
The best window to see Pluto all year is closing
A once-a-year alignment makes the dwarf planet easier to spot—if you know where to look.
Think you can spot Pluto? On July 25, the famously elusive dwarf planet reaches opposition—its best and brightest moment of the year. That makes now the ideal time to try to catch a glimpse of it from your own backyard.
But be warned: Even at its brightest, Pluto is still a barely-there speck, even through a telescope. But for those willing to search, it's a cosmic scavenger hunt—and a rare chance to see a world nearly four billion miles away. What is opposition—and why is it the best time to see Pluto?
In astronomy, opposition is when a celestial body lies directly opposite the sun from Earth's point of view, placing our planet squarely in the middle. That alignment means the object rises as the sun sets and stays visible all night, making it the best time to observe it.

What makes opposition so useful for stargazing is a phenomenon known as the opposition effect. 'Things tend to get brighter when they're lit at a smaller phase angle, which is the angle between the sun's rays and the target and the observer. That shrinks to close to zero at opposition,' says Will Grundy, a planetary scientist at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, where Pluto was discovered.
You can see this principle in action on Earth. When the sun is low in the sky, objects create long shadows. But when the sun is directly overhead, those shadows get much smaller, and sometimes they even disappear entirely. At opposition, Pluto's terrain has the fewest shadows, making the dwarf planet appear brighter to us. Because Pluto is so dim, you need a telescope to see it. 'A backyard telescope could do it under the right conditions,' says Grundy. Or you could visit a local observatory and use one of their publicly accessible telescopes. Lowell Observatory, for instance, has a suite of instruments on-site that the public can use six nights per week.
But even with a telescope, the sky must be extremely dark to see Pluto. Light pollution, whether from artificial lights or the moon, will easily wash out the dwarf planet.

To find Pluto in dark enough skies, consult a star chart to determine its approximate location. 'It'll just look like one of many faint stars,' says Grundy. But Pluto moves slowly. 'It moves at about three arcseconds per hour, so you won't see it move unless you're willing to wait multiple hours,' says Grundy.
You don't have to catch Pluto on July 25 exactly. Because it's so distant—about 3.7 billion miles from the sun—it remains near peak brightness for several days before and after opposition.

Pluto's origin story begins with two other planets. After Uranus was discovered in 1781, astronomers realized that an undiscovered planet might be perturbing Uranus' orbit. 'Sure enough, Neptune was discovered basically bang-on where astronomers predicted it should be,' says Grady.
But Percival Lowell, the founder of Lowell Observatory, believed there to be another planet affecting Uranus' orbit: a mysterious 'Planet X.' After a decade of searching, Lowell died in 1916 without finding it.

Eventually, the search resumed at Lowell Observatory, culminating in Clyde Tombaugh's discovery of Pluto in 1930. As it turns out, Pluto wasn't the gravitational culprit Lowell had imagined. It was far too small to tug on Uranus's orbit in any meaningful way. But it was still a monumental discovery: the solar system's ninth planet—at least until its reclassification as a dwarf planet in 2006.
To find Pluto, Tombaugh diligently photographed the night sky, then used a machine to compare two photographic plates, looking for any tiny pinpricks that moved. That's essentially the same method Grundy suggests stargazers use in July to ensure they're looking at Pluto.
Following its discovery, Pluto remained just a faint dot until the 1990s, when the Hubble Space Telescope provided some grainy images showing light and dark spots. But it wasn't until 2015 that we got a close-up look at Pluto, thanks to a flyby by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft.
The images showed a dynamic, geologically active planet with icy mountains, nitrogen glaciers, and even hints of a subsurface ocean. 'It could be inhabitable if there's liquid water and lots of organic materials and rocks for minerals,' says Grundy, who serves as a co-investigator on the New Horizons mission.
That revelation has major implications for astrobiology. 'Pluto moved the goalpost of where inhabitable planetary settings are—much, much farther away from the sun than we ever thought possible,' says Grundy. 'And the same thing will be true around other stars, too. Basically, the inhabitable zone just expanded hugely.'

In an email sent to center employees at 12:45 p.m. and shared with The New York Times, she did not give a reason for her departure. Cynthia Simmons, the center's deputy director, will take over as acting director. 'I am honored to have been part of this incredible journey with you,' Lystrup wrote. The NASA letter follows similar letters of criticism by federal employees at the National Institutes of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency. Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, the NIH director, said he welcomed respectful dissent, but the EPA placed 144 employees who signed that agency's letter on leave. She said that staff members 'go to the bathroom to talk to each other, and look under the stalls to make sure that no one else is there before we talk.' Gorman is one of 287 current and former NASA employees who signed the letter, although more than half did so anonymously. More than 15,000 people work at the space agency. Prominent scientists outside of NASA, including 20 Nobel Prize winners, also offered their names in support. The NIH letter inspired some people at NASA to put together a similar effort. The NIH letter writers had called their dissent the 'Bethesda Declaration' — the agency is in Bethesda, Md. — and the NASA letter writers called theirs the 'Voyager Declaration,' in honor of Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, the two NASA space probes launched in the 1970s that continue to function as they fly through interstellar space. 'One of the messages that NASA management has been passing down to every employee is that no one is coming to save us, including Congress,' said one of the organizers of the letter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear for retaliation. 'So the Voyager Declaration is one effort to raise our voices and speak out to save ourselves,' the person added. The letter is framed as a 'formal dissent' — an official process at NASA for registering disagreements that managers may not want to hear. It was part of changes instituted at NASA after the losses of the Columbia and Challenger space shuttles when concerns of some engineers were brushed aside. In its budget request to Congress in June, the Trump administration proposed slashing NASA's budget by almost 25 percent. NASA's science mission directorate, which includes earth science, solar system missions and astrophysics, would face a cut of 47 percent, to $3.9 billion from $7.3 billion. Nineteen currently operating science missions, including the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the Juno mission at Jupiter and the two Orbiting Carbon Observatories, would be turned off and discarded. In her statement, Stevens said, 'The reality is that President Trump has proposed billions of dollars for NASA science, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to communicating our scientific achievements.' Congress does not appear to agree with making draconian cuts. A Senate subcommittee proposed providing $7.3 billion for NASA's science mission directorate for fiscal year 2026, the same amount as the current year. Its counterpart in the House of Representatives was less generous, proposing $6 billion for the science missions. While NASA has so far avoided widespread layoffs, thousands of employees have left or are planning to leave under early retirement and buyout offers. 'Some I know have left because they want to make space for other younger people to stay,' Gorman said. One complaint of the letter writers is that NASA leaders have made decisions based on the president's proposed cuts, without waiting to see what Congress will provide. Another concern is that even if Congress provides money for science missions, the administration could refuse to spend it. Astronomers Spot Companion Star in Orbit Around Iconic Star Betelgeuse, Confirming Suspicions
In 2024, astronomers surmised that Betelgeuse might have a stellar 'buddy.' If this hypothetical companion existed, it would help answer some questions about the red supergiant's strange glowing patterns. As it turns out, these suspicions were correct. After numerous false signals and empty search results, astronomers with NASA's Ames Research Center have confirmed that Betelgeuse does, in fact, have a tiny buddy star. The young star, with a mass about 1.5 times that of the Sun, likely exerts some unsolicited influence on the larger star's gravitational field and the cosmic dust floating in its vicinity. The interactions between the two stars make it appear as though Betelgeuse—unlike most stars of its kind—undergoes an additional, extended period of intermittent dimming roughly every six years. 'Papers that predicted Betelgeuse's companion believed that no one would likely ever be able to image it,' Steve Howell, an astronomer who led the team that discovered the star, said in a statement. 'This now opens the door for other observational pursuits of a similar nature.' For the discovery, astronomers used the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii, employing a technique known as speckle imaging, which uses very short exposure times to wipe out distortions in space images caused by Earth's atmosphere. This allowed the researchers to directly capture the companion star at a high enough resolution to identify some key characteristics about the newly discovered star, such as its mass and temperature. What's fascinating about 'BetelBuddy'—as the researchers who predicted its existence called it in a past interview with Gizmodo—is that it was probably born around the same time as Betelgeuse. To put this into perspective, Betelgeuse, a red supergiant, is nearing the end of its stellar lifespan, and astronomers predict it could explode into a fiery supernova within a decade or so. But the newly discovered companion star is so young that it hasn't even started igniting hydrogen at its core, implying that it's still at the earliest stages of stellar evolution. This is likely because Betelgeuse, which is somewhere between 10 and 20 times the mass of our Sun, has a far shorter lifespan compared to its lightweight buddy. Given Betelgeuse's relative proximity to Earth, astronomers have studied it more closely than most other stars for centuries. From their observations, astronomers found that the star's brightness varies on a cycle of about 400 days, with a secondary period lasting around six years. Variable stars are relatively common, but astronomers had long struggled to explain why Betelgeuse had an extended dimming period. To be clear, this is different from the 'Great Dimming' of Betelgeuse from 2019 to 2020, which scientists suspect is the result of the star ejecting a large cloud of dust that subsequently blurred its brightness. The Mystery of Betelgeuse's Weird Dimming Is Likely Solved With the new discovery, astronomers now have a good answer to the mystery behind the years-long dimming and brightening pattern of the huge star Betelgeuse. They expect, however, that Betelgeuse's intense gravitational pull will gobble up the young star within the next 10,000 years. Thankfully, this won't be the first and last time we see BetelBuddy alive. Astronomers expect the young star to pass within our telescopes' detection range in November 2027, when it flies the farthest away from Betelgeuse.

Hundreds of current, former NASA workers oppose Trump administration cuts
July 21 (UPI) -- Several hundred current and former NASA employees, including at least four retired astronauts, backed a letter that opposes the Trump administration's significant cuts to the federal space agency. The letter, which included 131 signatures and 156 unnamed ones out of "fear of retaliation," is titled "The Voyager Declaration." It is named after the two NASA spacecraft exploring space when they launched in 1977 from Florida. The retired astronauts who signed the letter include Cady Coleman, Steve Swanson, Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenburger and John Herrington. Scientists outside NASA, including 20 Nobel Prize winners, also have given their support for the agency that was found in 1958 before the first unmanned satellite launched. The letter was addressed to Sean Duffy, who was named interim NASA administrator on Juy 10 and continues to serve as Transportation Secretary. He replaced acting NASA Administrator Janet Petro, a long-time agency employee. "In light of your recent appointment as Interim NASA Administrator, we bring to your attention recent policies that have or threaten to waste public resources, compromise human safety, weaken national security, and undermine the core NASA mission," the letter reads. They urged Duffy to oppose a 24% budget reduction and 31% workforce cuts as proposed by the Trump administration. Out of the 17,000-plus NASA employees, 2,600 have lost their jobs, according to Politicio. And at least $117 million in NASA grants already have been canceled. Congress sets U.S. spending. Workers at other federal agencies, including the National Institutes of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency, have penned similar letters opposing cutbacks. "The consequences for the agency and the country alike are dire," the letter says. The signers of the letter cited wasteful efforts affecting the workforce. "Major programmatic shifts at NASA must be implemented strategically so that risks are managed carefully," the letter reads. "Instead, the last six months have seen rapid and wasteful changes which have undermined our mission and caused catastrophic impacts on NASA's workforce. "We are compelled to speak up when our leadership prioritizes political momentum over human safety, scientific advancement, and efficient use of public resources. These cuts are arbitrary and have been enacted in defiance of congressional appropriations law." The letter lays out several things on which the letter writers say, "we dissent": Changes to NASA's Technical Authority Closing of missions appropriated by Congress "Indiscriminate" cuts to NASA science and aeronautics research "Non-strategic staffing reductions" Canceling of NASA participation in international missions Termination of contracts and grants "unrelated to performance" Elimination of programs for supporting NASA's workforce The Technical Authority was established in wake of the 2003 Columbia shuttler disaster that killed seven astronauts. It allows workers in all levels of the agency to voice concern outside a usual chain of command. The letter was dedicated to the Columbia astronauts, as well as Gus Grissom, Ed White And Roger Chaffee, who died aboard Apollo 1 at the launch pad in 1967, and seven killed in the 1987 Challenger explosion. "Their legacies underpin every conversation about our shared commitment to safety and dissenting opinions at NASA," the letter reads. Monica Gorman, an operations research analyst at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., told The New York Times: "We're afraid of retaliation." She added: "I'm already at risk of losing my job, and I'd rather speak out and try to save something at NASA, rather than just hide under my desk until I get laid off. But I am scared." Ella Kaplan, who also works at Goddard, as a contractor for website administratipon, signed the letter. Kaplan told she doesn't expect Duffy to read the entire letter but the declaration is "about getting our dissent out to the public and saying, 'Hey -- this is what's happened at NASA, and this is not OK.'" NASA spokesman Bethany Steven told that NASA is not interested in sustaining "lower-priority missions." "We must revisit what's working and what's not so that we can inspire the American people again and win the space race," she said. Makenzie Lystrup, Goddard's direct since 2023, resigned, effective Aug. 1, after the letter was released, according to an internal email obtained by CNN. NASA, with the retirement of the shuttle in 2011, mainly relies on SpaceX, a private company, to send astronauts to the International Space Station. NASA is leading the Artemis program to send humans to the moon again in a few years. The agency is working with SpaceX, Blue Origin and Intuitive Machines as well as foreign public agencies.
