The free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations concluded with India puts the United Kingdom at 'a genuine competitive advantage' in the advanced manufacturing sectors like automotive and machinery, UK secretary of state for business and trade Jonathan Reynolds told the House of Commons recently.
'This trade agreement is a huge economic win for the UK—the biggest trade deal since Brexit and the best deal that India has ever offered. As we have heard, it is estimated to increase bilateral trade by £25.5 billion (~$34.63 billion), UK GDP [gross domestic product] by £4.8 billion and wages by £2.2 billion each year in the long run. It will mean new opportunities for businesses in every part of the United Kingdom," Reynolds said during a debate on the bilateral FTA agreed last month.

India is traditionally a protectionist economy and the world's fastest growing big economy, he noted. 'Whether it is for goods or services….or the West Midlands as a whole, there is so much good stuff here to celebrate,' the minister said.
The UK-India Week begins next week as part of the annual India Global Forum (IGF) summit in London and Indian minister of commerce and industry Piyush Goyal is scheduled to address the forum. It will also mark the launch of the 2025 edition of the India Meets Britain Tracker', which analyses the investment flows by Indian companies into the United Kingdom.

TIL Creatives Representative Image New Delhi: Smartphone brands are increasingly tapping into the fast-growing eSports segment in India to increase visibility and boost sales in an otherwise muted market. Brands such as OnePlus, Realme, iQOO and Infinix are sponsoring large-scale mobile gaming tournaments and partnering with eSports teams as a core marketing strategy amid growing influence of mobile gaming on the Indian youth, industry watchers said. India has almost 450 million mobile gamers, which is expected to reach 720 million by 2028, according to Krafton India, the company behind popular eSports title Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI). The surge in mobile gaming is fuelled by the rapid growth of affordable smartphones and cheap data packages, creating a thriving ecosystem. Now, smartphone brands are tapping into that segment to grow their June, OnePlus announced a partnership with top-tier eSports teams God's Reign, K9, and Cincinnati Kids. The partnership extends to deep product integration, with players providing real-time feedback to shape current and future OnePlus iQOO and Infinix have also entered into similar partnerships where the feedback loop from gamers are allowing them to market their devices as ones built by gamers for gamers, experts said. "With gaming being a top indicator of smartphone performance, our collaboration will showcase the raw power and capabilities of our devices," Nipun Marya, chief executive of iQOO, told ET. "By supporting India's eSports teams, we're not only fuelling their passion but also demonstrating our commitment to delivering hardcore performance that every Gen Z demands."Many devices of these brands support higher frame-rates in online games, helping players to gain higher accuracy and improve the overall experience."It's a great way to showcase the performance of the devices," said Upasana Joshi, research manager at market tracker IDC India. "If the top eSports players are using their products, it becomes a good testament for the rest of the market about its reliability, especially when it comes to gaming, which is a high-performance use-case that pushes devices to their limits." The strategy is particularly relevant when the overall market is down for smartphones, she said. Sliding shipments Smartphone shipments fell 5.5% on-year in the March quarter, marking a slow start to the year with 32 million units shipped, according to IDC. Smartphone brands and telecom operators are also sponsoring major eSports tournaments in India, where their devices are used in the are also hosting eSports tournaments in smaller towns and colleges to identify grassroots talent, helping build the ecosystem. "Nearly every device now comes with some dedicated features targeted at mobile gamers, as competition has increased in this segment," she Jain, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research said the development, while not new, has gained prominence as mobile gaming evolved from being a niche use-case to a mainstream juggernaut that has grown by leaps and bounds in India. Telcos take note too The mobile gaming segment has also attracted the attention of telecom operators, who have launched dedicated prepaid plans aimed at mobile gamers that offer higher data limits and in-game instance, Reliance Jio has plans starting as low as ₹48 for a 3-day pack with 10 MB of data offering access to its cloud gaming app that hosts hundreds of games.

India backs Cyprus in its fight against Turkiye

In the background is the Kyrenia mountain range, painted with the flags of Turkiye and the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. NEW DELHI: With Israel and Iran teetering on the brink of a full-blown war, PM Narendra Modi on Monday said resolving issues through dialogue and restoring stability was the cry of humanity. Speaking alongside Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia, Modi reiterated his message that this isn't the era of war. Modi's visit to Cyprus - the first by an Indian PM in 23 years - saw the two sides discussing efforts to scale up cooperation in defence, security and connectivity with focus on IMEEC, with the PM strongly backing sovereignty and territorial integrity of the eastern Mediterranean country that is not recognised by Turkiye, a Pakistan ally. "We both have expressed concern about the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Europe. Their negative impact is not limited to that region alone. We both believe that this is not the era of war," Modi said after his talks with the Cypriot president. Modi thanked Cyprus for its continued support to India's fight against cross-border terrorism and announced a new mechanism for real-time information exchange to counter terrorism, drug and arms smuggling. The president reiterated Cyprus's strong condemnation of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, backing India's sovereignty and territorial integrity. In a show of solidarity with Cyprus, Modi visited the Green Line - a UN-controlled buffer zone that separates Northern Cyprus, an area occupied by Turkish forces in 1974, from the Republic of Cyprus - along with Christodoulides. This is significant in the context of Turkiye's continued support to Pakistan that saw Ankara helping Islamabad militarily during the recent India-Pakistan conflict. Turkish President Recep Erdogan himself later said Turkiye would continue to stand by Pakistan, though "good times and bad". Modi also reiterated India's traditional support for Cyprus's unity and for a peaceful resolution of the Cyprus Question based on UN Security Council resolutions and international law. Several of these resolutions call for the withdrawal of Turkish forces from the island of Cyprus. "India reiterated its unwavering and consistent support for the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of the Republic of Cyprus. In this regard, both sides emphasised the need to avoid unilateral actions as essential for creating a conducive environment for the resumption of meaningful negotiations," said a joint statement. Modi said the two sides would prepare a roadmap to give a strategic direction to the partnership for the next five years. On the issue of terrorism, both sides reiterated in a joint statement their zero-tolerance approach to terrorism, rejecting any justification for such acts, under any circumstances. "They emphasised that those responsible for the attacks should be held accountable," said the statement, while condemning the Pahalgam attack.
