Notre Dame coach Mike Mickens is coming in for high praise
Mike Mickens is earning high praise for his recruiting skills. The Notre Dame defensive backs coach is also getting praise for his coaching skills.
Combine the secondary's play in 2024 and the Fighting Irish recruiting haul from this offseason, it's clear to see why.
Mickens is seen as being responsible for bringing DB recruits Joey O'Brien, Khary Adams, Ayden Pouncey, Chaston Smith and Nick Reddish.
We all know how dominant the 2024 secondary was, even after Benjamin Morrison got hurt. What Xavier Watts, Leonard Moore and Christian Gray did en route to the national title game was a sight to behold.
Mickens will be a coach to watch in 2025.

Abdou Toure, 5-star basketball recruit, trims list to 7
Abdou Toure, 5-star basketball recruit, trims list to 7 originally appeared on The Sporting News The class of 2026 prospects carry their recruitment quite differently depending on the sport. All but two five-star football recruits are already off the board, while only two five-star basketball recruits have announced their college futures. Notre Dame (Connecticut) five-star small forward Abdou Toure took a big step forward in joining the committed duo Wednesday, trimming his list to a top seven: Arkansas, Florida State, Louisville, Maryland, Oregon, Providence and UConn: Toure is rated the nation's No. 23 overall prospect, No. 9 small forward and No. 1 player in the state of Connecticut. What will the winning school be getting? Here's what 247Sports had to say about Toure as a prospect: "Toure is a powerful athlete on the wing who is an absolute wrecking ball going to the rim. He's dynamic in the open floor, has a good first-step in the half-court, and can bully his way through contact like few others in the class. He's a truly explosive leaper, who rises up with extreme quickness and power, and a violent finisher who can immediately change the momentum of a game with a single dunk." "While he can be physically dominant, his ball skills and overall feel for the game have shown consistent growth as well. He's gradually learning to pick his spots more efficiently as a driver, can rise-up into short pull-ups, and is starting to show a developing passing instinct. His three-ball, which is more of a set shot, remains more of a work in progress." "He is a good wing rebounder (6.6 per game), has all the physical tools to be a lockdown defender, and already has good playmaking metrics with 3 stocks per game (1.6 steals and 1.4 blocks)."

Oklahoma QB John Mateer named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list
The buzz surrounding the Oklahoma Sooners' new starting quarterback, John Mateer. He's been included on a number of watch lists this offseason and is a dark horse candidate to contend for the Heisman Trophy. On Wednesday, Mateer was included on another watch list, this time for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award goes to the offensive player of the year who played his high school or college football in the state of Texas or was born in Texas. Oklahoma Sooners quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray won the awards in back-to-back seasons during their Heisman runs in 2017 and 2018. The two were standout quarterbacks in Texas high school football and started their careers at universities in the state of Texas before transferring to Oklahoma. Mateer could be on a similar path with the Sooners in 2025. Though there are more unknowns on the offensive side of the ball than there were when OU entered the 2017 or 2018 seasons, Mateer could very well be the answer to a lot of the questions with his dual-threat ability. The former three-star quarterback has been lauded for his ability to make plays when things break down and for his competitive drive. And if he's able to translate that to Oklahoma and the SEC, Mateer could end the season in the running for a number of postseason awards. Oklahoma Sooners quarterback named to Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list
Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer isn't new to preseason award watch lists. He's already stockpiled nods for the Maxwell, Walter Camp, and Davey O'Brien awards this summer. On Tuesday, his name was added to a fourth watch list, breaking a tie with running back Jaydn Ott for the most recognitions on the team. Mateer and Ott are currently the only players on OU's roster with more than two watch list appearances. Mateer was named to the preseason watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award on Tuesday. The award is given to the nation's top quarterback who best exemplifies character, scholastic and athletic achievement. Mateer arrives, along with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, from Washington State, where the pair found success together last season. By all accounts, Mateer has been the leader this team needed on the field and in the locker room, and the new offense has the players excited for what this team can do when the Sooners have the ball this fall. Oklahoma is hoping to make some noise in their second season in the SEC. After making big changes all over the program this offseason, including Arbuckle and Mateer, the Sooners need a big season in their fourth year with head coach Brent Venables at the helm. Otherwise, even bigger changes could be coming to Norman next offseason.
