Falling tree nearly hits professional cellist in Northwest DC

WASHINGTON () — A tree that came tumbling down near Scott Circle in Northwest nearly hit a cellist who was in the area Thursday.
Carlos Figueroa, who also is known as , said he was walking in the 1500 block of Massachusetts Ave. NW when he heard a loud sound. Figuroa said the tree fell as he was passing under it, nearly crushing him.
'I just couldn't believe what I just witnessed,' recalled Figueroa, who rushed away from the tree when he realized what was taking place. 'You never know what will happen.'
Neither he nor anyone else was hurt.

The tree was outside of 1500 Mass Apartments, which is run by Equity Apartments. People who live there said they had been worried the tree would fall.
'It actually [has] been on the verge of coming down for a couple of months now, for like the last three or four months. It was withering away,' said Samuel Hall. 'So, I thought that they would send somebody out.'

Although the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) said the tree, which was on private property, was the building's responsibility, DDOT crews responded to clear it after the tree fell in the public's right-of-way.
'It could have been a mother with her baby in the stroller or anything, you know…I'm just glad that no one got hurt,' Hall said.
DC News Now reached out to Equity Apartments about the fallen tree, and it said it was looking into the incident.

DDOT adds four new red light cameras across DC

WASHINGTON () — Drivers traveling in the District can expect to see more red-light cameras as D.C. continues to expand its Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) program. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced Tuesday that were added to 'High Injury Network' locations across the District. Officials said these locations are where data analysis has identified speeding and red light running as safety issues. During this period, drivers will receive warning citations. Once the 30-day warning period is over, drivers will be issued infractions with fines starting at $150 for running a red light. According to DDOT, D.C.'s ATE program was designed to create safer roadways. The goal is to eliminate all traffic-related deaths and severe injuries. WASHINGTON () — With many families and children across the District taking part in Halloween celebrations, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is encouraging drivers to be aware of trick-or-treaters. During Halloween weekend, D.C. police and the District Department of Transportation said it is increasing its traffic enforcement. Additionally, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice (DMPSJ) said it will deploy 'Halloween Go Teams' on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., in various neighborhoods throughout the city. Do not look at your phone when driving. Never drive under the influence. Use rideshare services, such as taxis, Uber, and Lyft. If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact law enforcement. If traveling with a group, assign a designated driver. Children should travel in small groups and be accompanied by parents or an authorized adult chaperone. Wear clothing that is bright, reflective, and flame-retardant. Parents/chaperones should ensure costumes have a reflective attachment to be easily seen in the dark. Only cross the street at street corners/crosswalks. Do not walk in between cars. Always look around ways before crossing the street. Make sure that the street is well-lit to see oncoming traffic. Children should never go into homes – stay on the porch or stoop when asking for treats. Children should avoid homes that do not have their outside lights turned on. Children should never go into a strangers' cars if approached. Children should stay within familiar areas and surroundings. Children should be aware of how to contact their parents/chaperones while out trick-or-treating. Children should use flashlights and stay on sidewalks.
