Nurse wins lottery three times in five years — all in April. ‘That's crazy'

Miami Herald22-04-2025

A Maryland nurse noticed an interesting pattern in her lottery plays over the past five years: she's won big three times when playing in mid-April, lottery officials said.
The latest win for the Owings Mills woman happened earlier this month when she won $50,000 from a Money Bags scratch off game, the Maryland Lottery said in an April 22 news release.
'I was thinking about my two biggest wins as we drove here today and realized that both of them were in April!' the woman told lottery officials when she claimed her prize. 'Now a third. That's crazy.'
What's more is each win seems to increase, she said. Five years ago she won $10,000 in April, then she won $20,000 two years ago.
'Every morning since then, I wake up and think for a moment that this has been a dream,' the woman told lottery officials. 'And a moment later I smile knowing that it really did happen.'
The lucky player purchased her ticket for $10 in lieu of dessert during lunch with a friend at a deli in Dundalk, lottery officials said.
The odds of winning a prize in the Money Bags game, which started in February, are 1 in 3.5, according to the game's web page.
Prizes range between $10 and $250,000, the lottery said.
Dundalk is about a 10-mile drive southeast from Baltimore.

Longtime lottery player buys 2 tickets in Maryland. They were both big winners

A longtime lottery player bought two tickets that turned out to be winners in Maryland, officials said. The winner, who's been playing the lottery for the last 15 years and crosses the state to rack up wins, bought two Bonus Match 5 tickets at a 7-Eleven in Waldorf, according to a June 5 news release by the Maryland Lottery. He had no idea the May 30 drawing would reveal that each ticket was holding a $50,000 prize, officials said. The man scanned the ticket at the store and saw it was a winner but stayed calm before heading home to share the news with his wife, officials said. 'I kept my cool and left the store right away,' he told lottery officials. When asked what he plans to do with the winnings, the lucky man said 'I'll get ahead on some bills, and the rest I'll save for a rainy day,' according to the release. Waldorf is about a 60-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.

Lottery player wins big — and plans to hit the mall. ‘I'm refreshing my wardrobe'

A lucky lottery player already has plans for some of the $50,000 he won playing Bonus Match 5 in Maryland. The Baltimore man, who works as a program counselor, has a shopping spree in his future, according to a June 4 news release from the Maryland Lottery. He told lottery officials that, 'I like clothes and I'm refreshing my wardrobe.' The man bought the Bonus Match 5 tickets at a food mart in Baltimore, lottery officials said. He scanned his tickets at a gas station later on, 'and the one said to 'Take to the Lottery,'' the man said, per lottery officials. He looked for guidance from the cashier, who 'told him he won big,' lottery officials said. The man, 'in disbelief,' kept running errands, but he did make one immediate purchase: getting his car detailed. 'I just wanted my car right and I got the works,' he told lottery officials. 'I didn't care how much it cost.' Along with the mall trip, the man may buy his wife a new car with the windfall, and he plans to save, lottery officials said.

Lottery player's screams scared family, but ‘fear quickly turned to shock' in MD

When a Maryland woman screamed at the top of her lungs to get her husband and daughter's attention, they feared the worst. They then rushed to her side, Maryland Lottery officials said in a June 5 news release. Their 'fear quickly turned to shock,' lottery officials said. The Calvert County woman told her family her screams were not of pain but excitement over a big lottery win, officials said. 'I'm surprised they could understand me,' she said. 'I was pretty hysterical. Just kept bouncing around the room.' The player won big on a $10 Lucky 7s Multiplier scratch-off ticket she bought at a St. Leonard store while running errands, lottery officials said. 'I picked this one because seven has always been my favorite number,' she told lottery officials. She scratched it later in the day and was baffled. 'I was sure something was wrong with the ticket when I saw the $77,777,' she said. 'It had to be a misprint.' But sure enough, after confirming her win by scanning her ticket using the lottery app on her phone, she realized 'her ticket was the real deal,' lottery officials said. The restaurant worker told lottery officials she and her husband now plan to treat extended family to a vacation. 'Having all of us together has always been our dream,' she said. Past attempts failed, as the financing was never there, the winner told lottery officials. 'With this, we can,' she said. St. Leonard is about a 70-mile drive south from Baltimore.
