BN will work hard to recapture Kukusan seat – Salleh
KUKUSAN (June 17): Barisan Nasional (BN) is determined to recapture the Kukusan state seat in the upcoming state election after losing narrowly in the last election, said
Sabah BN treasurer Datuk Sri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.
He described the seat as winnable and strategically important for BN in the east coast of Sabah.
'The loss last time was by a small margin. That tells us the people of Kukusan are still with us — we just need to work harder and stay consistent in our outreach,' he said after attending the Radu Tatap Radu grassroots engagement program held in Kukusan on Tuesday.
Salleh emphasized that BN's strategy moving forward will focus on strengthening its grassroots machinery, understanding the people's concerns, and offering practical solutions — especially in areas such as infrastructure, job creation and public services.
'Through programs like Radu Tatap Radu, we are not just reconnecting with voters — we are rebuilding trust and reaffirming our commitment to serve. This is part of our long-term effort, not a seasonal campaign,' he added.
The BN treasurer also noted that cooperation under the Unity Government will allow BN to bring more development and stability to Kukusan and the surrounding areas.
Among the activities lined up for the program were the distribution of engine oil to motorcyclists by Umno Youth Kalabakan, a morning Zumba session and telematch games organized by Puteri Umno Kalabakan, a cooking demonstration by Wanita Umno Kalabakan, culminating in the grand finale — 'Malam Santai PDM Sentosa'.

He said, at the time, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) was leading the State Government, with Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor still a member of Bersatu Sabah within the GRS coalition. Barisan Nasional (BN) and Hajiji were in the same Cabinet, while Warisan was in the State Opposition. ''Langkah Kinabalu' was an internal dispute between BN and Bersatu/GRS over power. 'Warisan was not in Hajiji's Cabinet and did not have the numbers to bring down the Government. Blaming Warisan is simply an attempt to twist the facts,' he said in a statement, Friday. Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 By: FMT Text Size: Warisan still a Sabah party, says Shafie Kuala Lumpur: Former Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal has asserted that Warisan remains a Sabah party, dismissing claims that it lost that identity when it expanded to West Malaysia four years ago. Shafie, the Warisan President, maintains that the party has always been consistent about fighting for Sabah and is ready to share its vision and mission for Sabahans in the upcoming state election. 'It's meaningless to be known as a local party by name but our voice is not (outspoken on) local (issues). 'Warisan is a local party,' he stressed in an interview with FMT in response to a claim by former Warisan women's chief Datuk Norazlinah Arif that it has lost that status. Shafie said the party's venture into the peninsula was aimed at raising 'awareness' among Malaysians about the abilities of Sabah parties beyond the state, which includes expanding its presence to West Malaysia. The seven-term Semporna MP also pointed out that other Sabah parties like Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Upko had also contested in West Malaysia in the past. 'When Warisan contested in the peninsula, some parties there accused us of being disruptive. But when their parties contest in Sabah, it's not?' he said, accusing certain West Malaysian parties of being hypocritical. Norazlinah had claimed that Warisan's chest thumping about being a local Sabah party did not hold water since the party had ventured into Peninsular Malaysia, even fielding candidates there in the 2022 general election (GE15). The two-term Kunak assemblyman said the move reflected a shift away from putting Sabah first, and was a strategy to project Shafie as a prime ministerial candidate. After losing the 2020 Sabah polls, Warisan officially expanded its wings to West Malaysia in December 2021, with Shafie promising he would be a 'prime minister for all' if he were to land the top post. The party contested in six seats in the March 2022 Johor state election, and also fielded candidates in 24 parliamentary and 16 state seats in West Malaysia in GE15. All of its candidates, including former MCA president and federal minister Ong Tee Keat, failed to put up a formidable challenge, losing their deposits in the process. It's final — we're going solo, no BN pact Shafie said Warisan's decision to go solo and contest all 73 seats up for grabs in the state polls was final, refuting speculation that the party will be working with Barisan Nasional. 'Sometimes, pictures of me with (BN chairman) Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, (Sabah BN chief) Bung Moktar Radin and (Perikatan Nasional chairman) Muhyiddin Yassin appear online. 'Why look at pictures (to speculate about a possible alliance for the state election)? These people should just listen to the announcement I've already made (that Warisan is going solo),' he said. Shafie, who is also two-term assemblyman for Senallang, said Warisan's objective in going solo was to show its readiness to form the next Sabah government on its own, like Berjaya and PBS had done in the past. ‘Too many tigers in one hill' Alexander Nanta Linggi on Sabah politics, unlike Sarawak with structured hierarchy

By TASNIM LOKMAN AND KOUSALYA SELVAM 15 Aug 2025 05:55pm Gabungan Parti Sarawak Secretary-General Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi SHAH ALAM - As Sabah heads for a state election, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Secretary-General Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi gave his take on the state's political scene describing it as 'crowded with leaders vying for the top post, unlike Sarawak's more structured hierarchy'. Speaking during Sinar Daily's Top News Podcast titled 'Billions Spent but Are Our Roads Any Safer?', Nanta drew comparisons between the political cultures of the two East Malaysian states, noting that in Sabah, there were many leaders on the same level where everybody deserves to become the chief minister. "In Sabah, there are so many leaders on the same level. Everybody deserves to become the chief minister.... While in Sarawak, it doesn't mean nobody else deserves, but people understand the hierarchy. In Sabah, it goes like a Chinese saying where maybe there are too many tigers in one hill," he said. He, who is also Works Minister, drew a contrast between Sabah's competitive political climate and Sarawak's stability under Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, whom he described as an inclusive leader with a clear development mission. 'People know their place and their responsibility. Under Abang Johari's leadership, we know what we're supporting, and it's always for the good of Sarawak,' he added. Nanta, who rarely comments on Sabah's political affairs, admitted that his visits to the state are infrequent and typically focused on his ministerial duties. 'I seldom go to Sabah, and when I do, it's to construction sites. I have many friends there, but very little opportunity to talk politics, so what I know is basically what's in the media," he noted. Still, his remarks touch on a long-standing reality in Sabah, a state where shifting alliances and frequent changes in leadership have defined the political landscape for decades. 'We know that the GPS government under Abang Johari's leadership is the leadership we want to support because he is very inclusive and works very hard. "The slogan 'Sarawak First' reflects a clear mission to uplift the people's living standards through economic development," he said. He stressed that the 'Sarawak First' motto should not be misconstrued as turning away from the rest of the country. Instead, it reflects a focused commitment to advancing Sarawak's socio-economic position through targeted development policies, infrastructure investment and economic growth initiatives. While maintaining strong ties and cooperation with other states, the GPS government's priority remains to uplift the livelihoods of Sarawakians and close the gap in living standards with more developed regions. 'It doesn't mean we do not care for our friends all over the country. But our priority is to raise Sarawak's socio-economic standing," he said.
