Vice President pick likely from Backward class, someone 'neutral and seasoned'
They expressed that it would be someone representing a significant portion of the pichhara (backward) classes.
Speaking to TNIE, in the premises of Parliament, several NDA MPs from both the Upper and Lower Houses, requesting anonymity, hinted at a strong possibility of candidate being from backward or extremely backward community.
'Jo bhi hoga aisa lagata hai picchare varg se hoga' (Whosoever it will be, as it appears now, he will be from the backwards classes). What exactly prompted Dhankhar to resign, however, remains one of the biggest political mysteries.
Yet, speculation continues to swirl across the corridors of Parliament that either Bihar or West Bengal may be represented in the second-highest constitutional office -- potentially ushering in another political surprise.
'Ram Nath Thakur—Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare—is one of the prominent names doing the rounds as the most likely candidate,' a senior BJP source said.
He further said, "Thakur is the son of the Bharat Ratna awardee and former (late) Bihar CM Karpoori Thakur and belongs to the Nai (barber) community, an ati-pichhara caste'. Nadda, BJP's current president's name is also doing the rounds. When questioned on how this could be feasible, noting that he occupies concurrent charge of the Health Ministry, a senior BJP source clarified that a cabinet reshuffle is likely after the Monsoon Session.
He may resign from the post before being declared the Vice-Presidential candidate, and his ministry could be temporarily handed over to another cabinet minister as an additional charge.
Dhankhar's resignation remains enigmatic, with reasons known only to him till date. But, there are, however, a few circulating theories -- including speculation of friction between him and the government on certain issues.
This development has also brought Bihar CM Nitish Kumar back into political discussions.
'His (Nitish Kumar's) name has not come up only this time; it has been speculated for the last few years. But this does not seem to be happening,' said a senior JDU member, refusing to accept that this speculation carries a much possibility.
Among the other names surfacing in the power corridors are senior BJP leader and former Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje, present Bihar Governor Md. Arif Khan, former Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, and Harivansh, currently Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, who is managing the House in the wake of Dhankhar's resignation.
'Despite all these names, you know our government springs a surprise,' one senior BJP source cryptically remarked, hinting that a person from West Bengal may still be in consideration.

AAP dares Delhi govt. to release desilting audit report
The political face-off between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP over the issue of waterlogging in the Capital continued on Thursday. AAP asked the ruling party whether it had conducted the High Court-mandated third-party audit of desilting of stormwater drains. In response, the BJP said it is 'undoing the corruption that AAP had done in the name of desilting drains'. In a post on X, AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj wrote, 'On April 8, 2024, the Delhi High Court had ordered that all desilting works carried out by the Public Works Department or the Municipal Corporation of Delhi must be independently audited.' Mr. Bharadwaj said he had written to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta asking her to make public the audit report, if conducted. He also requested an Anti-Corruption Branch probe into why the audits were not carried out last year when AAP was in power. 'Despite repeated written requests from my end, the then Chief Secretary did not conduct a third-party audit of desilting works,' Mr. Bharadwaj said. 'If the BJP government does not order an ACB investigation, it will be a clear indication that the BJP is actively trying to shield corruption and is fully complicit in it,' he said. Hitting back, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva alleged that over the past 10 years, the Delhi Jal Board and the PWD under the AAP government had turned into 'centres of loot'. He added that under AAP, desilting became a 'lucrative source of corruption', which led a local citizen group to file a petition in the High Court in 2018. 'When in 2024, the court finally ordered a desilting audit, Bharadwaj used it as a tool to shift the blame onto the officials,' Mr. Sachdeva said, adding that the AAP Delhi president should explain why desilting was not properly between 2015 and 2018.

Durga Puja organisers will get honorarium of ₹1.10 lakh: Mamata
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that the Durga Puja communities this year will receive an honorarium of ₹1.10 lakh, a hike of almost 30% from last year's ₹85,000. The announcement made ahead of the West Bengal Assembly polls received criticism from the Opposition parties, who described the honorarium hike as a 'bribe'. Stating that there are about 45,000 Durga Puja clubs, Ms. Banerjee said that the honorarium is going to cost ₹495 crore to the State exchequer. The CM also urged electricity supply companies to give an 80% rebate to the clubs. 'Last year the sum was ₹85,000, this year how much you want?' asked Ms. Banerjee while addressing a gathering in Kolkata's Netaji Indoor Stadium. 'Let us fix it as ₹1.10 lakh this year,' she added. Highlighting the significance of the festival to the people of the State, the Chief Minister urged the organisers to focus on crowd management, and she advised the clubs not to compete with each other to draw large crowds. The clubs should engage more volunteers and have separate entry and exits at Durga Puja pandals, Ms. Banerjee said. The festival will be held in the last week of September, and the Durga Puja Carnival will be held on October 5. Ms. Banerjee urged the Durga Puja organisers to help the migrant workers who have returned to the State after facing harassment in BJP-ruled states. 'I request the committees to help migrant workers, who are returning to Bengal after facing torture in BJP-ruled states.' LoP hits out Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, said that the CM can even pay ₹2 lakh to Durga Puja, but before that, she should pay the Dearness Allowance (DA) to employees. 'She should increase the salary of ICDS, Anganwadi workers, civic police volunteers and other contractual staff,' Mr. Adhikari said. The LoP also predicted that before the Assembly polls, Ms. Banerjee would hike the honorarium given to imams and muezzins by ₹500. The honorarium to Durga Puja clubs has on several occasions been challenged before the Calcutta High Court, and the State government has argued that the funds deemed to be used for increase in awareness on several issues. The Mamata Banerjee government had introduced an honorarium to committees organising Durga Puja in 2018, promising a sum of ₹10,000 to each club. In seven years the grant has increased by 11 times.

Oppn leader demands white paper on land conversions
Porvorim: Opposition leader Yuri Alemao on Thursday demanded that town and country planning minister Vishwajit Rane table a white paper detailing the total land that has been converted under Sections 16(b), 17(2), and 39A of the Town and Country Planning Act. While promising to answer the opposition's queries, Rane said that during his tenure, 16-17 lakh sqm of land has been converted, compared to 9.5 crore sqm under the Regional Plan 2021 and 1.5 crore sqm in the year before he became the TCP minister. 'I will answer all questions on Aug 7 in the House. To the extent that I can give answers, I will provide them,' Rane said. 'The leader of the opposition has asked for a white paper, I will give him the numbers.' Alemao accused Rane of permitting the conversion of eco-sensitive lands for settlement, which would cause irreversible damage to the environment. Alemao demanded a freeze on large residential colonies in villages. 'In 12 years, BJP has done enough damage. Zoning changes are done to benefit the influential and the common Goans are kept in the dark,' Alemao said. 'We need a white paper on all the conversions.' He said that land conversions and large housing projects have caused stress to villages, roads, and water and electricity supply. 'No scientific study was carried out to determine the carrying capacity of Goa, of its towns and villages. The TCP Act was formulated for structured and regulated growth,' Alemao said.
