Automaker reveals polarizing EV concept with unexpected silhouette and astounding range: 'I'm even more sold now'
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 has turned heads with its unique, futuristic design. While its bold looks aren't for everyone, the automaker isn't backing down. Instead, the company has given the beloved Ioniq a new style while potentially boosting its already impressive driving range.
Car experts were excited to have a first look at the electric vehicle at the Seoul Mobility Show. The updated Ioniq features several sleek design tweaks. As highlighted in a video tour by TFLEV, the front end appears wider and smoother, incorporating ultra-thin LED headlights.
Perhaps the most significant change is on the back, where the previous double-deck wing spoiler has been replaced with a more subtle, vintage duckbill spoiler. The shape gives it, as InsideEVs noted, "classic Porsche 911 vibes. … I'm even more sold now."
While powertrain specifics haven't been announced for the U.S. market, there's speculation it could receive the larger 84 kilowatt-hour battery recently introduced in other Hyundai and Kia EVs. The current Ioniq 6 already achieves up to 361 miles of Environmental Protection Agency-rated range with its 77.4 kWh battery.
Combining the refined aerodynamics with a bigger battery could push the 2026 model close to, or even past, an astounding 400 miles on a single charge. A sportier N line trim, borrowing cues from the performance-focused Ioniq 5 N, was also previewed.
For car buyers thinking of making the switch to electric, this updated Ioniq touts several advantages.
Besides the incredible range, drivers benefit from significant fuel savings compared to gasoline cars and drastically reduced maintenance costs with no fluid or oil changes. EVs also offer a quiet, smooth ride with instant acceleration and zero tailpipe pollution, which means cleaner air in our communities.
While EV battery production does have an environmental impact, studies show it's quickly offset by the lack of daily pollution from burning gasoline — a Tesla Model 3, for instance, becomes cleaner than a comparable gas car after just 13,500 miles.
According to the International Energy Agency, about 30 million tons of minerals are needed annually for EV batteries and other technology key to the clean energy transition. This figure is far less than the 16.5 billion tons of dirty energy sources taken from the earth each year.
The first look at the new Ioniq generated positive buzz.

MotorTrend noted that "extra accessory and window switches" on the driver's side was "a welcome change. … Less hand movement … mak[es] it not only more comfortable but also safer."
The host, Tommy Mica, described the Korean-market model primarily as "a design refresh" but acknowledged the possibility for significant battery upgrades.
If this sleeker, potentially longer-range Ioniq 6 makes it to the United States, it will represent a compelling evolution for an already strong electric sedan.

Lucid signs US graphite supply deal for EV batteries

Lucid Group has signed a second agreement with Graphite One for U.S.-sourced materials needed for lithium-ion batteries as the electric car maker seeks to strengthen its domestic supply chain, according to a June 4 press release. The latest agreement will provide Lucid and its battery cell suppliers with natural graphite from the Graphite Creek deposit north of Nome, Alaska, where Graphite One expects to begin production in 2028, per the release. The deal complements a 2024 pact in which Graphite One agreed to provide Lucid and its battery cell suppliers with graphite processed for use in battery anodes, starting in 2028, the release said. The active anode material (AAM) would come from Graphite One's planned plant in Warren, Ohio. Lucid has increased U.S.-based battery-electric-vehicle production as part of its strategy for weathering tariff uncertainty. Executives have highlighted the company's efforts to localize critical supplies, including the transition to Panasonic's Kansas battery facility and the sourcing of domestic graphite through partnerships with Graphite One and Syrah Resources. Beginning next year, Syrah will supply AAM from its production facility in Vidalia, Louisiana, under a three-year deal with Lucid, per the release. "A supply chain of critical materials within the United States drives our nation's economy, increases our independence against outside factors or market dynamics, and supports our efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of our vehicles," Lucid interim CEO Marc Winterhoff said in the release. Establishing supplier networks to build EV batteries has been a trend encompassing both traditional automakers and EV-only makers, such as Lucid. For example, Nissan Motor Corp and SK On signed a battery deal in March. The previous deal between Lucid and Graphite One is a non-binding supply agreement, pending Graphite One's commencement of AAM graphite production at the Ohio facility, according to the Canadian company's annual Management's Discussion and Analysis document, filed in April. The plant is Graphite One's first AAM factory, CEO Anthony Huston told Supply Chain Dive. If successful, the Lucid and Graphite One partnership would establish a U.S. source of graphite materials for EV batteries for the carmaker. However, Hunan Chenyu Fuji New Energy Technology, an AAM manufacturer based in Changsha, China, would play a critical role in supporting the partnership. Graphite One signed a technology licensing agreement and a consulting agreement with Chenyu last October, according to the MD&A document. Chenyu agreed to assist in the design, construction and operation of the Ohio facility. Additionally, Chenyu would receive quarterly royalties for its technology used in AAM manufacturing. Graphite One turned to Chenyu for the technology because it doesn't exist in the U.S., Huston said. 'There's no technology in the United States,' Huston said. 'And the reason why is because we haven't had it [graphite production] for 34 years. Once you stop producing something, you lose the ability to have the know-how, and the understanding, and the actual processing side that surrounds it.' Tesla's largest EV plant in the world suffers eighth straight month of declining demand as May sales sink 15%
Outbound volumes from Tesla's GigaShangai factory, which includes exports, sank 15% in May. The drop follows similarly bleak figures out of most of Europe. Although Tesla is increasingly viewed as an AI company, roughly three-fourths of its revenue and gross profit come from selling cars. With two-thirds of the second quarter now in the books, the chance Tesla's EV sales could rebound from its terrible start to the year is swiftly waning. On Thursday data continued to pour in from across the world showing demand for Elon Musk's cars is shrinking in most major markets. One sign of that emerged out of China, where aggregate sales of EVs made in Tesla's largest manufacturing plant worldwide suffered an eighth straight month of declines. According to China's CPCA industry association, outbound volumes from its GigaShangai factory, including exports, sank 15% in May to 61,662 vehicles. It follows similarly bleak figures out of most of Europe. Tesla may have successfully rebranded itself as an AI and robotics company in the eyes of investors, but EV sales still matter because they pay the bills. Its core business accounted for 72% of both revenue and gross profit in the first three months of this year, when volumes dropped to their lowest level in three years. Yet just as sales are crashing, the stock is paradoxically ballooning, with the price rallying by a third since April's terrible Q1 earnings. At $1 trillion, Musk's company is now the ninth most valuable company in the world, worth more than the next 15 largest global carmakers combined. Multiples well above 100 times next year's consensus earnings estimates, like Tesla's, are typically reserved for companies about to see stratospheric earnings growth. In this case, it reflects optimism that Musk is poised to capture Uber and Lyft's ride-hailing market with its robotaxi service scheduled to roll out in the second half across much of the United States. Yet there is no evidence its driverless technology already matches, let alone outperforms, autonomous vehicle leader Waymo, and one well-known Tesla bull sold the remainder of his stockholdings as a result. Citing valuation 'disconnected from underlying fundamentals', Future Fund money manager Gary Black said late last month he exited his position for the first time since 2021 given the risks are firmly to the downside. There are a few bright spots for Tesla car sales, like Norway, the world's most EV-friendly country, that remains loyal to the brand. Australia, a key market where Tesla must compete directly with Chinese brands for western consumers without the help of steep tariffs, likewise saw a 9% gain in May amid soaring demand for the refreshed Model Y. But these individual data points are not reflective of the broader Tesla trend. In most other parts of the world, the picture looks radically different. On Thursday, the United Kingdom followed Germany with an identical 36% decline in Tesla registrations for last month. That leaves Tesla EV sales trackers such as TroyTeslike, one of the most reliable, warning Q2 will likely see a drop of 11% to 395,000 cars in a best-case scenario for Tesla. Buc-ee's opens store an hour from New Orleans
Buc-ee's opens its massive travel center Monday in Mississippi just off Interstate 10 in Pass Christian. Why it matters: It's the popular chain's closest location to New Orleans (it's about one hour away) as it works on building its first two stores in Louisiana. The big picture: Buc-ee's is a cult favorite for road trippers. It's known for clean bathrooms, fresh food and beaver-themed merchandise. The Mississippi location has all the classics, the company says, including Texas barbeque, jerky, fudge, kolaches, pastries and snacks. It also has 120 gas pumps and 24 EV charging stations, according to a press release. The store opens at 6am and will be open 24 hours, seven days a week. By the numbers: It's the company's first store in Mississippi and has one of its largest footprints at 74,000 square feet. Its largest store, which it claims is the world's largest convenience station, is in Luling, Texas, at 75,593 square feet. Until now, the closest one to New Orleans was in Alabama near Mobile. Zoom out: Buc-ee's is a Texas-based chain that has been expanding its footprint nationally. Its first Louisiana store is expected to open in Ruston late next year, a company spokesperson tells Axios. A Lafayette store is projected to open in 2027, the spokesperson says. If you go: Expect crowds and traffic on I-10 near the new store. The Pass Christian location is at 8245 Firetower Road, which is accessed via exit 24 (Menge Avenue) on I-10.
