CPI(M), Congress attempt to put BJP on the defensive over arrest of Keralite nuns in Chhattisgarh
Seemingly stung by widespread criticism from civil society and Church leaders, and chary of losing the ground the party believed it had gained among Christians, the BJP in Kerala dispatched an express delegation headed by State general secretary, Anoop Antony, to Chhattisgarh to secure the early release of the nuns, Sisters Vandana Francis and Preeta Mary of the order of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate (ASMI), and ensure an 'unbiased investigation' in the case.
'Fear-inducing'
It also seemed not to help the BJP that Deepika, the mouthpiece of the Syro-Malabar Church, flagged an alleged dichotomy between the BJP's words and actions, chiefly in BJP-ruled States, wherein Christians allegedly faced severe persecution. Church leaders, including Mar Andrews Thazhath, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI), termed the arrest 'unsettling, fear-inducing and unconstitutional'.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State fommittee accused the Chhattisgarh police of siding with Bajrang Dal activists, who falsely accused the nuns of 'smuggling' three women from the Durga railway station in Chhattisgarh to Agra for 'coerced conversion' after an extrajudicial public trial.
Of Stan Swamy, Staines
The CPI(M) reminded the public about the 'Sangh Parivar-backed custodial murder' of Jesuit priest Stan Swamy and, earlier, the 1989 murder of Australian missionary Graham Staines and family allegedly at the hands of Bajrang Dal activists in Odisha.
The Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary Binoy Viswam said the overzealous arrest of nuns on 'trumped up' charges by the BJP government in Chhattisgarh revealed the actual fascist nature of the party.
Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, who visited the ageing parents of Sister Preeta Mary at Angamaly, portrayed the BJP as a 'wolf in a sheep's clothing'.
VHP justifies arrest
Meanwhile, Vishwa Hindu Parishad State general secretary Anil Vilayil justified the arrests. He accused the CBCI of obfuscating the 'facts' of the 'human trafficking' case. He alleged that the women travelling with nuns included an underage tribal community woman.

Attack on BJP supporters BJP supporters were attacked at Jampuijala in Tripura's Sepahijala district on Thursday. Though the attackers were not identified, BJP state tribal leader Bipin Debbarma made a veiled reference to the TIPRA Motha, asking why the BJP could not hold political events inside the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council areas. The TIPRA Motha is in power in the tribal council. The incident follows a recent attack on BJP activists in Khwai district last week when a group of TIPRA Motha supporters allegedly attacked people listening to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Mann ki Baat broadcast at a community event at Asharambari. At the time, Chief Minister Manik Saha had said that his government would not tolerate a culture of political violence, adding that anyone found liable would be dealt with strongly as per law. Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma had condemned the incident and urged his party workers to shun violence and stay united to show strength. He took to social media again on Friday, and without naming anyone, wrote, 'When people resort to intimidation to resolve or settle differences be it personal, religious or political then it pains me. Can we fight less and figure out how to unite and keep our borders safe? What party or politics will we all do, if our constitutional rights and our children's future is not secure? 'Will contest solo in Bihar if NDA talks collapse,' says SBSP chief Rajbhar
BALLIA: Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief Om Prakash Rajbhar said that his party is ready to contest the upcoming Bihar elections independently if seat-sharing talks with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) don't work out. Speaking to reporters at his party's headquarters in Rasra, Ballia district, on Friday evening, the Uttar Pradesh Panchayati Raj Minister Rajbhar said, "Our first preference is to contest the elections in alliance with the NDA. Around 70 percent of the discussions have been finalised, and 30 percent is still pending." "However, we are also preparing for a second option. If, due to pressure from certain Bihar leaders, an agreement isn't reached, we are fully prepared to contest the elections independently," he said. Rajbhar made it clear that his party will not join the INDIA bloc. "Many parties are working outside the INDIA alliance, and talks are underway with some of them. If talks with the BJP do not succeed, we will form a separate front and contest elections. We are actively working on 156 seats," he added. Criticising Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, he said, "When Rahul Gandhi travels abroad, he questions India's credibility and attacks the Election Commission. But when his party wins elections, he never raises such concerns. If he believes elections were rigged and victory came through manipulation, he should say so openly and provide evidence." He further alleged that Rahul Gandhi has already sensed defeat in Bihar, which is why "he has started making baseless statements, similar to those made by former PM VP Singh."
