Celtics trade rumors: Jrue Holiday ‘linked' to new west coast team
It's no secret that Jrue Holiday is available on the trade market this offseason as the Celtics look to reduce a daunting luxury tax bill. The veteran guard is already expected to draw interest from the Mavericks and Clippers in the coming weeks. However, one other potential suitor has emerged according to NBA insider Jake Fischer: the Sacramento Kings. The Kings are under new management this offseason in general Scott Perry. The team also lacks a true starting caliber point guard after dealing away De'Aaron Fox to the Spurs at the trade deadline. That puts in Perry in the market for a new point guard with the Kings linked to Holiday and a couple of other former Celtics point guards in Marcus Smart (Wizards) and Malcolm Brogdon (free agent), according to Fischer. Advertisement Holiday is in year two of a four-year extension that he signed with Boston last spring but he's set to earn an average of $34 million over the next three seasons. That big salary make him a candidate to be moved as Boston works to get under the second apron ($207 million) next season. MassLive broke down seven potential landing spots for Holiday last month, which did not include the Kings since there is no obvious path to a deal. DeMar DeRozan ($24.5 million) and some salary filler would work for Holiday under CBA trade rules but bringing aboard a 35-year-old DeRozan who lives in the midrange doesn't exactly fall in line with the Celtics offensive philosophy under Joe Mazzulla. There are other potential combinations where the math works (Malik Monk and another midrange salary) but Holiday would be an expensive third player for the Kings alongside Zach LaVine and Domantas Sabonis. Smart ($21.5 million) and Brogdon (likely available for portion of mid-level exception) would certainly be less expensive targets. Brooklyn is the only team that could absorb Holiday's deal outright into their cap space. Otherwise, the other team involved in acquiring Holiday would need to send out at least $25.9 million in salary for the trade to work under CBA rules if it goes through after July 1st. Holiday is set to make $32.4 million next season. More Celtics content Read the original article on MassLive.

Bill Simmons drops Lakers conspiracy theory to give Knicks fans hope
The post Bill Simmons drops Lakers conspiracy theory to give Knicks fans hope appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Knicks extended their postseason hopes Thursday night with a dominant 111-94 win over the Indiana Pacers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals, forcing a Game 6 and shifting the pressure back to Indiana. Now trailing 3-2 in the series, the Knicks will look to even the series on the road and set up a decisive Game 7. Advertisement But in the aftermath of New York's latest win, NBA analyst Bill Simmons suggested the league may have more than basketball on its mind. Speaking on The Bill Simmons Podcast, the longtime NBA commentator floated a conspiracy theory that draws a connection to one of the league's most infamous playoff controversies — the 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings. 'You know, if Indiana wins one more game, we're going to have an Indiana vs. Oklahoma City Finals,' Simmons said. 'But if the Knicks win the series, we'll have Knicks in the Finals. And if you've noticed from ratings and interest, it's a little more interesting nationally when there's a New York team in the Finals.' Simmons referenced Game 6 of the 2002 West Finals, when the Kings were one win away from eliminating the Lakers. That game has since drawn widespread scrutiny for its officiating. The Lakers attempted 40 free throws to Sacramento's 25, including a 27-to-9 disparity in the fourth quarter alone. Advertisement Disgraced former referee Tim Donaghy later accused officials of manipulating the game to force a Game 7 and ensure the NBA avoided a Sacramento-New Jersey Finals matchup. 'I'd like to bring you back to the year 2002… David Stern was like, 'Not on my watch,'' Simmons said. 'We did not get a Sacramento–New Jersey Finals. I just would be careful. Let's be careful out there for Game 6 if you're wagering.' Bill Simmons suggests NBA could favor Knicks as ratings fuel speculation Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports Simmons hinted that with the Pacers now one win away from the NBA Finals, the Knicks may receive favorable treatment in Game 6 to extend the series — not unlike what he believes the Lakers benefitted from in 2002. Advertisement The theory gains additional intrigue in light of the television ratings the Eastern Conference Finals has delivered. Game 1 between the Knicks and Pacers was the most-watched Eastern Conference Finals opener since 2018, while Game 3 drew 7.09 million viewers, the highest for a Game 3 in the East Finals since LeBron James' Cleveland Cavaliers faced the Atlanta Hawks in 2015. Those numbers far outpaced anything involving small-market teams in recent memory. New York's Game 5 win was powered by a commanding performance from Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns. Brunson scored 32 points on 12-for-18 shooting, while Towns added 24 points and 13 rebounds. Their efforts kept New York alive as the series now shifts back to Indianapolis for Game 6. The Pacers remain one win away from their first NBA Finals appearance since 2000. But as Simmons suggests, the broader implications of market size and national interest could loom large over Saturday's contest. Game 6 tips off at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Lakers fans will mock Mike Bibby's 2002 Western Conference Finals claims
The post Lakers fans will mock Mike Bibby's 2002 Western Conference Finals claims appeared first on ClutchPoints. Over two decades after the contentious 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Sacramento Kings and the Los Angeles Lakers, Mike Bibby has revisited the series on his podcast, reigniting one of the most polarizing debates in NBA playoff history. But his emotional recollections are likely to be met with ridicule from Lakers fans who remain steadfast in the legitimacy of their team's championship run. Advertisement During a recent episode of the Straight Game Podcast with co-hosts Eddie House and Ty Ellis, Bibby reflected on the series that many consider one of the most controversial in league history. He claimed the Kings were on the verge of celebrating a Western Conference title and that the series was effectively stolen from them. 'We like they were getting our champagne ready in the locker room to celebrate winning the Western Conference and you know we kind of sh*t the bed,' Bibby said. 'I still, the Robert Horry shot… I still can't watch it.' Mike Bibby recalls missed chances, Game 7 collapse, and rare postgame interview with Kobe Bryant Bibby referred to Game 4 of the series, where Horry hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer that tied the series 2-2. The Kings had led the game late, and Horry's shot shifted the momentum back to the Lakers. Advertisement 'That was our championship and we went to game seven. It just shows you that we are a better team,' Bibby continued. 'If you watch some of those highlights, you could see like Shaq's face, Kobe's face, rest in peace, they're like it's over.' The Kings lost Game 7 at home in overtime after shooting just 2-for-13 from beyond the arc and missing 14 free throws. Bibby acknowledged their struggles, saying, 'We kind of sh*t the bed in Game 7… under 50% from the free throw line.' He also recalled the postgame interview that featured both him and Kobe Bryant, expressing surprise that a losing player would be asked to speak alongside the series victor. Kings' lingering frustration over 2002 WCF clash meets firm pushback from Lakers fans Bibby's retelling reflects a broader sentiment among Sacramento fans that the series was marred by poor officiating. Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals remains a flashpoint in NBA history, with widespread criticism of the officiating. The Lakers attempted 40 free throws to Sacramento's 25, including a 27-9 disparity in the fourth quarter alone. Former referee Tim Donaghy, who was later imprisoned for his role in a betting scandal, alleged that the game was manipulated to force a Game 7. Advertisement Despite the controversy, the Lakers went on to win the series and complete a three-peat by defeating the New Jersey Nets in the NBA Finals. To many Los Angeles fans, the Kings' complaints amount to little more than excuses for a team that couldn't finish the job at home in Game 7. Bibby's remarks are unlikely to shift public perception in Los Angeles. For Lakers fans, the 2002 run remains a symbol of dominance during the Shaq-Kobe era — while Sacramento's continued grievances are seen as the echoes of a dynasty that never was.
