which Altucher claims had 'prevented us from unleashing its true power.' 'Trump also announced the LARGEST AI investment in history… Stargate… a massive, AI data center and infrastructure project.' Hidden Inside a Warehouse in Memphis Altucher's report reveals a facility in Tennessee that, until now, has gone largely unnoticed. 'Right here, inside this warehouse in Memphis, Tennessee… lies a massive supercomputer Musk calls 'Project Colossus.'' 'It contains not just one or two… but 200,000 units of Nvidia's all-powerful AI chips… making it the most advanced AI facility known to man.' 'The fastest supercomputer on the planet.' — Jensen Huang, Nvidia CEO July 1: 'When It All Changes' According to Altucher, time is short. A critical update to Colossus is imminent. 'That's when I predict Elon could announce a major update to this new AI project. One that some say will essentially 10X its power – overnight.' Altucher refers to this moment as a 'second wave' of AI — what he calls: 'Artificial Superintelligence.' 'This second wave… will rival all of the great innovations of the past. Electricity… the wheel… even the discovery of fire.' A Warning… and a Milestone Altucher closes his briefing with a quote from Vladimir Putin to stress the stakes: 'Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world.' — Vladimir Putin He believes Project Colossus may determine whether America leads — or falls behind — in the AI race. Jim Cramer says Nvidia chips could give the U.S. leverage in the trade war with China
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday said graphics chips from artificial intelligence powerhouse Nvidia could give the U.S. leverage in the ongoing trade war with China. "If Trump's wants to win this game, he may have to show his trump card, Nvidia. As I see it, the others just don't make for a good hand," he said. "You have to play with the cards you've been dealt, and for decades, our government did everything it could to encourage outsourcing to China. They left us with a pretty lousy darn hand, both Republicans and Democrats." Trade tensions between the U.S. and China have been high since President Donald Trump threatened to hit Chinese imports with sky-high tariffs. While the U.S. has agreed to a 90-day pause on the new duties, relations remain tenuous. Trump wrote in a Wednesday social media post that it is "extremely hard" to make a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping, days after the White House indicated the two may speak this week. Cramer pointed to a few U.S. exports he thinks China wants — natural gas, Boeing planes, turbines for power plants and Nvidia products. He dubbed Nvidia the "one ace in our hand," but said the Trump administration doesn't want to play it. The White House announced strict regulations on Nvidia's exports to China — which CEO Jensen Huang said will cause his company to lose billions and hinder the U.S. from being a global leader in AI. Big business across the U.S. relies heavily on Chinese manufacturers, despite efforts to diversify their supply chains, Cramer lamented. He named Apple, Target, Stanley Black & Decker, Best Buy and Walmart as some prominent names scrambling to adjust to the new trade landscape. "President Trump better be a much tougher negotiator than President Xi, because right now we're so hooked on China it's almost hard to believe," Cramer said. The White House did not immediately respond to request for comment. Reddit sues Anthropic, says AI company exploited user data
Reddit Inc. sued artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, saying it has used the social media company's content without permission to train its AI models. The lawsuit, which was filed Wednesday in San Francisco Superior Court, alleges that Anthropic attempted to access Reddit data more than 100,000 times since last July. Reddit said this "unauthorized commercial use of its content" has breached its rules and exploited users' personal data without their consent. An Anthropic spokesperson said the company disagrees "with Reddit's claims and will defend ourselves vigorously," The AI firm, which was started by a group of ex-OpenAI employees, has taken a public position of being more oriented toward safety and responsibility than some of its competitors. Reddit, a San Francisco-based social media platform, called Anthropic's emphasis on trust and honesty "empty marketing gimmicks." The AI startup "bills itself as the white knight of the AI industry," yet "it is anything but," Reddit said in the lawsuit. "We believe in an open internet - that doesn't mean open for commercial exploitation," Ben Lee, Reddit's chief legal officer, said in an email. "We will not tolerate profit-seeking entities like Anthropic commercially exploiting Reddit content for billions of dollars without any return for redditors or respect for their privacy." In an interview, Lee said Reddit held several conversations with Anthropic in an effort to reach a licensing agreement, as it has with other AI companies such as OpenAI and Alphabet Inc.'s Google. Lee said he was optimistic about reaching a deal until recently and views the lawsuit as the company's final option to force Anthropic back to the bargaining table. Reddit would prefer to reach an agreement outside of court, Lee said, as the legal process could be lengthy. This suit is among a flurry of high-profile complaints against AI companies, including Meta Platforms Inc. and OpenAI, over claims of unauthorized use of copyrighted material to train their generative AI models. In March, a New York federal judge ruled that a copyright infringement suit brought by the New York Times and other newspapers can move forward against OpenAI and Microsoft over alleged unauthorized use of news articles to train chatbots and other AI tools. The newspapers are seeking billions of dollars in damages as compensation for unlawful use of their copyrighted content. The case is Reddit Inc. v.
