How a 1969 IQ Study Proved Proper Expectations Can Make You Smarter
A 1969 UCLA study of IQ reveals the critical importance of expectations, our peers, and how you can lift yourself to greater heights.
The path to this study began in, of all places, Greek mythology.
A lusting artist
Pygmalion was a brilliant sculptor on the Greek island of Cyprus.
He was a dashing man, extremely talented, and thus was a highly eligible bachelor. There was tremendous pressure for him to marry.
Oddly, he was not interested in any of the women, which was causing discontent on the island.
The goddess Aphrodite visited him to understand the issue. As she walked in, she marveled at the beauty of the statues that lined his studio. She was amazed that every statue resembled her. She was honored by his work and tribute. She would repay him very soon.
Pygmalion's greatest creation, named Galatea, was enchantingly beautiful and a near-perfect mirror image of Aphrodite. He'd fallen in love with this statue and thus could not marry any other woman.
After hearing Pygmalion's pleading prayers to make the statue real, Aphrodite granted him the wish.
One night, as he leaned in to kiss the statue, he was surprised to feel soft human lips meeting his own.
This moment is depicted in the priceless painting 'Pygmalion and Galatea' by Jean-Léon Gérôme:
This story represents the power of transformation and belief.
It inspired George Bernard Shaw's book, Pygmalion, which was later made into the famous film, My Fair Lady. In it, a phonetics professor bets he can educate a young low-income woman and prepare her to mingle with society's elite without issue.
Decades later, a renowned psychologist designed a study that revealed the same central theme — that personal achievement is shaped (to a large degree) by how others see you.
The IQ Study and Pygmalion Effect
In 1969, UCLA psychologist Dr. Robert Rosenthal did an IQ experiment.
He met with two grade-school teachers. He gave them a list of names from their new student body (20% of the class). He said that each person on that list had taken a special test and would emerge as highly intelligent within the next 12 months.
In reality, those students were chosen totally at random. As a group, they were of average intelligence. The incredible finding is that, when they tested those children near the end of the year, each demonstrated significant increases in their IQ scores.
So what happened? Why?
The teacher's own behavior towards those students affected the outcomes.
They gave the fake-talented students more attention. When one raised their hand to answer a question, the teacher often followed up to get better clarification. The teachers were more positive and encouraging to those students.
Meanwhile, the teacher was much shorter with students they deemed subpar. Rosenthal speculated the teacher figured the student might be dumb, so why go the extra mile?
Dr. Rosenthal said, 'When we expect certain behaviors of others, we are likely to act in ways that make the expected behavior more likely to occur.'
The opposite of the Pygmalion effect is the Golem Effect; it occurs when our negative expectations generate negative results. This is partly why internalizing stereotypes is so damaging.
What can we learn from these effects? Two things.
The first thing
The children in Rosenthal's study began to internalize the belief that they were special. They bought into the idea, 'I'm smart so I can do this.'
Their self-efficacy grew and evolved and they stopped indulging in self-limiting beliefs.
The act of believing something to be true can impact every aspect of our life. For example, OKCupid's founder, Christian Rudder, did a Pygmalion experiment with online dating. Researchers lied to users. They reversed the matching algorithm on a select group of singles, pairing them with people who were objectively incompatible. And told them they were high probability matches.
Because the participants believed they had chemistry, they messaged each other and began flirting. They were friendlier and gave each other a shot. Incredibly, some ended up together in long term relationships.
And now, somewhere out there, someone is in love with their nemesis.
Become your own teacher or mentor
We position ourselves to thrive by surrounding ourselves with people who believe in us and hold us to a high standard. This is why toxic people have such a devastating effect on your life.
Think about a good boss versus a bad boss.
A good boss knows how to communicate and holds you to high but reasonable expectations. They give you useful feedback rather than waiting for you to make a mistake and scold you. A bad boss does the opposite of those things. I've been through this myself, with a boss who made me feel like I couldn't win no matter how hard I tried. And, I've had a great boss who helped me grow, believed in me, and rooted for me to perform great.
When the expectation is there to perform, you stop second guessing yourself so much. You act. You get down to the important actions that move you towards a desired outcome.
A key component of this is having a growth mindset, a belief that one's abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, effort, and learning
Someone with a fixed mindset thinks their identity and fate are largely pre-determined. They are often self-defeating.
'What is the point? I'm stupid.'
'I'm too lazy to get in shape.'
'Nobody in my family is successful so I won't be.'
The most successful people I've ever known have a fighting spirit, a helpful defiance in them to keep going. They don't seek out reasons they can't win.
The good news? The fact that you are here reading this self-help article suggests you are likely of a growth mindset.
If you are plagued by self-doubt and self-criticism, here is a strategy I learned during cognitive behavioral therapy. Keep a sheet of paper and a pen by your desk. Anytime you notice you are self-criticizing, saying you are lazy or not good enough, or indulging any negative thought—make a line on that piece of paper.
Then, count the lines at the end of the day. Make it a goal to reduce that count each day.
You can take it a step further and make a plus symbol anytime you realize you are indulging empowering thoughts. Seek to increase those in the same manner. This exercise will help you build awareness of your thought process, which is what drives all of the actions you take. It will help you reform and sculpt the perfect mindset.
The takeaway is simple
Surround yourself with great people who hold you to a high but reasonable standard.
Treat yourself like another person who you are responsible for. Treat yourself like that student who believes they are talented.
Have the courage to believe in yourself even if nobody else does. Become a prophet of your own success.
The big idea is that when we expect a certain outcome out of a person, including ourselves, that outcome becomes more likely to occur. If you expect nothing, or mediocrity—expect exactly that.

This Oil May Help Lower Cholesterol—Here's What a New Study Says
Reviewed by Dietitian Mandy Enright, M.S., RDN, RYTKey Points Having high blood lipids, which includes LDL cholesterol, is a risk factor for heart disease. This study suggests that ingesting extra-virgin olive oil daily may improve cholesterol levels. EVOO with higher antioxidant levels seemed to be most heart disease is the No. 1 killer of Americans, it is also possible to prevent it. The American Heart Association promotes tips for prevention with its Life's Essential 8, eight areas that influence heart health—four of them health behaviors and four of them measurable health factors. The behaviors include eating a heart-healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, quitting tobacco and getting healthy sleep. The other factors include managing weight, cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. Many studies have indicated that olive oil may help promote a healthy cardiovascular system. This is partly due to its heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. But there's another component of olive oil that may also play a heart-healthy role: polyphenols. Polyphenols are powerful plant compounds that exhibit antioxidant properties. Scientists in Greece wanted to take a closer look at the polyphenols in extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), comparing the benefits of two EVOOs with different levels of polyphenols. Their results were published in Nutrients. Let's break down what they found. How Was This Study Conducted? Researchers recruited two groups of people—one group had hyperlipidemia (high blood lipids, including LDL cholesterol), and the other was a 'healthy' group without hyperlipidemia. The hyperlipidemia group had 24 men and 26 women with an average age of 52; the healthy group had 8 men and 12 women with an average age of 49. Researchers split the hyperlipidemia group in half, with one half receiving an extra-virgin olive oil with high phenolic content and the other using an extra-virgin olive oil with lower phenolic content. Still, the group taking the extra-virgin olive oil with lower phenolic content took a higher dose of it so that each group's total daily phenolic content from extra-virgin olive oil was equal. The healthy group consisted of 20 individuals who were gender-matched to participants in the other two groups. This group also took either the high- or low-phenolic EVOOs in the same dosages as the hyperlipidemia participants. The reason for this 'healthy' group was to see if there were any differences in their blood lipids at the end of the study period, which lasted for four weeks, and to compare the healthy group's changes in bloodwork to the hyperlipidemia groups' changes, including differences between genders. All participants were instructed to take the olive oil on an empty stomach for faster absorption of the polyphenols, and to continue with their regular diet and activities. They were also asked to not add any supplements or foods high in polyphenols that were not already a part of their normal routine. What Did This Study Show? At the end of the four weeks, 22 participants in the lower-phenolic group and 28 in the higher-phenolic group had made it to the end of the study period with a 100% adherence rate. Researchers found that the hyperlipidemia group had greater improvements in blood lipids compared to the healthy group. Specifically, they found that HDL cholesterol—which is the beneficial type of cholesterol—increased, and lipoprotein (a), also called Lp(a) and similar to LDL cholesterol, decreased slightly in the hyperlipidemia group, but not in the healthy group. Even though both groups had equal daily phenolic content from olive oil, the group that ingested the higher-phenolic EVOO showed significant improvements in total blood cholesterol compared to the group that consumed the lower-phenolic EVOO at higher doses. This study does have several limitations, including the small sample size and short study duration. The participants were also from the region in Greece that grows the specific type of olive that was used to make these extra-virgin olive oils, so it is unknown whether these results can be generalized to other populations in other parts of the world. Additionally, researchers did not gather dietary information from participants, so it's unknown what other foods rich in polyphenols they were consuming. Researchers also cannot be confident that the healthy fats in the olive oil didn't contribute to these results. How Does This Apply to Real Life? Olive oil is one of the staples of the Mediterranean diet. That's because it's been shown time and time again to support overall health and lower the risk of certain diseases, including heart disease. Research also suggests that it may lower the risk of dementia-related death. Some folks even take a shot of the heart- and brain-healthy oil every morning, touting extra-virgin olive oil's anti-inflammatory properties. And while you certainly could do a shot of straight up EVOO each morning, cooking meals and snacks with olive oil throughout the day might be a more palatable option. You can create a flavorful dipping oil for your favorite bread by adding herbs and spices to extra-virgin olive oil—or use it to drizzle over veggies. It's important to note that this study used extra-virgin olive oil, not regular olive oil, which is lighter in color and flavor. EVOO is a higher quality oil, while regular olive oil is more refined and neutral in flavor (kind of like canola or vegetable oil). EVOO has to meet more rigorous standards and has more polyphenols—so if you want to up your intake of those, go for the EVOO. New research reveals food choices that can boost immune system: 'Highlights the benefits of these traditional food products' The health benefits of a Mediterranean diet have long been touted. New research suggests that an African heritage diet may offer similar advantages. Plant Based News summarized a study published in April in the journal Nature Medicine that indicated swapping Western foods for a traditional Northern Tanzanian diet — rich in green vegetables, legumes, fermented foods, and whole grains — could demonstrate positive impacts in a short time. Researchers assessed 23 men living in rural areas who typically adhered to a diet reflective of the Kilimanjaro region and who switched to a Western diet for a two-week period; 22 men living in urban areas who typically consumed a Western diet and switched to a traditional Kilimanjaro diet for the same period; and 22 men who typically followed a Western diet and added Mbege — a fermented banana and millet drink — for one week. These participants kept food diaries, and the research team took blood samples at the start of the study, two weeks in, and four weeks after it ended. The results indicated that switching to the traditional diet resulted in improved immune system function and "promoted the release of anti-inflammatory biomarkers, suggesting a potential reduction in [non-communicable disease] risk," according to a breakdown from News Medical. Meanwhile, switching to a Western diet "[upregulated] inflammatory biomarkers, resulting in chronic inflammation," and weakened immune responses. Those who added Mbege to their Western diet, however, saw metabolic and immune improvements relative to those who didn't. The trial adds to a growing body of research exploring the potential health benefits of plant-based diets. A 2022 study from Stanford University comparing identical twins, for example, found that plant-based diets were associated with lower insulin levels, reduced body weight, and lower levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. A study from the National Institutes of Health suggested that obtaining the majority of dietary fats from plant sources, such as nuts, grains, and vegetables, could significantly lower heart disease-related mortality. Notably, plant-based diets can also provide a climate benefit. Cutting back on animal agriculture can lower the release of heat-trapping methane into the atmosphere and reduce the potential for water contamination. Meanwhile, investing in sustainable plant farming — including best practices for drought- and flood-resilience — can support biodiversity and soil health while strengthening global food systems that can be compromised by extreme weather. In a press release, corresponding author Quirijn de Mast noted, "Our study highlights the benefits of these traditional food products for inflammation and metabolic processes in the body.
