PANATHINAIKOS' exit from the Champions League at the hands of Rangers has been labelled as a "harsh elimination" by the Greek media.
That's in part because the Athens side HAMMERED their Glasgow rivals, according to one national outlet.

Djeidi Gassama scored his second Gers goal as Panathinaikos and Rangers drew 1-1 on the night in Greece, resulting in a 3-1 aggregate win for the Light Blues.
Russell Martin's men now progress to the Champions League third qualifying round where they will face Czech club Viktoria Plzen.
Panathinaikos had the upper hand in terms of possession and chances created for much of the tie, both in the first half at Ibrox last week in the first leg and for an hour of the match last night.
However, it seems there was a feeling amongst the Greek media that last season's Super League runners-up were the underdogs.
Leading Athens-based newspaper Ethnos depicted Panathinaikos as trying to cause a "big upset" by beating Rangers - and singled out Gers goalkeeper Jack Butland for praise.
They said the Greek giants will be left with a "bitter taste in the mouth" after seeing their domination fail to translate into a win.
"Panathinaikos fought with all its might for the big upset but lost its way to the bright lights of the Champions League," they wrote.
"It created great chances, took the lead, but a moment of inaction proved decisive.
"The final 1-1 with Rangers at OAKA (combined with the 2-0 of the Scots at Ibrox) sealed the elimination from the second qualifying round and left a bitter taste in the mouth of the Greens, who saw their effort not rewarded."
They added: "Panathinaikos managed to exert tremendous pressure on Rangers for more than 30 minutes.

"However, once again - as happened at Ibrox a week ago - it was ineffective. Partly due to the midfielders' mistakes, partly due to the Rangers' excellent - for the second match in a row - goalkeeper, Rui Vitoria's team was deprived of one, two, even three goals."
And Ethnos concluded its report with: "No matter what Rui Vitoria and his players tried to do next, it did not bear fruit and Panathinaikos suffered a harsh elimination."
Kathimerini, one of the main national newspapers in Greece, wrote that the Athens side HAMMERED Rangers for most of the game - just as they had in the first leg.
Their report said: "Panathinaikos 'hammered' Rangers again for an hour, but again missed a bunch of chances.
"And when they found the goal they were looking for they didn't have time to build on it as the Scots equalised immediately."
Ta Nea (The News), a popular national media outlet, described Panathinaikos' as "ineffective and frivolous" both going forward and at the back, and that their approach for the last 25 minutes generally was naive.
They said: "The Greens failed to overturn the 2-0 defeat and in Athens they were once again ineffective and frivolous in attack and defence respectively.
"The Clover dominated the first half, missed a lot of opportunities, scored first in the match, however, the Rangers' quick response was the reason that the switch was flipped in the second half and the exclusion from the continuation of the top inter-club competition came as a natural continuation of the nervous play of the home team in the last 25 minutes."
In a separate report, Ta Nea opined that Panathinaikos' elimination dramatically alters the narrative of their season already.
That's because making it through this round would have guaranteed European group stage football at either the Champions League or Europa League.
But this is a spoil of war that Rangers will enjoy, with Panathinaikos now scheduled to face Shakhtar Donetsk or Besiktas in the Europa League third qualifying round.
Ta Nea said: "We should note that by qualifying against the Scots, the Greens would not only make their summer but also their entire season.
"This is because they would ensure their presence in the League Phase of the Europa League and would have two opportunities to achieve the ultimate and shake the sheet in the top inter-club competition.
"However, with the elimination by Rangers, they are no longer even certain of the League Phase of the Conference League.
"And as if that weren't enough, they also face a very difficult task in the third qualifying round of the Europa League."

Liverpool transfer news: New Alexander Isak development as Arne slot breaks silence

Arne Slot's Liverpool aren't slowing down as they look to further bolster a squad which won the Premier League title in their manager's first season at the helm Liverpool have been one of the busiest Premier League clubs this summer but they might not be done. The Reds have already broken the league's transfer record once, and there's a chance they could do it again before the transfer window shuts. ‌ That record-breaking £116million move for Florian Wirtz is just one of a number of high-profile deals. Arne Slot's title-holders have also added the likes of Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike as they look to defend their crown. ‌ The big remaining question concerns whether Alexander Isak will move to Anfield. Newcastle don't want to part ways with the Sweden international if they can avoid it, but another record bid could force their hand. ‌ Liverpool will begin their league campaign at home to Bournemouth on August 15. That leaves them with a fortnight to get more business done. There have also been sales, and there could be more to come. Here are Mirror Football 's latest lines on the ins and outs around Anfield. Slot's response to Diaz deal Arne Slot has spoken for the first time about Luis Diaz's Liverpool exit. Colombian international Diaz has completed a £65.5m move to Bayern Munich, despite the Reds appearing keen to keep him around. "Luis is a player we won the league with and there's a reason we won it with him because he's a very good player," Slot said during Liverpool's pre-season tour. "It's always disappointing to see someone like that leave, to a certain extent. "But on the other hand, we've sold him for a lot of money and, as you probably know even better than I do, this football club brings in unbelievable signings over the years, but part of the strategy is also that once in a while we have to sell someone. I think we did great business by bringing in Lucho for a number of years and then selling him for a very good profit." ‌ Isak's comments on his future Liverpool target Alexander Isak helped Newcastle secure a Champions League return with his goals last season. Before the end of the campaign, though, he spoke of a desire to win silverware - and a league title may currently be beyond the Magpies given the spending power of their rivals. "I've said many times, I don't really look too much or think too much about my future," Isak said in the spring. "But yeah, I've said I'm happy here and we are contenders for titles, which is what you want to win as a football player. ‌ "The chances are there (to win things). Yeah, as I've said, I'm not thinking about the summer, but that will be a talking point when the season is finished." Isak training in Spain While Liverpool wait to learn if they will be able to land Isak, the striker has begun training with former club Real Sociedad. The striker is working his way back from the minor injury which has kept him out of Newcastle's pre-season tour, with Sky Sports reporting the Magpies were aware of his plans to head to San Sebastian. ‌ "He is still our player. He's contracted to us. We, to a degree, control what is next for him," Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said earlier in the week. "I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control" Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Txiki Begiristain leaves role as Manchester City director of foootball

Begiristain announced he would be leaving the club in October 2024 and Hugo Viana is set to take over his role ahead of the new season. The 60-year-old joined City back in 2012 and saw the club achieve 21 trophies during his reign, including seven Premier League titles, two FA Cups and their first Champions League. City will celebrate Begiristain's achievements around the Manchester derby on September 14, where he will be the special guest for the match. Begiristain spent seven years as Barcelona's technical director between 2003 and 2010 before joining City and played an important role during Pep Guardiola's time in Spain as well as in England. Guardiola previously said a part of him will leave when Begiristain decides to walk away. He said: 'Part of me is leaving, I would say. 'A friend of mine and one of the architects of one of the best teams ever from Barcelona, and now here.'

Tottenham targeting loan move for Portugal midfielder Joao Palhinha

Palhinha joined Bayern from Fulham last summer in a deal worth up to £47.4million, but endured a difficult debut campaign in Germany. The Portugal midfielder struggled with injury problems and only made six starts in the Bundesliga when fit under Bayern boss Vincent Kompany, which has opened the door for a temporary move back to London with Tottenham. Spurs have plenty of options in midfield, but have multiple competitions to deal with in the 2025-26 season after their Europa League victory in May secured Champions League qualification and the addition of Palhinha would be a boost for new head coach Thomas Frank. Palhinha, who turned 30 earlier this month, was linked with a transfer to Tottenham before he signed for Bayern. The former Sporting Lisbon midfielder enjoyed a successful two years at Fulham, where he made 79 appearances and scored eight times to become a fan favourite at Craven Cottage. Spurs secured the services of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham at the start of July, but failed in their pursuit of Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White and will now hope to land Palhinha on a season-long loan.
