Miki Shan N races to Gold Cup and Saucer win
Montague's Corey MacPherson and his horse Miki Shan N won the 66th Gold Cup and Saucer race on Saturday night in Charlottetown. This is the first Gold Cup and Saucer victory for MacPherson. The race carries a $100,000 prize purse. He said he was thinking of his late grandfather Glenn Taylor, a noted horseman who died in 2013. Taylor got him into the sport. "Oh yeah, he followed me the whole time," he said. "When I was a little kid he always had horses around and I was at his place all the time. I caught the bug early." MacPherson said he followed the lead horse, Poseidon Seelster, driven by Bob McClure, before getting around for the win. He said all Gold Cups are a scramble at the start before the horses settle in. He said he knew Poseidon Seelster was the horse to follow. "And he took me right into the race and it worked out perfectly," MacPherson said. MacPherson said his late grandfather was with him during the race. "He's saying just good job, he patted me on the back," he said. Miki Shan N won in 1:51.2. Bee Two Bee, driven by Jason Hughes, placed third.

Jockey John Velazquez guides She Feels Pretty to $750K prize at E.P. Taylor
She Feels Pretty was last at Woodbine two years ago, winning the Natalma Stakes. Since then, she has become one of the top turf mares in North America. She returned to Toronto on Saturday and bagged another big prize, the $750,000 E.P. Taylor Stakes. Article content But it was not easy for the four-year-old filly. Ridden by John Velazquez, She Feels Pretty sat a third for the early part of the 1 ¼ mile race, but she was slightly hit by another horse, causing her a brief discomfort. She moved up nicely around the turn and took command in the stretch. Nearly catching her, however, was English invader Diamond Rain, who, despite being slow out of the gate, charged very quickly in the stretch and lost by just a head at the wire. Article content Article content Article content Trainer Cherie DeVaux decided to bring She Feels Pretty to Woodbine to try and get a guaranteed spot in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf rather than wait for the Flower Bowl at Saratoga on Aug. 30. Article content 'It was a natural progression from the Diana (at Saratoga, where she finished a close second),' she said. 'The last couple of weeks, she's been training so well. It made sense to come here now rather than wait a couple of weeks for the Flower Bowl.' Article content She Feels Pretty was sent off at 2-5 and is now eight-for-12 lifetime. Article content CARRYING MOMENTUM: Kevin Attard's trips to the winner's circle didn't end after the King's Plate as he swept the final two stakes on Woodbine's lucrative Saturday card. Article content The veteran trainer sent out Gas Me Up to win the $200,000 King Edward Stakes. Ridden by Flavien Prat, Gas Me Up sat well back early in the one-mile turf race as a speed duel ensued. He had 15 lengths to make up in the final half mile but was able to eat that up quickly, grabbing command in mid-stretch and holding off a closing Wyoming Bill to win by a length. It was the fourth win in eight starts for the five-year-old gelding. Article content Article content Then in the $150,000 Soaring Free Stakes for two-year-olds, Two Out Hero scored as the 6-5 favourite. Ridden by Rafael Hernandez, Two Out Hero sat right behind pacesetter Casson early in the 6 ½-furlong race. He stayed right at the rail and in the stretch, he found a seam and took command en route to a 1 ½-length win. Article content Attard indicated Two Out Hero would likely start in the Summer Stakes on Sept. 13, a Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf qualifier. Hernandez also rode Simcoe to a dominant win in the $150,000 Bold Venture Stakes. Simcoe grabbed command early in the 6 ½-furlong race and held a comfortable margin the rest of the way, winning in the end by five lengths. A five-year-old gelding, Simcoe is now six-for-18 and has won four of his past five for trainer Katerina Vassilieva. Article content In the $150,000 Catch A Glimpse Stakes for the fillies, Corsia Veloce had a good tracking spot early and grinded her way to an 11-1 score with Fraser Aebly aboard. The daughter of Practical Joke is now two-for-two for trainer Josie Carroll. The race is the main prep for the Natalma Stakes on Sept. 13.

Apprentice jockey Pietro Moran wins $1 million King's Plate aboard Mansetti
Last September, in one of the lowest-class races you can find in the area, Pietro Moran suffered a significant injury. Almost a year later, he captured Canada's biggest race. Article content The 20-year-old, still an apprentice jockey, won the $1 million King's Plate on Saturday aboard Mansetti in emphatic, front-running fashion. And for a kid who grew up at Woodbine, the emotions simply flowed after. Article content Article content 'There's no words to describe it,' he said. 'What a dream.' 'I watched my first Plate 15 years ago. My dad (David) finished third. And every year since, I've been watching and dreaming for this moment. I never thought it would come this soon.' Article content While currently the leader in the jockey standings at Woodbine, Moran didn't get a lot of support from the bettors as Mansetti went off a 19-1. But as soon as the gate opened, Mansetti used his rail post position to full effect, coming out of the gate and taking a slight lead over Scorching in the 13-runner field. Article content While the first quarter went in a quick 23 seconds, Moran was able to relax Mansetti on the lead in the backstretch. Around the turn, Mansetti began to open up on Scorching and in mid-stretch, had a four-length lead. He ended up winning by 2 1/2 lengths as U.S. invader Tom's Magic closed from well back early to finish second and 7-2 race favourite Notorious Gangster found his best late to grab third. Article content 'It worked out perfect,' Moran said. 'He broke good. I just loved the way he relaxed today.' Article content 'I was talking to him the whole way, saying 'good boy, you're doing good,' and he responded to me.' Article content A son of Collected, Mansetti is named for a chain of pizza restaurants in Minnesota, home of owners Al and Bill Ulwelling. Article content He won two of his three starts as a two-year-old, including the Clarendon Stakes. He started this season with a really poor effort in New York but his return home resulted in a win in the Woodstock Stakes. Another mediocre effort followed in the Queenston Stakes but he gave a much better account of himself in the Marine Stakes, setting him up for the Plate try. Article content 'This horse trained really well. He was flying a bit under the radar,' trainer Kevin Attard said. 'This horse really changed from two to three.' Article content 'He showed a lot of talent from a young age and I thought he was going to be a really good horse. He was keen and eager early and we didn't think he'd stretch out. But he matured nicely into his three-year-old year and he has figured things out.' Article content It took Attard nearly 20 years to get his first King's Plate, now he can't stop winning them. Mansetti gave him his third win in the race, which he first captured with Moira in 2022 and then with Caitlinhergrtness last year. He was especially thrilled this time for Moran, who had to spend this past winter recovering from a broken back and fractured rib after a spill in a $5,000 claiming race at Fort Erie. Article content 'To win this with Pietro Moran, a young up-and-coming rider, is that much more special for me,' Attard said. 'He's a great kid. He's worked hard in our stable. And to get this kind of success this early, it makes it that much more special to me.' Article content Scorching ended fourth. David Moran also rode in the race and finished eighth aboard Willian T. Woodbine Oaks winner No Time was a disappointing ninth, while Plate Trial winner Sedbury's Ghost was 11th.
