Mayor Bowser to unveil new plaza at former Dave Thomas Circle in DC

WASHINGTON () — On Monday, leaders across Washington, D.C., will cut the ribbon on a new plaza formerly known as '.' On June 2, at 11 a.m., Mayor Muriel Bowser, along with the District Department of Transportation and the NoMa Business Improvement District, will celebrate the transformation of the Mamie 'Peanut' Johnson Plaza. For nearly two years, construction has been underway at the intersection. The plaza was named after Mamie 'Peanut' Johnson, who was the first woman to ever pitch in the Negro Leagues. She was a longtime resident of Northeast D.C., and graduated from Long Branch High School. The ribbon cutting will also commemorate the completion of the Florida Avenue Multimodal Streetscape Project. PREVIOUS COVERAGE | New traffic pattern for Mamie 'Peanut' Johnson Plaza, formerly Dave Thomas Circle Before the redesign, the Florida Avenue and New York Avenue intersection was marked as one of the most dangerous intersections in D.C. However, the new design includes two-way traffic on First Street, new protected bike lanes and enhanced pedestrian connectivity. The construction transformed Florida Avenue from 2nd Street to H Street with new sidewalks, bike lanes, traffic signals and curb realignment. Officials noted that the goal of both projects was to improve the overall safety across the Florida Avenue NE corridor. The ribbon cutting comes after Bowser presented the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget, Grow DC, last week. The budget includes investments in transportation and infrastructure across all eight wards. The budget also includes $76 million in additional funds for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, $402 million for major bridge rehabilitation, $402 million to maintain roads, sidewalks, alleys and more. DC mayor kicks off annual ‘Spring Cleaning Initiatives' to get city ready warmer months

WASHINGTON () — Spring is here and with summer just around the corner, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is ensuring the District is ready to take on the heat with the annual 'Spring Cleaning Initiatives.' On Monday, Bowser anounced that throughout the spring, the Department of Public Works will complete 'community cleans' across neighborhoods that need extra attention. The District Department of Transportation and DC Water along with other utility companies will also relaunch its 'Smooth Streets' iniatives. This focuses on restoring and repaving roads that were impacted by utility work throughout the winter. Over the next month, until May 15, crews will visit more than 2,400 locations across the city, according to officials. 'Wicked' sing-along in Arlington County 'As the weather warms up and residents and visitors explore our city, we want every space, from sidewalks to parks to roadways, to reflect our pride and the investments we've made to keep DC clean, safe, and beautiful,' said Bowser. 'Spring cleaning is about more than tidying up, it's about showing love for our neighborhoods and working together to keep our communities vibrant.' In addition, the Department of General Services is also joining the clean-up. Officials said teams will being working toward preparing parks, recreaton centers, aquatic facilities and public spaces for the upcoming summer season. Crews will also sweep the streets, and clean the alleys and corridors. Teams will plant trees and remove grafitti and hazardouse waste disposal across the District. DC Beer Festival returns to Nationals Park 'This work is deeply personal to me—I've spent years rolling up my sleeves to connect people, build community, and strengthen our neighborhoods,' said Maria Barry, new Director of the Office of the Clean City. 'I could not be more excited to lead the Mayor's Office of the Clean City, bringing that same passion and energy into this role, working to spark pride, inspire action, and create a cleaner, safer DC.' For Earth Day, on April 19, the community is invited to join Bowser's 8th Annual Spring Clean-up Day. This year's clean-up sites include the following: Ward 1: Columbia Heights Dog Park, 3320 11th Street NW Ward 2: French Street Park, 941 French Street NW Ward 3: Forrest Hills Park, 3220 Chesapeake Street NW Ward 4: 14th and Spring Road, 3700 14th Street NW Ward 5: Carver Park, 1854 L Street NE Ward 6: H Street NE, 800 H Street NE Ward 7: JW King Senior Residences, 4638 H Street SE Ward 8: Turner Elementary School, 3264 Stanton Road SE Residents are encouraged to report trash buildup, illegal dumping or abandoned vehicles by calling 311. WASHINGTON () — A tree that came tumbling down near Scott Circle in Northwest nearly hit a cellist who was in the area Thursday. Carlos Figueroa, who also is known as , said he was walking in the 1500 block of Massachusetts Ave. NW when he heard a loud sound. Figuroa said the tree fell as he was passing under it, nearly crushing him. 'I just couldn't believe what I just witnessed,' recalled Figueroa, who rushed away from the tree when he realized what was taking place. 'You never know what will happen.' Neither he nor anyone else was hurt. People who live there said they had been worried the tree would fall. 'It actually [has] been on the verge of coming down for a couple of months now, for like the last three or four months. It was withering away,' said Samuel Hall. 'So, I thought that they would send somebody out.' DC set to celebrate 20th anniversary of Emancipation Day holiday with parade, festival Although the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) said the tree, which was on private property, was the building's responsibility, DDOT crews responded to clear it after the tree fell in the public's right-of-way. 'It could have been a mother with her baby in the stroller or anything, you know…I'm just glad that no one got hurt,' Hall said. WASHINGTON () — The Black Lives Matter Plaza mural in Washington, D.C., has disappeared as the plaza's reconstruction nears completion, just weeks after crews began alterations. German Vigil, the spokesman for the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), told DC News Now on Monday that the 'reconstruction' of the plaza in 16th St. NW, between H and K streets, is in its 'final stage and will be completed ahead of schedule.' Vigil noted that 'efficient project management,' good weather conditions and the cooperation of area businesses have allowed the mural's removal to progress without delays. Construction on the plaza began on March 10. 'Most of the work has already been completed, with pavement markings as the final step. Although striping is scheduled to be finished by the end of the week, the roadway has been reopened to traffic,' Vigil said, in part. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) introduced legislation at the beginning of March that would withhold federal funding from the city until officials removed the mural and renamed it 'Liberty Plaza.' The plaza and mural (which reads 'Black Lives Matter' in bold yellow letters) were initially designed in 2020 amid protests over the murder of George Floyd. WASHINGTON () — The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is giving the public a heads-up as crews install traffic control devices in Southeast D.C. On Thursday, crews began to install the devices along Pennsylvania Avenue from 40th Street to Southern Avenue. DDOT said the work will take place Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and continue on some Saturdays until mid-April. Curbside parking might be restricted, but 'Emergency No Parking' signs will be posted 72 hours in advance. The department said traffic control devices will be placed to warn drivers, pedestrians and cyclists approaching the work zone. Drivers are encouraged to stay alert and prepared for possible detours when traveling in this area. Flaggers will also be present to guide traffic.
