Kobe romp into AFC Champions League last 16 as Japan teams dominate - World
Japanese champions Vissel Kobe romped into the knockout stages of the AFC Champions League on Tuesday, a 4-0 victory over Shanghai Port guaranteeing their place in the last 16 with a match to spare.
Two second-half goals in a minute from Yuya Kuwasaki and Koya Yuruki added to Yoshinori Muto's 11th-minute strike to give Vissel a deserved 3-0 lead.
Vissel's Yuya Osako saw his penalty saved in the 78th minute but swept home three minutes later from a free-kick to complete the scoring and put Kobe top of the 12-team league with 16 points. The top eight advance to the knockouts.
It was a great matchday seven for Japan as all three of their representatives in Asia's premier club competition reached the last 16.
Kawasaki Frontale sealed their passage with a comfortable 4-0 win at South Korea's Pohang Steelers.
Shin Yamada gave Frontale a 38th-minute lead before second-half strikes from Yasuto Wakizaka, So Kawahara and Erison secured the points.
The third Japanese representatives, last year's beaten finalists Yokohama F. Marinos, play on Wednesday but progressed without kicking a ball on 13 points courtesy of Tuesday's results.
Also through on 13 points are South Korea's Gwangju FC, despite losing 3-1 at Shandong Taishan who kept their qualification hopes alive.
All the goals came in a frantic first 45 minutes with Valeri Qazaishvili, Zeca and Cryzan netting for Shandong and Lee Min-gi pulling one back for Gwangju.
Malaysia's Johor Darul Ta'zim put one foot in the last 16 with a 2-1 win at Australia's rock-bottom Central Coast Mariners, who have only one point from seven matches.
Alvaro Gonzalez was the hero for the visitors, scoring two second-half goals either side of Alou Kuol's equaliser.
Mariners played the whole of the second half with 10 men after 18-year-old goalkeeper Dylan Peraic-Cullen was red-carded for scything through Arif Aiman just outside the box in first-half injury time.
Johor are on 11 points and look almost certain to progress to the last 16, needing just a draw at home to Pohang Steelers next week to be certain. However, they could lose and still go through if other results go their way.
The West Zone teams have already played seven matches, with Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr and the other star-studded Saudi Arabian sides -- Al Ahli and Al Hilal -- already reaching the last 16.
The final round of league fixtures takes place in both zones next week.
The last-16 matches will be played over two legs in March. Saudi Arabia will then host the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final from April 25 to May 4.

Manchester City signs Reijnders from Milan to complete $150M spending spree - World
Manchester City concluded a $150 million spending spree ahead of the Club World Cup by announcing the signing of Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Reijnders moved for an initial fee of 55 million euros ($63 million) and is the second midfielder — after France playmaker Rayan Cherki — to join City in the special June 1-10 transfer window created to allow sides in the 32-team Club World Cup to reshape their squads. City paid Lyon $41 million for Cherki and also signed Algeria left back Rayan Aït-Nouri from Wolverhampton for $42 million. After deciding not to push to sign Florian Wirtz — the Germany playmaker is close to joining Liverpool, according to reports in the British media — City has spent around the same amount on three players. Add this latest splurge to an outlay of more than $200 million in the winter transfer window and City has already spent at least $350 million on players in 2025 to provide manager Pep Guardiola with a squad capable of reclaiming the Premier League title from Liverpool. Breakthrough season Reijnders has just been named as the best midfielder in Serie A after a breakthrough campaign in which he scored 15 goals and added five assists across all competitions for Milan, which endured a dismal season and failed to qualify for Europe. He joined Milan from AZ Alkmaar in 2023 for a fee of around 20 million euros (then $22.4 million) and recently signed a contract extension through to June 2030. That's the length of his contract at City, too. City is releasing De Bruyne to end his 10-year stint at the club and now has Reijnders and Cherki to link up with Rodri in an enticing midfield set-up. Reijnders said he was 'ecstatic' to be joining City. 'It is also a dream come true to play in the Premier League,' he said. 'This league has seen many of the best Dutch players perform through the years and it's an inspiration to follow in their footsteps.' City director of football Hugo Viana said Reijnders — who specializes in being a ball-carrying midfielder — will add 'extra energy, composure and creativity to our midfield.' City announced the transfer of Reijnders a day after the special transfer window closed but appears to have signed him in time for him to play in the new-look, 32-team Club World Cup, which starts on Saturday. City is in the same group as Juventus, Al Ain and Wydad Casablanca and its first match is on June 18. Barbora Krejcikova's preparations for her Wimbledon title defence suffered a major setback as the Czech crashed to a shock defeat against Rebecca Sramkova at Queen's Club on Tuesday. Krejcikova beat Italy's Jasmine Paolini in three sets in last year's Wimbledon final to win her second Grand Slam crown. Ahly target winning all games at Club World Cup: Moroccan defender Dari
Ahly will open their campaign in the first match of FIFA's newly expanded 32-team tournament against the US outfit Inter Miami in Miami on Sunday. 'We are preparing strongly for the World Cup confrontations with full concentration. We arrived early in the USA and adapted quickly to the atmosphere,' Dari told the club's official website late on Monday. 'We train well and work hard to win all games. The opening match will be a strong one, and we should be at full concentration to win,' he added. Ahly have been drawn in Group A alongside Palmeiras (Brazil), FC Porto (Portugal), and Inter Miami (USA). Dari said that Ahly is focusing on all the group games, adding that every match has its own circumstances, stressing that winning the opening game will be a big boost ahead of next games.
